    You're pretty much right about everything. George wasn't telling jokes this time around, he's had heart trouble most of his life. He'd gone thru 3-4 heart attacks by this point and you can tell by comparing him in this video to others that he wasn't doing too good here. This was his last HBO special and in my opinion I think he knew he didn't have much time left so he kept the joking to a minimum and just went out and said everything he felt he needed to say. Within a few months of the special airing he was gone. RIP my friend, we miss you George.
    Peace

      I 100 percent agree with u on this. He left it all out there as one last gift of knowledge he could give . One last warning that of course will be unheard. His later comedy routines weren't comedy shows. To me they were warnings to wake people up. Best comedian ever In my opinion. Made u laugh and think at the same time. So scary how right he was on everything. Especially when he said living in this world you have a ticket to the freak show. And if u live in America you have a front row seat. Rip Carlin your missed more than u will ever know

    I am a teacher, so I can tell you that what George says is completely accurate. And the major problem with education, not only in the US but in many places, is that the educational system, in general, is designed to kill creativity and imagination, which with a few exceptions, it really accomplishes. Real education is much simpler than everybody imagines, and at the very beginning, it consists only in letting children be children and discover the world around them by themselves, with teachers as facilitators. Education, in that sense, must teach children HOW to think, not WHAT to think. All that is taught in the twelve or so years that children spend in school could be taught in one year, when they're starting to decide what they want to pursuit as a profession, that's it! The rest is a waste of time and has the purpose of controlling and taming by killing critical thinking, nothing more.

    • @Nowhy
      @Nowhy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Just don't forget that true critical thinking abilities start to develop around age 12. However, a 6 year old child can understand any good (complete) explanation, as long as it doesn't go into metaphors and topics that require the ability to differentiate between different categories - critical thinking.

    • @mlaruex
      @mlaruex ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would say "jein" to that (yes and no). Schools are basicaly not designed to kill creativity and imagination. The first "function" of a school is to take custody of kids, so their parents can go to work. The second "function" of a school is selection (hand out certificates). Because of this, schools kill the joy about learning, and thus creativity and imagination. Also never forget, each kid is individual and you (the schools, the teacher) can not educate them individualy, its impossible. Some, long, time ago, there were more teachers and the classes were smaler and it worked to some degree, it was, and should be, more about how to think rather then what to think, but those times are long gone.

      @@hanginggardens5383 What you just described is the opposite of what today are called "standards". What you describes is precisely the way (or one of the ways) in which languages should be taught... experiencial learning. There is nothing more insipid that the "standards" that have been introduced as a goal in today's education system.

    • @nexuscross3233
      @nexuscross3233 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NowhyI strongly disagree with the notion that critical thinking starts at 12, it starts much sooner around 4-5 years of age, it depends on the parents and how stimulating the environment is.
      And I don't need any studies or statistics to prove it, I remember from my own experiences and memories from when I was of that age.
      Children in many ways are more profound and are capable of asking existential questions than most adults; if most adults do that then the entire world world would transform.

    • @Nowhy
      @Nowhy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nexuscross3233 we have a misunderstanding.. I mean essential critical thinking, not thinking about mechanical/logical stuff. A 6 year old child can understand a complex motor, when the explanation is good and/or the communication from a teacher or source is competent, but when it comes to metaphors and the metaphysical/symbolic, a certain change relating to puperty has to take place - before that, a child cannot essentially choose who it want to be for instance (no true personality). Most people nowadays are just like 12 year olds intellectually/emotionaly speaking, lacking personality and their own ethics that they choose (wanting to go back to childhood, without responsibility or guilt, depending on mom and dad, or if they believe in it as good, the state) - this choosing cannot be taught or the person wouldn't made free through their decisions...
      Sadly, many people are way to sensible for their own good - but hey, there is also humor in that (which again is developed very basic for most).

    Love your observation on education versus intelligence. I wasn't surprised when I saw a chart showing how over the last three decades the amount of money going to schools has gone up in proportion to how much grades/test scores have gone down. I watched my son and grand kids going through school and none of them were challenged in school. For two of them it was to easy and they got bored and stopped trying, then barely passed. I feel for the students in school now, low discipline, lower standards and the three basics are for the most part skipped over.

