Old school scale models - The classic 1/35 Tamiya Leopard 1 tank military miniature from 1969

  • This is a classic 1/35 scale armor kit, the original Tamiya Leopard 1. When this groundbreaking kit was first released in 1969 the real German Leopard 1 tank was cutting-edge, on the front lines defending Europe from the USSR. Fifty years later the Bolsheviks are gone and original Leopard 1 tanks are museum pieces - so just how well does Tamiya's ancient model kit version hold up in 2020?
    (Hint - I'm an unashamed fan of old Tamiya kits, but this return to old-school modelling is gruelling even for me...)

    Oh God. you awoke a memory of over 40 years. At Christmas 1978 I received three scale models as a gift: an aircraft carrier (whose box was taller than me), a flying fortress and a 1/24 car. On those vacations we traveled to Mexico City (I lived in a small town) and discovered the toy section of a department store. I begged them to buy me a tank and the instructions indicated the operation of a candle and the screwdriver. Days later I broke the rear axle of the car and tried to repair it with heat. I was 8 years old.

    Great work on a fun old project. Back to basics with a classic kit and it sounds like you couldn't have had more fun with a modern kit. Kits these days don't require fire to build them at least! Maybe we should bring that back :)
    My first build was a 1970s Tamiya kit, and that was simply a breeze. Great kit to get into the hobby 50 years ago and it still was 5 years ago. That is why Tamiya is legendary.

    I have built this kit and I actually don´t see any differences between this and newer kits. On contrary I think this is a very detailed model. You can tell just looking at the surface of the tank. It is really well made to look like solid metal and they nailed it!

    • @DavesModelWorkshop
      @DavesModelWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel it is missing some of the finer detail of a modern kit, things like tool attachments, etc. but the overall feel is great, as you say.

      I did consider that - as you say, it's not hard to source that replacement. But I wanted to see if I could make the original kit shine. I certainly wouldn't blame anyone for replacing that barrel, it really is the main weak point in the kit.

    • @DavesModelWorkshop
      @DavesModelWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For the gun barrel, I glued the two halves together, held them secure with clothes pegs until it was fully dried - that seemed to sort out the warped shape issue. Then I sanded to get rid of the seams between the two halves, trying to not get rid of any detail engraved in the plastic. You also need to make sure the barrel still looks fairly circular in cross-section when you sand it, you won't want it to end up oval in shape. Good luck!

    Good stuff. Also reminds us that we make models. We actually don’t want everything done for us. For example, people buy metal barrels and tracks...well then why build it in the first place? There are tank models now where basically the entire upper hull is already complete......yawn.

    • @DavesModelWorkshop
      @DavesModelWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m torn on this. Yes, I love using lots of skills to rectify mistakes and bring old stuff up to modern standards. But I also appreciate a modern kit that is well engineered and just works the way it should. I agree you still want the build process, I wouldn’t want a kit with an entire hull pre-moulded. I think that’s why I was so blown away by Wingnut Wings, their kits are utterly mind blowing and feel centuries away from this old 60s engineering, but there is still a huge amount of skill required to build one.

    • @arcitejack
      @arcitejack 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave's Model Workshop ...so I recently bought a Wingnut and I feel I need a couple more models under my belt before I start. But it is a gorgeous kit and you can tell actual humans designed it. Models tell stories. Making models is fun a hell.
