I own a 13 kw solar system. I think panels do not distract on aesthetics of the home. I have limited roof space. Many of my panels are 360 watts. The battery storage really saves money with night power, outages, and assisting with charging EV’s. In Hawaii I save $600/month on gas and home electricity.
$600/MONTH "saved"? Must be a nice house in Hawaii! My electricity bills might be $100/month w/hotter summers and colder winters here in MD. Yeah, it's a townhouse but the numbers are out of whack. Electricity/gas cost 2 or 3x as much?
We just had the Tesla solar roof installed (15.1 kW system with 2 Powerwall+ batteries) and the Tesla installation team completed this work in just over 4 days! Great job by the team. With the federal solar discount the price came out to $52.5k which was extremely competitive. Great product and I love to see some solid competitors enter this space! CLARIFICATION 1/5/22: At 11:02 in the video, there is a comparison made that needs clarification. The video states, “Given the GAF shingle’s dimensions and its 45 watt rating, it would produce, at maximum, 5.96 watts per square foot.” However, because of the way GAF Energy’s shingles overlap on the roof, 56% of each shingle is made up of non-solar material. If you consider the efficiency of only the active solar cells, GAF Energy's shingle produces 14.29 watts per square foot, which the company says would be on par with the efficiency of Tesla’s shingle.
I bought a new home in the desert. The builder put solar on and it was included in the price of the home. I upgraded another 3K dollars. My electric bill was 15 dollars per month in the summer running an air conditioner. So happy with my solar panels. I think the ones GAF Energy have look good. In the long run, I hope they do really well. They may want to build an alliance with home builders in states where solar is mandated on all new builds.
@@usadaytrader let alone breaking down the cost it is still better, nobody is implying that the low monthly energy bills = 100% savings as you do have to factor in the cost of ownership on the solar panels of course. But also the fact that it’s renewable energy. Also that you can have a power bank and store it and have energy during power outages. Pretty useful tech. Your talking about cost and depreciation from a phone/tablet/computer which will decline as fast and cost easily $1k and easily upwards.
@MrGriff305 have you not seen v3 tesla solar roofs? I have one and it's the most beautiful roof it makes clay roofs look like relics. Most people don't have any idea and once I tell them they are blown away.
@MrGriff305 the gafs? Yeah they are ugly once they figure our how to make those tiles "floating" and hide the cords underneath they have a good product
Some people want better aesthetics, some want higher efficiency, or greater total system power. The best products will try to achieve best in class in every metric, but reality often limits that. Nothing wrong with targeting a product to be the best in one customer want/metric if the target market is large enough
I think you're wrong at 11:01. You're factoring in the entire panel even though most of the top part of it is covered up by the previous panel. Looking at the man holding the panel at 11:21, we can determine that the height of the actual photovoltaic portion is less than half, so about 7 inches, and the width needs to have about 3 inches removed from the right side. Rough math shows that the panel would produce about 10.1 watts of power/sq. ft and not ~6 watts.
I'm just glad people are working on this. Every new tech has a rough start. Imagine the world in 2050. But the future is made and not waited on. In the meantime, I'll take rack solar when I can afford it because it is just an ease of mind to remove and repair and I don't mind the looks at all. In fact, it looks cool and futuristic to me. I smile whenever I see a solar rack on any roof and it makes me happy.
Agreed, when I look at how rapidly renewable energy is being deployed in my area I’m amazed. I personally can’t wait to buy my own place and install solar. I’ve run through the numbers a million times and know the exact size of system I need…just need a house to put it on hahaha.
The world in 2050 won't longer need solar. The Transition (apocalypse for those of a religious incline) would have been consumated and a new type of non-contaminating source of energy will be employed across the globe. The sad part of course is that most of the old world (aka 'us") would be gone.
@@jeremyjackson7429 you want to install solar now or even better in the past. This is badass. I used to roof and know GAF makes good products and will be around for a long time. As the tech advances this is going to just get better and better. Totally key to be able to install with regular roofing tools by real roofers that already know how to properly seal a roof.
The only problem is they don't have the brand recognition like Tesla - so it'll be more difficult for solar to take off unless companies partner with names like Apple, Microsoft, Meta, or Amazon.
Here's why I could prefer these over panels. I don't want the additional perforations from rack mounts. The chance of leaks with mounts is higher than without them. Yes, "just get a good installer" can improve chances, but it's not a guarantee. And having known of cases locally of some pretty bad leaks from rack mounts (yes, I know many don't have problems) I would very much be interested in a product that goes on the decking like standard shingles if they have no higher chance of leaks than standard shingles. The first job of any roof is to keep out the elements. Solar is secondary. Not willing to compromise one whit on the primary purpose of a roof for any secondary function.
@@fuckthisksksjjksdfjd Yes, that's the one scenario where I would feel comfortable with rack mount is with a standing seam metal roof where it could clamp on the seams. Don't care for the aesthetic of the standing seam roofs so that would be the biggest hurdle :)
My families 1,800sqft was quoted $50k for a turn key photovoltaic system that would cover 100% of the electric bill. After some research, and being an electronics technician, I was able to buy the correct system for $13k cash delivered to our home and I installed it.
I've had solar panels for over 10 years . I wouldn't put them on the roof . A frame in the yard is better . They remain cooler so more efficient . Easier to clean and they do need cleaned from time to time . Just maintenance and troubleshooting is easier on the ground . If you have the room keep them bolted to a frame high enough to mow under .
The problem for GAF is they are targetting composite shingle roofs customers. And composite shingle roofs are relatively cheap compared to alternatives like tile. Tesla targeted homes with tile roofs which are expensive with their SolarRoof product. The price of our Solar Roof was less than the price of a replacement tile roof with solar panels.
Asphalt shingles are used in over 80% of US roofing projects, so I fail to see how this is a problem for GAF... They're targeting what most of us use. Tiles are used in ~5% of US roofs. What you're basically saying is that Tesla's targeting wealthy people. Plus, I'd honestly be shocked if 90%+ of the people buying the Tesla solar roof aren't Tesla shareholders. Why someone would risk their own homes for another one of Musk's experiments is beyond me. The really silly thing is that Tesla's expensive solar roof products are getting larger subsidies simply for the fact that they cost more. Why the subsidy isn't based on output, rather than a set percentage on cost is anyone's guess. Corruption sounds about right though. So to you my friend, I say I'm glad I could help you pay for that fancy new roof.
@@updlate4756 so the guy who went from college student to world’s richest man in 25 years is not innovative? Targeting upper end roof installations is smart. Customers can pay more for features. Then you can work on driving costs out as you learn more about the tech. These benefits low priced buyers as the tech becomes a commodity item.
@@updlate4756 you failed to notice that Tesla roof gives 17 kWh per square foot, while GFA 6 kWh. Of course the solar panel gives a bit more still, it makes sense that if Tesla solar gives three times the output of GFA and comparing to ordinary solar panels which give even more output, Tesla solar roof covers entire roof area, which isn't the case for GFA nor for ordinary panels. I would personally prefer Tesla, if it were available in my country.
@@JBoy340a But that is not how he is personally marketing them. Musk never comes out and says Tesla products are just for wealthy people, when they objectively are. Where is the 35k Model 3? Tesla is niche and will continue to be so, they don't seem to have the appetite for mass market low profit margin products.

