From what I've read, it was going to possibly tie into Lucas's sequel trilogy plans where R2 and C-3P0 would have met a mystical being called the 'Keeper of the Whills' and relayed the events of the saga to it, explaining the opening crawl to each film.

Why couldn't the droids recognize anyone?
Lea's foster father, the senator, ordered a soldier in Episode 3 to erase C3PO's memory. It's a very short thing in the movie.
He's just looking at a soldier and says "Have the protocol droid's mind wiped."
It's a thi g of 3 seconds, and you might have forgotten such a minor detail. But it's there.
Oh, and R2D2 knows everything. But he's a real soldier, and knows how tokeepis mouth shut 😉
What's the thing about Obi Wan telling Vader that " if you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."?
At the end of Episode 3,when Luke and Lea are already born, and all the action is over, we can see Yoda telling Obi Wan that he had some training for him.
Obi Wan wonders "Training?", because he is already a very powerful master.
It's at this moment that Yoda reveals to Kenobi that his old master Qui Gon had found a way to back from the after life. And that Yoda would train Obi Wan how to talk to his long dead master.
This is the reason why Obi Wan could talk to Luke in is mind, after Vader killed him.
Remember? "If you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."

The answers to all her questions including your one is that this movie was written as a one off, the subsequent movies in this trilogy weren't even written, which is why Obi-wan doesn't recognise the droids or vice versa, or even why the dynamic between Luke and Leia seems so incestuous. George Lucas didn't even expect the movie to be a hit, going on holiday instead of attending the premiere.
It was only after the success of this film that more were decided to be made and then the inconsistencies added by the prequels were caused by them not this movie. They decided to go down different routes for certain characters which made future movies better I think, but watching the Star Wars movies in chronological order rather than the order in which they are made does give this impression, which is why I'd have started with this one and done the prequels after.

@@chriswerth918 I disagree with you, the only difference is that my answers are correct immediately after the first Star Wars movie, A New Hope, was released whereas those from newer movies made over 20 years later are merely reconning to try and make things fit. It more attention had been paid to the story for the prequels rather than the CGI (and making them kid friendly was well) then it wouldn't have been necessary to try and explain the inconsistencies away.

A few more notes on things that are confusing because you're watching this having seen later movies already:
When this movie was released, the only people in it that Luke was related to were Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen. He wasn't related to Leia or Darth Vader. Lucas did play around with the idea that Leia was Luke's cousin (and Beru/Owen's daughter), but scrapped that prior to release.
Leia also wasn't related to Vader: Princess Leia Organa was her birth name, Bail Organa was her birth father and his unnamed wife was her birth mother (the name Breha hadn't been created yet). Biggs was possibly going to be her brother during some of the earlier drafts, but that got nixed before the final release. Lucas went back and forth between Organa and Antilles for Leia's family name, but eventually settled on Organa and used Antilles for Wedge's surname.
Obi-Wan's description of what happened to Luke's father was meant to be literal: Luke's father was a Jedi who was killed by Darth Vader, a totally different person. The major changes to that were made for the next couple of movies, with further changes in the prequels.
And C3PO and R2D2 had never been to Tattooine before, so they had no reason to remember it. The idea that Anakin built C3PO (or that Anakin was from Tattoine) didn't exist at all.

@Antonio-Gransci This is incorrect. You can google "Darth Vader misconceptions" or look up the Development section of his Wookiepedia page if you want all the citations and background.
Briefly, Lucas has stated many times in interviews that the Darth/Luke familial connection wasn't intended when he wrote Star Wars, it was only added during the writing of Empire Strikes Back-and not even in the first draft. The April 1978 second draft of Empire is when the family connection was conceived and added, in order to punch up Leigh Brackett's original script.
Indeed, in the original 1977 script for Empire, Luke and his father (who is not Darth Vader) talk, and Luke's father reveals to him that he has a sister. Later on in the 1978 second draft, Lucas came up with the idea of having Darth Vader be the father, and the original father went away.
The name thing is even more of a red herring. Originally the name "Darth Vader" was attached to an entirely different character (an Imperial general), and it derived from Lucas liking the sound of "Dark Water" and playing with alternatives to come up with "Darth Vader". It was probably influenced by the fact that Lucas went to high school with a guy named Gary Vader, which sounds silly but is absolutely true (a number of other names in Lucas' work come from real world names, famously Ralph Wookey who was a friend of one of the THX-1138 actors). That "Vader" happens to be similar to the Dutch and German words is entirely coincidental, and when the name was picked it wasn't even meant for the character we all know now.

Vader did not know Padme had given birth. In Revenge Of the Sith, at her funeral, she still appeared to be pregnant. I thought it was funny when you said Luke looked much younger than Leia when they are supposed to be twins. At the time of making the movie, Mark Hamill, who played Luke was 24 while Carrie Fisher, who plays Leia was 19. I do agree that Mark Hamill doesn't look 24 in the movie which is why they are both supposed to be 19 years old.

    • @johnalden5821
      @johnalden5821 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Mark Hamill deliberately played (and maybe overplayed) Luke as a teenager in this movie so that it would emphasize Luke's youth and also his inexperience with the wider world. While Luke has been sheltered as a "farm boy" on a remote planet, Leia grew up as royalty on an important planet at the center of galactic politics. So, Luke had to appear younger and less mature, while Leia had to appear more worldly and mature. The differences in their backgrounds (isolated versus sophisticated) was echoed in the background stories of Anakin and Padme in the prequels.

