    At last, a youtube modeller who understands that tanks get VERY dirty and dusty. Most models show too much unrealistic rust and chipping and nowhere near enough muck and dirt, probably because the modeller is copying other models rather than looking at photos. Nothing wrong in that, of course, but it's good to see someone who gets this fundamental point and wants to reproduce it in miniature. Great video!

      Agree 💯 Chipping seems to be really fashionable and even though these people are probably modellers than me I've not seen any Ww2 tanks with any where near the amount of chips on them.

    Hey Hank
    Been a modeller (mainly military a/c) for over fifty years. Always built AFV's as 'a sideline' but not 'seriously' until about five or six years ago when YT tutorials really started to take off and products from the likes of Legend, Value Gear, Vallejo, AK and Mig Jimenez became more and more available.
    Long story short, I really struggle with pigments, I almost always apply way too much, even when I 'know' that it's less than last time ".... This video is, IMHO, the single best on pigment application that I've seen. Perfectly lit, edited and narrated, absolutely clear as to what's happening and perhaps most importantly no generic thrash metal or 'popular classics' in the background. Sincerely, thanks for this it's excellent, going to recommend you to my armour-builder mates here in Middle Earth.
    Links to two of my better, more recent AFV builds if you're interested. Have a Tamiya Achilles on the bench right now and will be using this video as a guide for the dust in the next few days. ( that build here: imodeler.com/groups/work-in-progress-armored-vehicles-and-artillery/forum/topic/achilles/ ).

    Fantastic techniques - really like the way this Churchill turned out. I learn something new in every video you put out!
    It is important to look at historical reference photos, but remember that cameras back then were not as robust as they are today. The cameras typically wouldn’t come out in really bad weather when the tanks were at their muddiest. If you at photos of modern tanks on exercise you’ll see many totally covered in mud including mud all over the turret.

    Using Mod Podge for water streaking is a brilliant! You're right. No other You Tube video has shown this technique! This comes at a perfect time as I'm about to start building a 1:16 scale of the Serman Easy Eight. Thanks for the tip! For dust effect I was expecting you to use a light spray of Tamiya XF57 Buff.

    I think also what helps is to look at various vehicles for specific areas of Europe. The type of weathering in Italy will be different from say Norway. Also time of year being modeled also makes a huge difference. Winter in Germany wet mud would be everywhere, and thick on the lower portions. Snow rain etc on top. Summer is dry and dusty. Spring or fall might be a mix. Also when paint chiped and rust was setting in you just took more paint and slogged it on top of the rust. Don't ask what was in that paint, but it stuck and worked.

    Very helpful, I’ve tried pigments a couple times and couldn’t figure out how to keep it on the tank! I’ll definitely be trying this on my M3 Lee I’m wrapping up. Quick question…are you doing this on top of your post-decal clear coat, and does this require another clear coat to ‘seal in’ the dust effect or does the drying effect of the enamel thinner lock it down well enough?

    • @SpruesNBrews
      @SpruesNBrews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A very good question! All of this is on top of my final matte clear coat - I usually apply a gloss coat, apply decals & let them dry, apply a second gloss coat, do my pin washes, and then apply a final matte coat. After that, I move on to pigments & final weathering effects. I don't put any clear coats over the pigments, as I find that sort of messes up the effect. The thinner does a good enough job of holding everything in place, but you do have to be careful handling the model afterwards as to not leave any fingerprints. Hope that's helpful - and good luck with the M3! Happy building 🍻

    Great video Hank! My question is why not use pigment fixer? What is your opinion between E. thinner and fixer? Does enamel thinner affect your wash?

    • @SpruesNBrews
      @SpruesNBrews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A pigment fixer would likely work a bit better here, but I had thinner handy & it works very well also!

  • @kaptkrunchfpv

    did you put a final dullcote/varnish on the vehicle to seal everything in?

  • @robertevans3173
    @robertevans3173 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice work.
    Why didn't you use isopropyl to help lock in the pigments before you paint it?

    • @SpruesNBrews
      @SpruesNBrews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh I haven't heard of that approach!

    • @robertevans3173
      @robertevans3173 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpruesNBrews approach as normal, but when it comes to the 'locking it in' mist iso over the model and let it fall onto the pigment. It will soak through making it easier to seal.