You right folks , this is going to fit on new projects or replacement , or perfectly for those who just want to get the system , exactly like when you have a good perfect 2020 car but wants the 2022 model
unless they can beat a shingled roof plus rack mounted in price, i think their product will fail. they are not in the same market as tesla solar. Tesla is about roof appearance, while GAFs looks just as bad a roof mounted. So they are competing against roof mounted, not Tesla.
Ya, "this has been around since 1970s" shows pictures of flimsy and mismatched solar panels ingressed into a roof. Literally lacks the 2 benefits of Tesla solar roof (durability and looks) so obviously none of it caught on. Not saying they are completely trash, but probably should just be compared to normal solar roofs. Also GAF power density seems to be trash..... so ya not so great. add on you are only saving 10k to go from a higher power output and tile roof to shingle roof. Doesn't seem to good for them. Hopefully they can drop the price given how low the material cost of them seems to be
@@ntb3884 I think the other thing might be the customer experience. I have heard horror stories about how great Tesla is on the sales side, and on support after the installation has gone live, but that the in between part is a nightmare. If GAF can get their solar shingle solution up in a day or two, and have excellent support for customers throughout the process, they might win over a huge customer base. Tesla solar roof is like their vehicles: high end and high price. GAF solar shingles might be the Nissan Leaf of the industry, if they can get their pricing right, and make them more affordable for the masses.

