Capolavoro assoluto. Beethoven parla dell'uomo, dell'umano attraverso il sacro. Sacro per lui è il sentirsi umani, uomini fratelli. E sacre sono le emozioni umane.

I performed it with the school choir in 1966 - a grammar school in a provincial town in Wales, but we performed a major choral work each year and this laid the foundations for my love of choral music. This is still one of my favourite Mass settings.

Paul Plishka, bass & Janet Baker, alto.

This was the first choral piece I sang, with my university's choir. That was about 50 years ago. We sang the 1st, 2nd and 5th movements (Kyrie, Gloria, Agnus Dei). I would rather have sung secular pieces, though I found this to be beautiful music.

It's pretty cool, you can almost see bits of Wagner in both this and the Missa Solemnis. But then some tacky Mozartian passages interrupt the "scenery" and you're reminded this is a half century too early for Das Ring. Beethoven truly was something.

Always the same story in catholic masses. The music is much too strong in the Kyrie and in the Agnus Dei. These sections of the Mass require a feeble and humble music which expresses and underlines the sinners' prayer for mercy and forgiving, Mozart and Haydn did evenworse. They composed Kyrie and Agnus Dei with drums and trumpets. The music has to follow the meaning of the text, and in most catholic masses this demand is not fulfilled.

That's only half the truth. “Kyrie eleison” was a common cry of veneration and exaltation toward any sovereign. The supplication wasn't in the foreground, but the glorification of the Lord as the one from whom we may expect grace.
And as to the Agnus Dei, I would name two aspects: the passion of Christ and the desperation of the prayer. Both aspects can be shown in a somber lighting or in a dramatic one.
