    As an artist and art history/archeology buff this is great stuff-definitely reinforcing the idea of paintings being three dimensional but I didn’t know the specificity of materials, but it’s kind of obvious in hindsight 😅

    I’m an artist and I’m an armchair Art history buff. I absolutely love the intricacies of physical examination of painting, no matter the period. I’m also interested in the verso of paintings. The backside. The front dazzles me with technique, creativity and imagery while the back gives the history of the piece. The provenance, it’s life.

  • @DavidAWA
    @DavidAWA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Whenever I go to a museum, I take a low angle view of the paintings. When you get the light reflecting on the brush strokes just right, you can see brush strokes painted beneath the visible layer. Sometimes it seems like changes the artist made.

    I studied arts, and there is so much to say about art of painting especially classical works of old masters but not only. Anyways please mind ONE important thing THOSE masterpieces should be experienced in person, go to museum or gallery and view em yourself. There's no reproduction/album even most beautifully printed that can transfer this experience. And what also amazing education helps to understand em, but is not necessary - opened mind and senses are sometimes enough. When you find the right art , art that will connect with your sensitivity I guarantee transcendental experiences, you just need to recognize what affects you most.

    I'm not particularly interested in paintings, but I'll say it's absolutely worth seeing them in person. The experience is totally different from looking at pictures on a monitor or in art books. I used to wonder what the point was of art museums, if you can see a reproduction of the image, but there's so much that those reproductions fail to capture.

    Interesting! I had noticed the difference in cracks on a painting but like you I thought it might be weather related.

    • @PhilEdwardsInc
      @PhilEdwardsInc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah, I was kinda surprised by that (and still don't fully understand it).
      I think the weather affects the rate of decay for sure, but maybe not the shape of the cracks as much. In addition to that example in the video, Bucklow noted another interesting one: "For example, the results of theoretical studies of (nineteenth-century American) paintings on canvas suggest that the underlying models relate more closely to the examples of French rather than Dutch paintings observed in this study."
      So apparently the technique difference matters so much that it could even work across continents as a means of IDing stuff (in a limited way).