The bane of rooftop solar has been that roofers aren't electricians and electricians aren't roofers -- and you don't want either trying to pretend to be the other. LIkewise, solar panels aren't cost-effective water management devices and complicate the water management system, especially when it needs to be replaced. This product is a big step forward. Question: Can these panels be easily removed and replaced when the roof reaches the end of it's life? What's the procedure if a solar panel needs to be removed for a repair before the end of the roof's life?
I was recently informed by a GAF solar shingle installer that I must have my entire roof shingled when this product is used or else GAF could not offer a warranty. This was a problem for me because only 6 months ago I had one side of my house re-roofed (Owens-Corning) due to leaks, but now that I am ready for solar I would be required to re-roof that side again - only this time with GAF - before I could get a warranty with the GAF solar shingles. It's all-or-nothing with GAF.
My main concern would be ease of repair / replacement. I suspect it is a lot easier to replace a rack mounted panel that has been damaged by hail than their on-roof shingle. The rack mount just seems simpler. Why over-complicate things for aesthetics. It's just a roof!
Keep in mind Tesla doesn't just sell solar roofs, they sell regular solar panels as well. Tesla is targeting both traditional panels and highly integrated tiles that blend in, these companies seem to be targeting the middle ground. They are different niches, not competing just yet.
@@KandaEzana sounds like nothing but wishful thinking but alright. People have been trying to cancel musk for years and years and years, and here he is , the richest man on the planet. Keep wishing tho , that will still never happen.
I called GAF - they referred me to their website to search for a contractor - not one of the 20 "master Elite contractors" knows anything about Solar Shingles - Additionally not one of the 20 installers near me in NJ can even do solar panels. Another example of how companies marketing and PR departments are way ahead of their actual ability to sell or install the vapor products they dream up
Yeah Elon seemed to think what’s holding back solar roof was the look, but it’s the price! Supposedly solar cost is shrinking but the past 10 years I keep checking in on solar installers and solar of all types still way too expensive.
You made a wrong choice..in couple of years you will see granules coming off GAF shingles. You should have gone for Certainteed..their shingles are the best!
A big black plastic bag to cover a roof night cost less than $20. Just plug in a hose to one end and another hose slightly larger on the other end and it can drive a small gas turbine with maybe five or ten percent electrical efficiency. The birds and squirrels might chew holes in it in one day. But it could probably power and heat a house. If the bag costs $20 and the gas turbine costs $1000, you could buy hundreds of bags for the price of a new roof or solar panels. If the gas turbine can run off of natural gas, it can replace the furnace and the backup generator. It could be used to sell electricity to the power grid. 100 kwh a day is about $5000 a year.
I really hope GAF is able to deliver a good long term solar solution, the world needs it. Having said that, while I found this video to be fairly comprehensive, I would have liked to have heard how GAF compares to Tesla in extreme weather like hail. I realize that Tesla roofs are way more expensive, and I realize that it is very new, but the GAF roof is very new also. I have seen videos where a Tesla panel has been hit with a hammer repeatedly and remained intact and according to at least one builder video I saw, if one does break the time to repair is very small.
What's the tensile strength? How do they compare in extreme climate heat damage, hail impact heavy snow load, consistent heavy rains waterproofing? Warranty comparisons? Out of pocket estimated service, average service costs?
The 'faux' tiles were the mistake. The connections in a larger solar panel connected to others can be complex and expensive. It is more than just 'line in, line out.' Long vinyl panels similar in shape and installation as sheet metal would not only simplify these connections and lower price, but roofing companies would already be familiar with most of the install.
For those of us in the Snowbelt parts of the United States and Canada, would the panels survive icing conditions and the extreme swings in temperatures?
11:00 "hard to see how it is more efficient" - it would be a lot easier to see which one is more efficient if you compare their performance at least 2-3 years in. One may degrade slower than the other.
The issue with this is that the consumer assumes all the risk. I as a homeowner would like to know pricing, what's the warranty, does it require a maintenance contract. Also in Florida how will it effect my Insurance premium as it will be very costly to replace should a hurricane rip off the roof or damage. There are still roofs in Miami with tarps that were damaged in 2018 from hurricane Irma so I could just imagine the delay with this new technology. This is also not taking into consideration the current supply chain shortages that's impacting all industries.
These companies are not dealing with the main reason panels are not being snapped up by businesses and consumers around the world. And that is COST, far to expensive for most people.
Wrong. Solar energy is increasingly the cheapest installed energy, the reason it isn't being snapped up is because we allow fossil users to not pay the real cost of their consumption.

