For my money, The Catherine Wheel are right up their with the band Failure for the most underrated bands of the 1990's. Both "Chrome" and "Fantastic Planet" are in my top 10 records of all time.
I share your enthusiasm for Catherine Wheel. Their lush, otherworldly guitar textures are the best. I'm not crazy about the label "shoegaze," but they are the best of the genre as far as I'm concerned.
Holy sh@# I am getting choked up just playing 10 seconds of it in my imagination. I had the luck to commute for 7 years in my car playing almost exclusively CW CDs and singing every phrase at the top of my lungs.
"Powerful metal but graceful and beautiful"- - perfect succinct description of music created by this amazing unique band. I had no idea Catherine Wheel had released so much material on vinyl. I was fortunate enough to have attended two of their live concert performances back in the 90's when they played in San Francisco, and even then I recognized that I was witness to something extraordinary. Since then I have always been frustrated that the band never released a proper live album or DVD, although I did manage to find a limited edition UK version of "Wishville" on CD that included a bonus disc with live material. I still keep my fingers crossed that the band will have a reunion someday.
I would say the changes in the record industry post Napster caused many great bands like CW to close up shop. Catherine Wheel was produced by Gil Norton who also produced the Pixies albums. Gil Norton only works with greatness. I will also note that CW also covered Spirit of Radio by Rush on one of their B-sides
It's really cool to see a whole vid dedicated to Catherine Wheel. You are right about being vastly underrated in the wake of bands like Radiohead. The same goes to their placement in the Shoegaze scene. I'm not sure if I agree with how they were lumped in with all of that. I love the uniformity of the 12 inches. Really cool stuff.

Count me as grateful for this delightful video. I am old enough to have used, handled, and owned LPs. Colored vinyl (red, yellow, whatever) is just beautiful. I am not embarrassed to admit that when I first got into this band (upon the release of "Chrome"), I actually sent them a letter because yes, I was that awestruck. Futter actually wrote back! I still have the letter, in cursive writing similar to my parents' (who were raised in Europe). I do agree with the you all - this band was very talented, and created music that moves me way more than Radiohead ever could (no offense to them). And dereckvon, you said it well about their music. To me, it was a bridging of the coarseness of distorted guitar sounds of the 1990s (which I love, don't get me wrong!) and the melodies of visual art coming alive. And indeed, I second Aden Wallace's comment below - a reunion tour is in order....think about it: Morrissey still kills, the Pixies had a practically sold out tour a few years ago. It can be done. Get the beautiful Catherine Wheel and the Chameleons UK on tour and nothing would stop me from seeing a show or two.
Catherine wheel is something special indeed, mate :) Your collection is mind blowing! Their albums are very deeply emotional journeys for me and I am still rocking my Catherine Wheel collection as often as possible in 2017 - I cannot get enough of Robs voice and their Uber-thick, yet unapologetically melodic guitar tones. I even recorded my own cover version of “pain” back in the late 90’s - This boy’s a satellite:) :) Thank you very much for sharing, you have made my day Sir! :) :)
Your enthusiasm for Catherine Wheel is a welcome breeze and I envy you your wonderful collection! I agree that they are one of the most criminally underrated bands of the 1990s and I hold out hope that one day they will re-form and have at it again.
Wow! What a nice homage to one of my favorite bands. I was with them from the beginning. Saw them in a bar in Cincinnati in 199? I forget. They sound great live. Thanks for presenting this for everyone who is interested.

