I truly doubt there is any comedian on George Carlin's level. His ability to rattle of chains of information without having to think about it. His topics and the support he has for his topics is incredible. It is my feeling George Carlin is not just a comedic genius, but a genius all by himself.

    • @davidgee4260

Look at his early standup and I think you will see that like a great musician he never quit growing and learning by observing the absurdities we just accept in our devolving perception of reality. He did not improvise but rather constructed words in the way authors or poets create. Great comedians like Robin Williams could improvise like crazy and it was funny as hell but he never made me think about what he said the way Carlin could. He told us what we knew in our hearts but we're unable to articulate. His observation of truth in the manipulation of society by lies and deceit helped some of us wake up to truth in our own perceptions.

Agree to a certain extent. I wouldn't say he rattles off the information without having to think, I would say he has all his points well researched and hours put into how the sentences are arranged and the words ordered. But I think that's what makes him a genius. A lot of hard work on his behalf makes us laugh, as his comedy treads the line of philosophy making us question our beliefs and perceptions.

I think of him less as a comedian and more as a teacher giving lectures. He used comedy to make us pay attention and to think about the points he was making, to think about the absurdity of things we weren't even thinking about. He was funny, but more importantly he was an educator. RIP, George.

I'm an old fan of Carlin from way back (the 70s), I love how meaningful his work is to this day, to anyone who is willing to listen with an open mind, and then consider his words. You do. You are obviously a well-read, thoughtful lady; insightful and eloquent. Oh, stunningly beautiful, too, and your intellect clearly adds to that, as well.

I was fortunate enough to live next door to an advertising producer for Proctor & Gamble in the '70s, and as kids, he told us some things about his craft, and ALL advertising. One which sticks in my mind was an ad for Spick and Span cleanser where they used a double-headed mop to "prove" that their product cleans better than their competitor's. The lie in that ad was that one bucket was filled with ice water, and the other with scolding hot water. The trick was that they used filters on the camera lens so 'we' couldn't see the steam wafting out of the bucket containing boiling water.
I've made it a mission to raise awareness of advertising, especially with my sons (and their friends). I've trained them to dissect every single word in any commercial and to read between the lines for context because every advertisement is trying to pick their (OUR) pockets. My kids are now quite adept at picking apart the propaganda they see on television, and I'm proud of them! Perhaps the most offensive ad I love to decode is one for *gold clad* (likely a film no more than 1 molecule in thickness) coin proofs where they talk about the skyrocketing gold market and "to avoid disappointment and future regret, ACT NOW," etc... It's sickening, and reminds me of a truism - "nobody ever went broke underestimating the stupidity of the American people." (Mark Twain??)
Most important of all (IMO) is familiarity with the name Edward Bernays, nephew of Sigmund Freud, and 'father' of contemporary propaganda. He is THE one who discovered how to manipulate the masses. HE is the one who figured out that preying on people's primal instincts is the way to sell...ANYTHING. From cars to politicians to "food-products'' (insert our hero, George Carlin, here), he opened the door for American-style capitalism run amok. The more I've learned about Edward Bernays, the more squarely I point my finger at him for ALL of our society's ills. He was a dastardly man who, as I remember it, denounced his life's work on his deathbed - good riddance, but he left this world with the reprehensible ramifications of his greed.
Here's a little primer of what he did to us for anyone who's interested in the TRUTH of advertising....
    th-cam.com/video/qiKMmrG1ZKU/w-d-xo.html
And here's another VERY related topic to point your finger at Bernays for...

Reading the label of a tub of sweets we had in a tuck shop at work I was amused to read (in toal): "artificial flavouring, artificial colouring". The use of "no added ..." (usually for sugar) often means that the item is rich in 'natural sugars' such as fructose, etc., and seeing the amount of sugar in some things, especially some drinks, is scary! I tried a bottle (I think it was 500ml, but could have been 330ml) and I idly glanced at the ingredient data and was rather shocked to find this one small bottle of drink contained more than the recommended daily intake of sugar for an adult; it was about 1.2 times if I recall correctly. Thanks Mountain Dew! My first, and last, time of drinking the stuff.
I can't think of any UK comedians that have the same sort of approach as some of the US comics such as Carlin, Hicks, etc., but if I do think of one I'll let you know. The closest that come to mind are some of the 'new wave' of many years ago such as Alexei Sayle and Ben Elton who were left-wing comedians who castigated Margaret Thatcher (it being that era).

If you look into the tragic past of Robin Williams you understand where the humour developed and his inner demons. Sad ancient tales of abused/neglected child used by a depressed mother to keep her spirits up and fight her depression. It was his role to keep her happy. That is so wrong and so backwards. The adult is responsible for themselves and the child. The child is not supposed to be burdened with adult duties and responsibilities. Pain turned to art is beautiful but pain is still the root.
He tried for so long to lead the life of making others laugh that he never was able to conquer those demons in his head. The voice one assumes of his inner mother that refused to let him be sad or a child in need of help. There is sad tragic truth behind the laughs. Far too many tales. I know history. War time Britain especially, the children were spared as much as possible the worst of the war. Even during the Blitz living underground efforts were made for things like birthdays, and Christmas. They don't have to know what is really happening in detail. Their childhood is important and the chance to grow into stable adults who can laugh and be silly, but can be serious and do the hard work of an adult world.
I cherish the laughter of Robin Williams and mourn the pain that took him from the world.

