Yeah, I find it crazy that Tony Slomanm a British critic, didn't find it authentic due to it have a British actor in Bill Travers and a Swedish actress in Bibi Andersson despite the west have many European immigrants (and the US army having many who joined as a way of gaining citizenship or to show loyalty to their new home). As a whole it is a pretty realistic snapshot of the Indian Wars of the Southwest with authentic locations and real settings (Fort Concho). It also clearly sides with the plight of the Apache without making these fierce warriors hippies.
So glad I found this soundtrack again. This music had a bittersweet and bewitching quality to it when I first heard it as a child in the 60's and mesmerized me. After listening to it again last night as well as today, its theme's recurrent and haunting melody line with its sense of hope conjured all the scenes once again despite departures amidst the strife of the calvary and Apache battles. This was a Western so layered with lessons of unexpected humanity and prejudice that the music had to be sophisticated enough to tell the entire story. In fact, I can see each scene in my mind from hearing it once again. Thank you, Neal Hefti. I adore "Chato's Surrender" more than I can put into words.

everyone has a moment of genius in their life this was Neal Heft's. If he never wrote another note of music in his life it would not matter because this score is beyond amazing, it drills into your soul and grabs you until the last note. you would think that it would diminish with repeating and time, but it hasn't it's got stronger and even more emotive . The film was great and the casting spot on and Dennis weaver lost his limp
59 years laters it still bringns me emmotions like im part of the movie like part of scene really who he created every part of the song for the right moment just awesome i never forget this movie hes a genius writer i felt so crazy about it just because the sounds i was 7 years and i star play couwboys with friends with the sounds in my mind thanks this man for this remarkable job .