And just a friendly reminder: "Black Metallic" was their first foray into the world of "120 Minutes", though my exposure to it came with "120 Minutes: Europe", as I was living in Scotland at the time. Regardless, that was my initial exposure to them, and I've never been the same since...
I saw them support SP on the Gish tour; early 90s and was immediately sold. Over the years I saw them several times live; always in small clubs. Indeed very weird that they never achieved big success. So many amazing rocksongs.
In a 2007 interview, Rob Dickinson said that members of Death Cab for Cutie and Interpol told him that without this album ( Chrome), their bands "wouldn't exist." I think I need to get this album. Thanks for the cogent analysis and overview. Very enjoyable and helpful video.
Watching this brought tears to my eyes, I have most of those records. Catherine Wheel were lumped in with the whole Shoegaze scene in the UK. Everyone of those bands where completely different. Have you checked out Levitation?
Just catching these posts now. Nice to see a lot of Catherine Wheel fans. As someone who used to gaze at his shoes while dancing to this stuff at clubs, the label suits me just fine. ;)

I first heard them on the radio in the United States on a Canadian radio station out of Toronto. (CFNY) In 1990 while on my way to highschool. Black metallic. It blew my mind. Immediately I began searching for their music. Luckily, I got to see them live in Barrie Ontario in 2001. Great collection you have man!!!👍👏👏👏.

I have all the CW albums you show in your collection! Had the good fortune to see them live twice and just blew me away both times. saw Catherine wheel first time at reading 1991 in the mean fiddler tent! then saw them supporting slowdive later that year. then saw them nest year at reading, love your blog here....I too own all the early 12" singles and first two albums. inc wide club records shes my friend etc. I kinda lost it with them after chrome. an amazing band and am glad I saw them....first time I saw them was their tv debut performing shes my friend on a programme called snub tv......carry on the good work!
JEALOUS. One of my favorite things about the Wheel is their guitar sound, especially on the first couple of albums. Their distorted tones are so rich and saturated, I dunno how they manage to make loud high gain sound so warm and comforting, lolol. Whenever the chorus kicks in on Crank or Black Metallic, I get that chill inducing adrenaline rush. The guitars just come in soaring. I liked the videos as well, kind of surreal and dreamy not unlike the music. Great upload here, obviously!

Hi Dereck, I believe that the cover of 'Chrome' was used on the cover of the Eye Of The Storm book. That was the book by Storm Thorgerson who took the cover shot for 'Chrome' and many other great albums. It is actually his work and Hipgnosis, the incredible company that designed Pink Floyd {like you stated} and one of my favorite album covers ever "Led Zeppelin's 'Presence' among hundreds more. Holy crap! My jaw dropped when you picked up Ferment in vinyl format. I had no idea it was issued on vinyl. That was part of the soundtrack to my life back in 1992. Anytime I hear it, I think about being at the University of Maryland.

Still regretting the day I didn't buy that copy of ferment on my '94 roadtrip to Salt Lake City...oddly that's the only time I've ever seen it on vinyl in the last 19 years. Always looking though. Dereck, I wonder what other groups you would recommend for people who agree on how amazing this band is, my all-time, absolute favorite band. Agree also OK Computer was my favorite from Radiohead. Another band from that era that nobody ever talks about is Tripping Daisy. My other favorites include Los Hombres Calientes, the Desperado soundtrack, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, and of course Michael Jackson's Bad album. Your collection behind you there is unbelievable.
Hey Dereck, I found this through Dave Hawes' Facebook posting. Fantastic collection and you are bang on with your analysis, although I think Catherine Wheel is better than Radiohead. Too bad they just never got that push. I especially agree with Storm's comments that Catherine Wheel was as significant in their era as Pink Floyd, which is my favourite band. Easily in my top 3 bands for the 90s with The Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead. Catherine Wheel was an incredible band. Adam and Eve was a virtually unknown album here in America, and a classic. Wishville has grown very special to me more with all the years in between. It's a shame more people don't know them. My favs on Wishville are "Creme Caramel" "What We Want to Believe In" "Gasoline" and "Ballad of a Running Man"
What's absolutely mental is that Rob Dickinson now runs Singer auto and builds reimagined Porsches. You hear these comparisons to Radiohead and Pink Floyd and then see this guy on Jay Leno's garage talking about his cars, everyone oblivious to how he was once the leader of one of the world's best bands.
Amazing. My college roomie who introduced me to the band via "Chrome" eventually produced a video doc about Rob Dickinson's car business. He was once the leader of one of the world's best bands.