With the 2023 Inflation reduction act, 30% can be claimed on the total price. Normally only the solar part has the tax credit but since the roofing is integrated, i.e. it can’t be separated, the total cost gets the tax credit. So, very beneficial for people who need to replace roof.
It is starting to take off because it is what happens when large businesses (Tesla) in the US lobby to save the environment with all eletric cars and trucks. It is thes best way to make money. Own solar, eletric cars, power bank, smart phones, energy farms, etc. You basically have a monopoly on where the money goes (Tesla's pocket). Also it is a late 1800s tech. It is a cheaper alternative that poor people can afford. Easier infrastructure to set up. While more developed nations like in Europe made mass infrastructure changes to include hydrogen. That includes underground pipes and refuel stations. Hydrogen can also be used to generate power, etc. They can also go beyond cars and trucks. They can fuel planes, jets, cargo ships, etc. While other nations push for a stronger future, the US is stuck in the late 1800s. Don't forget batteries always lose their charge. So you will have to pay for replacement and service. Something the news will not highlight over and over again. Yeah you can buy solar... sounds good to go eletric. but it pays... in what 15+ years depending on your system. While your normal monthly eletric bill is around $100+ a month. You will have to wait and by then you will have to purchase replacement solar panels and the cycle begins all over again. Save the environment? The world's giant ICE cube 😅 has been melting since the beginning of human life. But yeah. We should change since it is melting faster than usual, but for a better alternative like hydrogen. This house is in sunny Florida and has a $100 to $200 monthly electric bill depending on the season. A normal architectural shingle roof estimate was $18k. At the time the solar roof cost was 1/3 of the house value.
You need to compare the cost of the roof + PV to the Tesla solar roof, not just the roof alone. Second of all asphalt shingles are the cheapest product on the market, there are far more expensive roofing products. Asphalt shingles also have a shorter life than a Tesla solar roof, so that also has to be factored in. Lastly most Tesla roofs don't cost $110k. It's like saying why is a Porsche is so expensive compared to a Chevy when both take you from A to B.

Local man discovers others care about appearance
Some people want better aesthetics, some want higher efficiency, or greater total system power. The best products will try to achieve best in class in every metric, but reality often limits that. Nothing wrong with targeting a product to be the best in one customer want/metric if the target market is large enough
I think in the end, if it can actually replace your regular shingles, that’s a cost saving so you don’t have to buy them anymore.
@@colonelbanditsix it’s not like it really matters but the real preoccupations should be with storage battery or insulation of the house.
You both need to do your research. I'll be surprised if there's a world in 2050. The climate change we've already induced is irreversible.
You don't have that issue with standing seam metal roofs, the racking system simply attached to the standing seam, no perforations.
@@fuckthisksksjjksdfjd Yes, that's the one scenario where I would feel comfortable with rack mount is with a standing seam metal roof where it could clamp on the seams. Don't care for the aesthetic of the standing seam roofs so that would be the biggest hurdle :)
Interesting points. I’ll have to keep them in mind when I eventually own a home and am getting quotes.
Why did you use the word 'our'?