Speaking of ads & pharmaceutical companies, one of the first ads I saw with the mandatory side-effect disclaimer was for a diet pill (just keep that in mind). they spent 30 seconds talking about what the pill is for, and *5 minutes talking about the side-effects* (I kept looking at the clock waiting for the ad to end, so I noticed how long it was). And one of the side effects was death. for a diet pill!! Losing weight is not worth killing yourself. When Garfield said "Diet is die with a T at the end," I thought it was just a joke...

Reading recommendation isn't a book per se, but a related topic:
Bioavailability, RDI (recommended dosage intake) and RDA (recommended dosage allowed).
Back in college I was an intern on a project collaboration between the statistics and nutrition department and got to learn a bit about those.
RDIs serve as a guideline for how much of each nutrient you should get to stay healthy and mostly vary with weight and caloric budget.
RDAs are more about how far can you go before you begin to risk poisoning or long term damage to your organs from excessive consumption.
It hit me hard when I realized Vitamin C has an RDA of 2000mg/day and vitamin tablets came in 500mg with 8 hour intervals.
Any person taking one more just because they can risked kidney damage in the long run if it was a habit.
Think of Linus Pauling being paid to say vitamins could never harm you and taking one every time a camera was pointed at him... then check his medical issues at your favorite source =(
The project itself was about anaemia and finding out fortified (supplemented) food could cause iron poisoning was shocking as well.
Because nutrients can be absorbed in different stages of digestion through different chemical reactions, they can compete for available resources.
That's where bioavailability comes in it is knowing what combinations can ensure or undermine the absorption of a nutrient of interest.
And because iron would dispute absorption sites with a couple quite common nutrients at every stage and get boosts from others, it was always a concern that you could flip from not enough to way too much absorption without changin the iron dosage itself.

      @NoProtocol  ปีที่แล้ว +3

So much I didn’t know here! Had to quickly look into Linus Pauling, as I wasn’t familiar with him before. I’ll have to keep RDI in mind while taking Zinc, which often makes me very nauseous. Thanks Daniel!!

I am always looking for new people to react to. I’m glad I found you. You are very bright, articulate, intelligent individual, and very beautiful young woman. Might I add as well in seeing that when I try to think of a so-called standup comedian, that could come anywhere close to George carlin one name comes to mind I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of him, but if not try looking up a comedian named Gallagher he’s about the closest. It comes to George carlin, but nobody can equal George carlin.

So, I wouldn't put him on nearly the same level, but when it comes to impact YET, but there are a lot of things from Bo Burnham that are the same intelligence level, but it's much more self reflective than observational. "From God's Perspective", "New Math", "Welcome to the Internet"...I'd take a look at him if you've never seen him. OR.....do some Epic Rap Battles of History. I'd love to see you react to Alexander the Great vs Ivan the Terrible or George Carlin vs Richard Pryor.

I'm doing a plant-based diet right now, and I stick to sources that are explicitly plant-based. There are times when I see these "vegan" options that have so many bad stats (fats, sodium, carbs, etc.) that I shouldn't be intaking, so I understand what you're saying when you say "things are gluten free" aren't necessarily healthy. I 100% agree. Just because something is vegan or gluten free, or even sugar free, doesn't mean it's a healthy alternative. We either need to educate ourseleves on dietary requirements/needs for our personal healthy regimen, or we need to come up with a universal rating system so we know which foods we can safely digest based on our own requirements. Imageine if we had a color based system where we could KNOW that what we were consuming was what our individual requirements demanded, to be healthy. What a world we would live in. I am a teal person, I can handle these things and my body won't kill me more quickly than if I go red. lol

When I shop for groceries I don't even look what's on the label, I look at the price, cheaper the better then I throw it in a pot turn on the stove and when I smell it rich in the air, that means it done and then I let sit a minute or two, then eat it right out the pot or pan instead of dirtying up dishes 😂😂

About George's last point, the one about the use of the word 'natural' there's a substance that was once used as a natural vanilla flavor. It's obsolete now because people can make vanillin in a lab, vanillin being the primary flavor component of vanilla extract, though it lacks the supporting compounds that affect the flavor of actual vanilla extract a little, so to someone with a discerning sense of taste, it would taste a little off. Still a lot cheaper than both real vanilla and the substance I'm talking about. Now, tangent aside, the ingredient 'natural vanilla flavor' that used to be on some food labels before the use of the ingredient was discontinued was an oil secreted by a scent gland on the backside of beavers, specifically the gland that would provide the scent for the fluid the beavers spray to mark their territory.
The coloring agent Red 40 is a natural color. It's also known as Carmine. it has its origin in Native American war paint. It's made by crushing a specific species of beetle into a paste. The paste is a vibrant red color, about the hue of fresh red paint. As an aside, it's also almost as hard to get out of clothing as blood.
As for George's comment about chemical waste being natural, he's absolutely right. Chemical waste is completely natural. It's the natural byproducts of the chemical reactions humans produce in controlled settings to create so-called 'artificial' products. Anything manmade could theoretically occur in nature, if the conditions were right. Really all humans do to create 'artificial' things is force the conditions to be right. One of the conditions is to have the right components in place to interact. That's all controlled environments are, environments that force the conditions to be right for whatever outcome you want. The control is in omitting any unwanted conditions.