I was lucky enough to see Catherine Wheel twice. First around Adam and Eve, second on Wishville. I hear your comment about CW being the Pink Floyd of their time. I feel the same way. Stellar band. Important band.
Whoa, blast from the past. I only remember them from "Black Metallic" and then some video where they were in an elevator. Both were played frequently on MTV's Alternative Nation & 120 Minutes but then it seemed like they disappeared.
So jealous. Such a great band. It's almost better that they never broke for the general public...not for the band or Dickinson, but for music purity. Thanks for posting this!

The only Catherine Wheel record I've managed to find is a 7" of show me Mary. It came with a poster of the Chrome art work which was pretty cool but I'd really love to get their LPs.

Catherine Wheel made some serious seriously amazing music. You are right in your synopsis & I agree, they should've & could've been just as big as their peers.

Holy crap! My jaw dropped when you picked up Ferment in vinyl format. I had no idea it was issued on vinyl. That was part of the soundtrack to my life back in 1992. Anytime I hear it, I think about being at the University of Maryland.

Still regretting the day I didn't buy that copy of ferment on my '94 roadtrip to Salt Lake City...oddly that's the only time I've ever seen it on vinyl in the last 19 years. Always looking though. So nice to see you've got one! Maybe someday. BTW - I'd love to see a copy of Bel Canto's Shimmering Warm and Bright...maybe you've got one...you should post it. Thanks again :)

Dereck, I wonder what other groups you would recommend for people who agree on how amazing this band is, my all-time, absolute favorite band. Agree also OK Computer was my favorite from Radiohead. Another band from that era that nobody ever talks about is Tripping Daisy. My other favorites include Los Hombres Calientes, the Desperado soundtrack, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, and of course Michael Jackson's Bad album. Your collection behind you there is unbelievable.

Hey Dereck, I found this through Dave Hawes' Facebook posting. Fantastic collection and you are bang on with your analysis, although I think Catherine Wheel is better than Radiohead. Too bad they just never got that push.
I especially agree with Storm's comments that Catherine Wheel was as significant in their era as Pink Floyd, which is my favourite band. I really wish these guys get their credit some day. Thanks for sharing. Cheers
Easily in my top 3 bands for the 90s with The Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead. Catherine Wheel was an incredible band. Adam and Eve was a virtually unknown album here in America, and a classic. Wishville has grown very special to me more with all the years in between. It's a shame more people don't know them. My favs on Wishville are "Creme Caramel" "What We Want to Believe In" "Gasoline" and "Ballad of a Running Man"

What's absolutely mental is that Rob Dickinson now runs Singer auto and builds reimagined Porsches. You hear these comparisons to Radiohead and Pink Floyd and then see this guy on Jay Leno's garage talking about his cars, everyone oblivious to how he was once the leader of one of the world's best bands.
Amazing. My college roomie who introduced me to the band via "Chrome" eventually produced a video doc about Rob Dickinson's car business. He was once the leader of one of the world's best bands.
I have a white CW t-shirt with the Carrie film still at the 4:04 mark, evidently from the early '90s

Wishville has some great tracks, such as Mad Dog (which should have been the lead single, IMO), and Ballad of a Running Man
I was lucky enough to see Catherine Wheel twice. First around Adam and Eve, second on Wishville. I hear your comment about CW being the Pink Floyd of their time. I feel the same way. Stellar band. Important band.

Whoa, blast from the past. I only remember them from "Black Metallic" and then some video where they were in an elevator. Both were played frequently on MTV's Alternative Nation & 120 Minutes but then it seemed like they disappeared.

The only Catherine Wheel record I've managed to find is a 7" of show me Mary. It came with a poster of the Chrome art work which was pretty cool but I'd really love to get their LPs.
