  • Showing everyone an alternate idea for tool storage. I use these file cabinets in my office area (in the video) and in my garage at home.
    If you find them on Facebook Marketplace, a Yard Sale, or anywhere used.... they are a great deal!
    Let me know what you think and thanks for watching.

    I'm just a homeowner. We recently moved and unfortunately I lost valuable shop and storage area so every little square inch really count's now.
    I've looked at a lot of other file cabinet videos and the way you have utilized the space in yours is by far the best I've seen. Thank you for the video. Be blessed! 🙏👍

    I have a large filing cabinet. It’s old, I don’t use it for anything, and it takes up a lot of room. After watching your video I’m going to move it out to my woodworking shop and set it up for tools. My wife also saw this video and she wanted the cabinet to use as a linen closet. We did a rock, paper, scissors battle for the cabinet. I won! Guess I’ll be looking on Facebook for another one for her. Thanks for the great ideas.

    I buy them at our county surplus yard for $25. Have found many at estate sales and auctions for $2.50 to $10.00. Absolutely great for power tools, extension cords, battery chargers, bottle jacks, jack stands, levels, etc. The bin idea is brilliant.

    That is a real nice setup! At work (aircraft maintenance) I have traditional boxes and a cart. At home also but I recently found an old card catolog cabinet and and a 2 drawer standard file cabinet. They were cheap and very well made. As you said, the size of the drawers makes them invaluable for oddly sized stuff, limited only by your imagination. The move to "paperless" archives makes these easier to find than ever before.

    • @MORGANSMaintenance
      @MORGANSMaintenance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've actually been looking at an old library card catalog as well. I've been thinking about making it a fastener bin.
      It is a little ways away from me. Ive just been deciding if it's worth the drive to get it.
      Once I figured out the two layers I was sold on using th these. I was going to build plywood boxes with lips but found the totes that worked.
      For the price, I can't make them better or cheaper.
      Thanks for the comment!

    I like your setup. I am using file cabinets as storage and tool boxes. I put casters on all of the cabinets in case I drop something and it’s easy to find and they’re easy to move so cleanup is so much easier. Also if I want to reconfigure the shop footprint, I’ve done this a few times, it’s easy to roll the cabinets to it’s new location.

    Great video, I have some larger size file cabinets that the doors flip up to expose the shelves. They work awesome.
    Probably mentioned this before but I own restaurants and do 95% of my own maintenance as part of my job in addition to the 30,000 foot management. I could easily hire it out but I absolutely love it! There’s so much variety and something is always breaking. I’m expanding my portable M12 line so much I broke down and bought a Hart stack system (don’t laugh) just to see if I like that style of organization. It’s not bad but fairly flimsy. For $89 plus another $25 in 2 small organizers it’s a small investment. Looked at the packout but think it’s a bit overkill for me.

    • @MORGANSMaintenance
      @MORGANSMaintenance  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have some of those in the “shared” storage space outside my office. Those work good for power tool storage.
      If you get these at the right price you can’t build anything better… especially with the cost of materials these days.

    My office was raffling office/lab furniture. Ended up winning a handful of mostly 36" 3 drawer but a few other sizes. Also won 3 really nice test benches made of solid paneled maple that are 2x72x36. they've got a top shelf that goes on the back of the top surface also made of maple with really nice LED lights and those long strip outlet bars.

    • @MORGANSMaintenance

      They are from Lowes. I put a link in the description for you.
      My file cabinets are adjustable for different paper/folder sizes. Not all of them have that but most do. I was going to build plywood boxes with lips but those fit perfectly and worked for me. They also sell a taller one with the same footprint that fits in my drawers. That is what I have in my drawer with Paint Supplies in the video. I use that for bigger items just to separate them.

      @@MORGANSMaintenance I'm surprised by both the apparent quality (lifetime guarantee) and Hefty name brand. At $12.98 each I'd have more Yankee dollars invested in these totes than the file cabinets cost so I searched for other retailers. The good news is that Target lists what appear to be the same item for $7.49 each. The bad news is that they don't have any. Nevertheless, there must be dimensionally suitable trays in the dollar store that would work for lightweight items. Alternatively, permanent, stacking plywood trays could be built by smart fellas like us, right?

    • @MORGANSMaintenance
      @MORGANSMaintenance  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markkoons7488 I already had a bunch of those totes and I think I paid $5 for them. I used to use them in drawers I built for my truck before I bought the Decked system.
      Before I realized those totes worked I was going to just build simple plywood boxes out of cut offs. Then just nail a small strip on the outside edge of the box to make a lip to run on the file supports. (Hope that makes sense)
      You could just make them stack on one another too if the lip isn’t an option in your cabinet.

      @@MORGANSMaintenance Yes, it does make sense. In typical legal size file cabinets plywood boxes or trays will work fine. I say that because I have five different brands and configurations of file cabinets storing stuff in my shop and your approach to increasing their utility will work in every one.