    Personally this was my problem back in school. I didn't learn the same as everybody else and thus I failed. I couldn't understand things we're learning as easily and as far as the state was concerned I was an idiot. And to be fair I am likely an idiot in some regards. But I learned what I wanted to learn and I can possibly use that information. The school system in my opinion is very broken. And it's not just on the learning, it's also on the interactive end as well.

      Schools don’t exist to raise smart and critical thinking people. Schools are designed to construct “good” citizens that are obedient to authority figures and big government.
      You “failed” because you weren’t following along to authority the way they wanted you to. If you can’t follow like the others, it’s more difficult to indoctrinate you to the same extent.

      The public school system wasn't designed for males. Males require a different style of education than females. I was a poor student even though I was extremely creative. When I changed how I learned, regardless of what the teachers told me, I improved. I stopped participating in discussions and doing homework. I learned proper note taking, did ALL my work in class, and practically napped or read novels for the rest of the class time. I stopped listening to the teachers speeches because most of it was either useless or was already in my notes. My scores went from D's and F's to mostly A's. I graduated with a 3.88 gpa.
      This method helped me graduate as salutarian in my Corrections Officer class for the Regional Jail system where I also earned college credits.
      Males require simplicity, practicality, efficiency, discipline, and clear goals. Public schools don't provide this.

    Carlin developed his voice in the post-Vietnam hippie era, where skepticism towards the deeds of the government was becoming a standard for many critical-thinking Americans. As he aged and the Internet was becoming more popular, pop culture exploded and became far more corporate.
    I explain this to make the point that much of the comedic aspect of George's later material is that basic critical thinking abilities had declined to the extent where people just regurgitate talking points and consume vain, pointless culture, just accepting everything at face value. The comedy is that he talks about things that should be common sense, but people began to prefer having their perspectives already articulated for them.
    He's not angry at people, he's disappointed that everything is taken at face value when it should be questioned. However, the skeptical voice tends to be silenced/obsfugated.

    7:04 yea imo rich people and politicians are by and large just as clueless as the rest of us, only real difference being that they saw a chance to play the system and took it. best education is being given motivation to learn. concrete vision of a better life is imo what drove early 20th century american immigrants to educate themselves and that's probably what's happening in India and China right now. but if you're born into that better life already then what? school's primary goal should be to provide that motivation to learn everything else is secondary.

    What's crazy is that we are still using the same teaching methods we were using in the 1950s. Rote learning is a perfect description. Forcing these kids to memorize and regurgitate (mostly) useless facts that they will quickly forget. The difference is that this method was not nearly as harmful back then. A boy could finish high school and immediately secure a job in a factory that would afford him the ability to not only support himself, but a stay at home wife and several children. That America does not exist anymore. It hasn't for decades. All those jobs were shipped overseas and replaced by trash like WalMart, fast food, etc, jobs", wage slavery.
    What we should be teaching in schools are things like money management (an obscene number of Americans are financially illiterate and have no financial self control) and critical thinking skills- logic, reason, how to construct a syllogism, or a sound, valid argument, how to spot fallacies, how to evaluate truth claims and what constitutes a reasonable standard of evidence.The Socratic teaching method should be introduced in all high schools. I didn't truly learn critical thought until I hit college. Which is sad and ridiculous.

Unfortunately, most of the classes were just memorizing. No real thought requires, if you can read and write and memorize, you can pass just fine, and even as a teen I was starting to see the cracks in this society and school was what bothered me the most back then. I actually like learning, and most of the classes were just so damn boring. I wondered why adults thought that these "slacker" kids and failing students would take an interest when I could barely do so. I could tell right away these kids weren't stupid, but a lot of the teachers treated them that way. From what I hear, not much has changed. (I was in high school during mid 2000s)

    I agree with you about the school system. I am from switzerland and they are very proud of the educational opportunities here. But no learning methods are taught in schools. Remembering something for a test is not real learning. I myself only found access to knowledge after my school days through coaching seminars, which made brain research and psychology the basis for learning methods.