A year later I'm curious how did this work out for you? What's the avg cost for a roof like this under your business?
unless they can beat a shingled roof plus rack mounted in price, i think their product will fail. they are not in the same market as tesla solar.
Hopefully they can drop the price given how low the material cost of them seems to be
They should conduct a research on who cares about appearance
@@ntb3884 I think the other thing might be the customer experience. I have heard horror stories about how great Tesla is on the sales side, and on support after the installation has gone live, but that the in between part is a nightmare. If GAF can get their solar shingle solution up in a day or two, and have excellent support for customers throughout the process, they might win over a huge customer base. The bane of rooftop solar has been that roofers aren't electricians and electricians aren't roofers -- and you don't want either trying to pretend to be the other.
A few dozen screws versus just some shingles. Idk. And anesthetics do matter.
Hail damage on shingles is probably worse than on panels
It rarely rains in my region. Plenty of sun year around.
Keep in mind Tesla doesn't just sell solar roofs, they sell regular solar panels as well. Tesla is targeting both traditional panels and highly integrated tiles that blend in, these companies seem to be targeting the middle ground. They are different niches, not competing just yet.

Good on them on innovating in this space but seriously those GAF panels don't look aesthetically better at all.
How will you clean them? They need to be cleaned weekly.
What's the tensile strength? How do they compare in extreme climate heat damage, hail impact heavy snow load, consistent heavy rains waterproofing? Warranty comparisons? Out of pocket estimated service, average service costs?
Interesting stuff. Can't wait to see what the future holds. 💪😃
The 'faux' tiles were the mistake. The connections in a larger solar panel connected to others can be complex and expensive. It is more than just 'line in, line out.'
Long vinyl panels similar in shape and installation as sheet metal would not only simplify these connections and lower price, but roofing companies would already be familiar with most of the install.
I love when cnbc makes these long advertisements
For those of us in the Snowbelt parts of the United States and Canada, would the panels survive icing conditions and the extreme swings in temperatures?
11:00 "hard to see how it is more efficient" - it would be a lot easier to see which one is more efficient if you compare their performance at least 2-3 years in. One may degrade slower than the other.
Those shingles look even worse than solar panels lmao
How do the GAF solar shingles hold up with errant golf balls and hail storms.
They are nailing pretty damn close to the panel...and how is the shingles physically 'glued' together or Iike normal shingles???

More applications to go beyond just cars and trucks.

Ventilation is key for these i would imagine. Constant heat, and electronic components don’t mix well. Especially with dew and just everyday wear and tear

Yes it is but it's risky to do it yourself if you are inexperienced go get yourself someone good or you could look up *Nancy* *Lynn* *Lewis* on the internet.
Wow! I know Nancy. Met her sometime ago here in North Carolina during a fundraiser. Great speaker, full of humor and rhetorics too…”Mrs buy the dip “. Lol

The GAF solar division is its own company within Standard. Meaning his claim about the warranty and Standards longevity is false. Unless the warranty for the solar shingles specifically states the parent company, Standard, will honor all claims for the duration of said warranty, the warranty is void when/if the solar division goes bankrupt.
"Weeks to install Tesla roof". And yet there are tens of homeowner videos with 5-14 days installs, where solar install process takes 1-2 days, rest is fixing uneven/rotten wood.
Is using a normal solar panel really that hard?
In the past 6 months I have filled out a GAF website request for information regarding a new Timberline solar shingle with the expectation of a new roof within the next 12 months. I have yet to hear from them. Located in Northern California, I have trouble believing that once they found my location on Google Maps that I would not qualify as a potential customer. Pretty poor customer service response makes me wonder how they would treat me if I actually became a customer. They should have responded.
No info on the durability of GAF shingles?
Also these shingles weren’t covering the whole roof…
