The Mystery of MAYA: Nasadiya Suktam - Vedic Hymn of Creation

  • In this famous hymn from the Rig Veda, a great rishi (ancient sage) poetically depicts the emergence of the entire universe due to the mysterious and inexplicable power of Maya. Entire hymn recited at 19:35.
According to the non-dual teachings of advaita Vedanta, maya is a creative power that enables non-dual brahman, the underlying reality because of which everything exists, to give rise to the world of duality. The use of this particular word, maya, indicates a mystery that lies beyond the mind (manas), senses (indriyas), and reasoning (buddhi). Maya is said to consist of avarana shakti, the capacity to cover or obscure the underlying reality, and vikshepa shakti, the capacity to project a world of duality when all that truly exists is non-dual brahman.
Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: www.arshabodha...

Thank you for carrying our Vedic culture and spreading it with such simplicity. I thank the Gods for the foreigners who have understood Vedas and other Sanskrit works and then brought it to the world. It helps even thousands of Indian youth who can connect better with such English descriptions than the traditional Sanskrit way of teaching. This sad thing happened because we stopped teaching Hindu children Sanskrit, Vedas, and instead forced English upon them. While we are busy losing our 3500 years old heritage, the foreigners are helping preserving it.

In india those who impart knowledge and humility are regarded as living god . we dont take their lives off like in other counttries. we dont have the ego thought that i am one and only supreme therefore we dont destroy their teachings or degrade the person but we keep them on our heart and worship their wisdom. Lots of respects to guruji

Swami, Thank You for filling in the missing piece for me by explaining that when we are in dreamless sleep we are still aware but the mind has gone to sleep. Now I understand when the wise men talk about the 3 states of waking, dreaming and dreamless sleep. This is from another EXCELLENT video of yours. It has lasting impact for me, so Thank You.

Even though you were born in a western country you came to India and learnt sitting at the feet of swamy Dayananda Saraswati. you have strived hard to acquire this knowledge of ancient Rishis. The great Guruji has very succinctly illuminated our mind on the concept of Advaita ,non-duality ,ie there is no distinction between the creator and created . That ties in with the modern concept of beginning of the universe , dark energy ,dark matter and the big bang . Hari Hi Om!

Wow. I just practiced written self therapy by writing questions out to myself in the idea of a psychologist asking me in their lovely and soothing office, and myself answering them without filtering my thoughts and words.
I nearly wrote everything discussed in this lecture.
I was breaking down what celibacy means to me and, deconstructing my written verbiage to analyze the key components which made up each word and what it’s place means in the particular sentence which it was inserted for expression. It took me deep into my psyche.

    At 13 years old
I use to contemplate how this world around came into existence.
I decided to write my own scripture, completely disregarding the Bible due to it's lack of information..
At that time vedas were unknown to me...
But in my own written scripture the beginning started with a verse So similar to this.
    Except, my words were
Emptiness, as Female, who sparked realization of herself,
realizing that she was alone, she then longed for Another like her
This longing or spark which multiplied inside bursting out of her manifested
So her Companion (the universe) came to be...

mam you shoul read the devi ( goddess) suktam in rigveda, the god in hinduism has no gender :
Ancient texts of Hinduism expound a reverence for the feminine. The 10th chapter of the Rigveda, for example, asserts the feminine to be the supreme principle behind all of cosmos, in the following hymn called as Devi Sukta,[1][2] :-
I am the Queen, the gatherer-up of treasures, most thoughtful, first of those who merit worship.
Thus Gods have established me in many places with many homes to enter and abide in.
Through me alone all eat the food that feeds them,-each man who sees, breathes, hears the word outspoken
They know it not, yet I reside in the essence of the Universe. Hear, one and all, the truth as I declare it.
I, verily, myself announce and utter the word that gods and men alike shall welcome.
I make the man I love exceeding mighty, make him nourished, a sage, and one who knows Brahman.
I bend the bow for Rudra that his arrow may strike and slay the hater of devotion.
I rouse and order battle for the people, I created Earth and Heaven and reside as their inner controller.
On the world's summit I bring forth the Father: my home is in the waters, in the ocean.
Thence I prevade all existing creatures, as their Inner Supreme Self, and manifest them with my body.
I created all worlds at my will, without any higher being, and permeate and dwell within them.
The eternal and infinite consciousness is I, it is my greatness dwelling in everything.