    From an old dude who grew up with Carlin, nice to see that he is still watched and respected. The guy was a mensch. And I think bill burr in a much more angry style has the same type of introspective comedy.
    Your personalty and smile are very engaging. Not sure why you don't have alot more subs.

    Good observations! Critical thinking is a precious commodity today. The ability to parse out what a person is saying is lost and now turns into group think. There are many people who are passionately sincere, but sincerely wrong. Both sides cannot be right. Seek the truth.

    I enjoy your critical thinking. I knew a man who had a photographic memory, I said that must have been handy at school, he said
    "You'd think, but apparently knowing something and understanding something are two different things."

    It took me till my early 20s to break away from just the memory and repetition since that's all I needed since HS. To truly understand the process of whatever you are studying and not just some vocabulary that fills in a sentence of definition.

    Yeah when I joined the military as an enlisted and started interacting with officers, I learned that a higher education does not always equate to applicable smarts. And most geopolitical wars are always started by the educated, so much for learning history.

    I always enjoy watching you. You're very intelligent and articulate. As a former teacher, I can honestly say that I never did it for the income...I did it for the outcome. Einstein never spoke a word until he was 4 or 5 years old. People thought he was slow. As they say, never judge a book by its' cover. Keep up the good work and always keep an open mind but not so open that your brains fall out!

    A good addition to this topic and video would be David Foster Wallace's "This is Water" commencement speech. He stresses the importance of critical thinking, understanding, and thinking for yourself, and conversely, the dangers of certainty and the standardization of education. Great channel by the way.

    I always found it hard to classify Carlin as a comedian. He is funny alright but his topics aren't just about laughter, he deals with serious issues quite seriously with a sprinkle of humour here and there. The comedy is incidental in his presentations. He is not telling jokes, he is conscientising his audience.

    Thank you actually proving links to these valuable resources. A lot of videos mention the problems without providing actual solutions. That is of course also important but your video provides so much more. I believe MIT has the philosophy that knowledge and edication has to be available for everyone. So most of their courses are free... I would highly recommend them as well.

    Through our union, teachers, like most folks with power sometimes abuse it when the opportunity arises. Yes, we teachers in some cases, certainly not all, are at fault. Academia in general has given itself too much credit, and because promoting education is their business, they too abuse their power. As a member of the teacher's union, I see the benefits that we deserve and the abuse. Parents ultimately must take responsibility for their children's education both politically and personally.

    When I was in sixth grade, in the 1960s, there was a teacher who taught me two of the, I feel, most important lessons in life. Figures don't lie but liars figure and not believe everything I read or see on TV. I was not the best academic student and maybe I'm naturally suspicious, but I think she was instrumental in my becoming an analytical critical thinker. I have the impression that in those days they spent more time teaching us how instead of what to think.

    Yeah!, There's a difference between having information, and practical application. I agree that basic life skills should be the focus of education. While a well rounded education is important, the basics gives the individual the means to acquire one on their own. . I'm dyslectic, didn't learn to read until I was in the seventh grade. Now you might ask how I made it all the way to the seventh grade. I listened in class, I didn't do my homework, and was past on with marginal grades. Then I lucked out. I was sent to a remedial reading class. The teacher was a women PE teacher. She recognized my problem. She told me that the written English language didn't make any sense. That's why it had all those rules, and exceptions to the rules. And that I was tying to place common sense onto something that didn't have any. I read my first paper back book that year, cover to cover. The Planet of the double suns. Still got a copy. I read more, and more, and graduated with a B average. I still had to study a lot harder, and longer then most, but I'm not stupid, just different

    Born in 65. Education has gone from bad to worse. I've seen tons of courses and programs cut out of my schools. I've seen the grading scale lowered years after I left high school. I've read about GRE scores dropping over the, years. Kids are just pushed through. Really sad.

    I like everything about this lady, especially the fact that she doesn't act as her own shill by telling her viewers to "like, subscribe and ring the notification bell" before her video even starts. In most other TH-cam videos one sees this, but I can't understand why anyone would "like" or "subscribe" to anything they haven't even watched yet. By the way, I have watched many of her videos and have always given her the "thumbs up" that she has never asked for.
