  • For this activity, you will create and develop an asymmetrical composition that utilises design elements such as line, shape, texture and colour in the style of Harold Hollingsworth. This is also part of a 10 part video playlist exploring different abstract painting techniques.

I have really enjoyed this series of videos. Not only are the tips and techniques helpful and fun to try, but you also include examples of artists who use the techniques. Many of them I have heard of but you have brought to my attention many that I had not heard of! Now I am off to go down a Google rabbit hole of discovering more artists! 😄

I love the way of using the scraper edge here, I have not tried doing this yet but now I really want to see where my work could go doing this. Thanks again for a great video! 🙂

One thing I learned to be aware of is when you paint anything on the edges of a painting remember that if it is going to be framed to keep in mind that the lip of the frame could eat up at least a 1/4 inch all around, or more...if you want something to show you may have to paint that shape a bit bigger or wider to make sure it it seen well if it really matters in your painting. The same goes with where you put a signature...if it is down on the edge it will get covered by the lip of the frame. I make sure I sign well away from any edge of the work. At least an inch in from any edge is a good rule.