I practiced gratitude moment by every waking moment once for a 2 week period. I was filled with power but I ignorantly wasted it. Another time I chanted the Hari Krishna 'chant' or 'mantra' moment by every waking moment for 2 weeks. Again, filled with power and lifted onto a higher vibration. You can't explain consideration for others to a 2 year old. The child has to grow into the higher vibration. So, do your mantra and see what happens. :)

Thanks to Swamiji for the video ! The portion seems to be a little absurd between 2:14 to 3:03 . That is, the first thing mentioned is, Brahman is THE only non-dual reality. So, mathematically put, there is only set called null (non-dual) set that exists (which is real). The immediate following statement is, there is something else, called MAYA associated with non-dual null. If only null set exists, how can one justify the existence of another set containing MAYA. Sorry if the question sounds argumentative. I'm asking this question with all respect for the Swamiji. It would be nice if someone (not necessarily Swamiji) can clarify this absurdity/my misunderstanding.

Ishvara (the Holy Unity composed of the Holy Trinity Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) was the first movement of the Absolute (may The One be adored eternally) in Manifestation. In a way, Maya is the creative power (Brahma) of the Almighty Ishvara.

@Aditya Kumar Pandey According to our (Parikshith Religious Members) current theory, we believe that there must be two consciousness , one is constant and the other as variable. We are imposing constant consciousness as god, who is independent always wealthy never experiences poor. Whereas variable consciousness is dependent on constant consciousness, who experiences both richness and poorness. And agree with you that variable consciousness can have the ability to experience non Duality or eternity.

I think In these lectures, he is trying to equalize jeevtma as parmathma, which is wrong. Parmathma is one who is independent all time, whereas jeevathma is dependent some times in state of duality. Non Duality is the highest state of jeevathma but it is not called as paramathma.

It has all the description of Grandest Saraswati river flowing from mighty Himalaya to Sea in the south , existed some more then 40 K BCE, which subsequently dried up by 10 K BCE It surpring that at such deep antiquity our Rishis tried to imagine about big bang concept.

Any explanation on Brahman is maya. It is that cannot be explained or unexplained, cannot be think or not think, cannot be experienced or not experienced... So when we try to convey any message of it, we use metaphors like the Swamiji did. We must grasp the central message from this or vedanta also.
      Brain Feed!
Modern science has gone too far as they reached to atoms. They first discovered that everything is atom. Then they experimented more and found electron, proton and neutron. After that, they discovered the emptiness/nothingness in the atom. This is where Gautama Buddha reached. "Sarvam duhkham, Sarvam anityam, Sarvam sunyam"... All is sorrow, all is impermanent, all is empty ~ This is what Gautama Buddha's teaching is.
Now focus on a simple thing of life -
What is "thought"? See it in your first person experience.
Is it made of atoms? Or is it Empty?
      ~ Good Luck ~

Just go through any texts from any of the world religions, flip pages upon pages and find out the chapters, if any, in there defining the scene creating the Cosmos. You will find none except RigVeda.

If pralaya is caused when the karma of all living beings as you said, then why again does the cosmos manifest and you say in another later time it is because of the unbalanced karma of previous lives. I am confused

Shree Ramana Maharshi could say : I A(1)M(13) = N+I+R+V+I+K+A+L+P+A (113), with letters as numbers by Brahman design... that 8th spoke in Buddhist Wheel of Life... 888... the 7th means Nirvana... 777...

Namaste Swami ji, calling the 14 lokas myth-ology means they don't exist, which is not the case. Just an observation here.

Because it appeals logical mind... How can you give proof if it is non-physical in nature.. something that's physical that has proof... If it is non physical than it is only experienceal that does not have proof..

If world cycle ends when all living beings’ karma’s are completely exhausted then, to begin the next cycle, how Maya can create intelligent beings based on their “past” karmas? There are no “past” karmas remaining for anyone.

Maya is the vital creative power that associates with the non-dual Brahm to make it the Creator, the Sustainer (Preserver) and the Destroyer. When the universe is in un-mainfest state (after the last cycle of Dissolution and prior to the next round of Creation), only Brahm and Maya exist, nothing else. -- OK
The power of Maya, by its extraordinary capacity for unlimited creativity, makes the universe manifest once again. -- OK
The initial drive or impulse to make the universe manifest again is the result of the Karmas accumulated by those who lived in the prior cycles of creation. -- I DON'T THINK SO.
After the cycle of creation has begun, Maya covers and hides the Brahm, so we cannot comprehend it without making effort in that direction.
