Pearl's Reference Series is the hi-end kit that completely changed Pearl's mass-produced drum kits! Knowledge from the production of countless Masterworks kits was used to construct a drum kit built on the experiences of drummers around the world.
As you know, the Masterworks series is designed by the buyer down to the last detail, where each drum in the set can be completely different. Over the years, this type of detailed shell construction provided a road map for optimizing the tone of each drum in a kit. This roadmap was used to produce the Reference series.
Drum manufacturers have long known that different types of wood create different sounds in drums. Thickness and bearing edge also affect the sound, and until the Reference series was put into production, the vast majority of series-produced drums in a set were produced in the same thickness. The Reference Series changed this by focusing on making every drum in the kit sound its best, regardless of how the others are made.
In the Reference series, a different number of layers of maple is used in all drums for its even, warm and well-balanced midtone. Birch layers are added to small timbres to increase volume and attack, while African mahogany is added to the larger timbres, floor timbres and bass drum to emphasize the low-end with lots of "bottom" and "punch". The thickness of each shell is also optimized, as well as the carrying edge.
The Reference series hardware consists of BRL lugs which provide optimal adjustment and mounting of the tuning screws due to the swivel function which places the tuning screw perfectly in relation to the lug. The MasterCast Die-Cast Hoop provides perfect pressure on the skin and makes tuning the drums very precise and easy. The bass drum's solid SP-300 legs with practical rubber and spikes can be turned without using a tuning key or other tools.

The set sold here is in a fantastically beautiful finish - Twilight Fade - lacquered with a transition from solid black to lighter transparent lacquer where the wood shines through the deep clear lacquer. To top it all off, the set comes with 18 carat gold-plated hardware. Simply beautiful!
The set was produced in 2012 and appears to be in very good condition. There are some signs of use in the exterior finish, but this is certainly a set in extremely good condition with no faults, damages or defects. The whole kit has been taken down for service, cleaned, polished, greased and reassembled with new skins all over.
Remo Emperor Clear headstock and Evans G1 Clear headstock on all frets. The bass drum has a new front skin, Remo Gloss Black with Crest logo, and a virtually new Evans Hydraulic black drum skin.
