I remember seeing this movie when was a Kid. Idk how often i saw it back then, but i haven't seen it for almost 30 years. This was when movies where fun to watch.
When I listen to this soundtrack tears roll down my cheeks and goose bumps appear on my skin. A most beautiful melody which takes one back to those glorious days when talent was abundant in music and films.
I just listened to it and the tears did start flowing. I thought of seeing this movie as a child in a huge theater and with this music blaring. So nostalgic and made me think of a happier time.
When you think how prolific and diverse Bernstein was over his career, it's extremely impressive. From a western like the Comancheros to his orchestral work on the Heavy Metal soundtrack or films like Ghostbusters. One thing they all have in common, is that Bernstein's contributions provide the emotional and atmospherical impact that is, for all of them, definitive.
Two of the Dukes children had roles in this movie. Patrick and the little girl is his daughter Aissa. I love the scene where he holds her and she is playing with his scarf and looking so comfortable in his arms. No wonder, how sweet to be playing on the set with her father! I fell in love with Stuart Whitman in this movie. He was so handsome and dashing. He went on to star in Cimarron Strip which to this day is one of the best Western TV shows.
Elmer was the master - reinventing the style several times over - and each time a treat. But don't hesitate to checkout his comrades also from the East who also helped to define the West: Jerome Moross with his iconic theme (and score) for 'The Big Country' (and the T.V. series 'wagon Train'), John Williams lovely 'The Rare Breed', and Jerry Goldsmith, whose string of pastiche Western scores is the mid to late 60s is highlighted most notably by 'Hour of the Gun' and 'Rio Lobo'.
Great score and movie! While hanging by their wrists, Whitman says to Wayne: "You should think of a new plan Jake, this one didn't work out so well." Wayne responds, "the hell it didn't, we found the hideout didn't we?" Whitman says, "Yeah, I wonder if they know how much trouble they're in."

A rousing personal favourite from the Bernstein array of fine western film scores, even preferred to the more famous music from "Thr Magnificent Seven".
A wonderful example of one of the all-time great, but forgotten western scores. Another is Elmer Bernstein's THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER, Jerry Goldsmith's RIO CONCHOS, Bruce Broughton's SILVERADO and Trevor Jones' LAST OF THE MOHICANS.
Elmer also did the music for The Shootist, Big Jake, and True Grit. Great Music! In the Commancheros, Melinda, the blond woman with her daughter, played Joan O'Brien, had a theme called Melinda's Theme. I am just an emotional sap when that is played. It is a warm piece of music.
True. And yet, Bernstein's range was quite remarkable - from his breakthrough score for Cecil B. DeMille's "The Ten Commandments" (1956) and his jazzy score for Otto Preminger's "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1956), to his wistful and nostalgic Coplandesque score for Robert Mulligan's "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962) and his fun score (with some truly moving cues) for Ida Lupino's "The Trouble with Angels" (1966).
Stuart Whitman more than held his own co starring with the Duke in this great western. Whitman went on from this to star in Cimarron Strip. It lasted only one season but is still regarded as one of the finest one hour western series made. High quality for the time.