At the end of Ep.3, Bail Organa tells his captain Anitlles to have Threepio''s mind wiped, so Threepio doesn't remember anything from before. Artoo does, but keeps quiet about it. It's not that Obi-Wan doesn't recognize Artoo, he just says that he never OWNED a droid, and it's true. Obi-Wan never owned a droid because Jedi do not have possessions. They just use the droids that are assigned to them for whatever they need to do. Obi-Wan and Artoo both know that now is not the time to dump a lot of heavy news on Luke. Owen didn't recognize Threepio because Threepio looks different and it's been almost 20 years since they've seen each other. Remember that droids like Artoo and Threepio are generic and very common in the galaxy. Also, notice that Threepio did not even get a chance to give Owen his name.
Luke and Leia are the same age but were brought up in totally different environments. Leia was raised to be a political leader so she is very mature for her age, while Luke is naive, having been brought up in isolation on Tatooine.
No one was originally related when this movie came out. The family relations weren't developed until later movies.

Also C3P0 memory was wiped at the end of episode 3, but not R2 which is why he goes on his reckless adventure to Obi Wan

7, 8, & 9 are not worth reacting to In my mind, they aren't even the canon story because many of the books that continue the story of these characters that were written before Disney took over the IP were so much better than those movies. The sequel movies have no coherency and don't tell any kind of consistent or compelling story. Its made up as they go along. Don't bother with them.

You've asked a lot of questions about why the parents always seem to be killed off before the main character starts the main part of their story. This is the start of a famous method of storytelling going back to the old myths themselves known as "The Hero's Journey." A man named Joseph Campbell wrote a lot about it in general and specifically about how it is used in Star Wars. I think you would enjoy looking it up. If you just google "The Hero's Journey" and "A New Hope" there shouldn't be spoilers.
By the way, I first saw Star Wars when I was 13 and my little sister was 9. I quietly read the opening words to her right in her ear, so she wouls also know what was going on during the movie we were so excited to see!

@Antonio-Gransci Why being so toxic about this? Back when I was keeping up with this kind of thing, Campbell was famous for the the Heroes Journey and I even took a class about it in college about 20 years ago. Like a lot of Star Wars fans at the time, I had the book about how his theory could be applied to A New Hope. It seems that you have data that I have not kept up with, but telling me that my information was out of date would have been sufficient.

    • @LaBlueStateGirl
      @LaBlueStateGirl 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Antonio-Gransci Now I see what you have been taking about, and I see where my writing may have been unclear. I said that the death of a parent was the start (as an oversimplification) of a heroes journey and you must have took that to mean that I meant the whole idea started with Star Wars. I'm sorry that I missed that in your first post, but I guess I couldn't imaging someone even thinking that.
Good, blunt criticism is based on facts, it never needs to start with laughing at someone. That's the part that I found toxic and I stand by that. I know that it's tame compared to Reddit or something, but you wrote to me, a nice older gen x woman who saw Star Wars as a kid who was very interested in getting your correction about Campbell no longer being valid who just didn't feel like getting laughed at this morning.

1 - They erased droids data! it's mentioned in the lasts scenes in ep3
2 - Obi does not recognice r2. he was more of an r4 guy. Anyway, he has lived a lot of adventures with lots of stuff... remembering r2 for him is anything more than remembering any other event or droid ever in his life. It might be important because we've seen ep 1 2 and 3, but those events regarding R2 are little considering obi's entire life as a hole.
3 - Watto was the owner of Anakin and Shmi Skywalker.
4 - Yoda decided he must leave, retire, also mentioned in ep3. He was supper old already and he had enough.
Also, It feels that you were not properly mentally prepared. You should think this was the first SW product ever almost 50 years ago, no other context was there at all to understand better this movie. And also, the original cut was not called ep4 either, nor "A new Hope", back in 77 it was just Star Wars.
You should react to all movies you want, even the new 7 8 9 saga, if you really like SW, you are gonna see them anyway, what stops you really?. But also a mentally prepare state is needed, the new modern disney saga movies are marvel movies, not star wars movies. They are an insult to the Star Wars movies, it's noticeable. They are also bad movies. Everything seems it's there because why not. All restrictions described, mentioned and even necessary for the original plot, are now superfluous, ignored or just they make fun of them. ep 7 starts fine, but then half way and all the way to the 9nth movie is just easy and stupid.

17:55 in the hierarchy they we're basically equal. Darth Vader was a Dark Lord of the Sith who only answered to the Emperor and wasn't technically in the Imperial chain of command at all. The only reason he does what Tarkin says is because he respects him as a military leader and was working with him. It was only after the destruction of the 1st Death Star that he was forced into the Imperial hierarchy, and low at that, as punishment for his failure. However, he often disobeyed the orders of his "superiors" at this time anyway so Imperial command structure really doesn't matter to Vader.

The questions you ask are valid. They probably didnt plan having vader as father and Leia as sister at this point but just made it up later to make it interesting. The whole star wars story line doesnt really fit together but was probably mostly done to make entertaining movies.

The Tatooine filming location is actually in Tunisia, and the double sun is a very Earth-type opticsl illusion called a sun dog seen on occasion in.areas as diversecas China and New Zealand. Tatooine is, in pre-Disney tales, supposed to be an actual system with twin suns, but was a garden planet, covered in forests and grasslands until a great cataclysm caused nearly all surface water to dry up. This may or may not have been a pitched battle between Jedi and Sith. The only surviving native species are Jawas and krayt dragons.

When this film was made, Luke & Leia weren't siblings. Lucas had planned to introduce the sister, a hitherto unseen character, in the 3rd film. By the time preproduction for Return of the Jedi had begun, Lucas realized it was too late to introduce such an important character, so Leia was repurposed into Luke's sister.
When this film was made, only miniatures & stop-motion animation existed as special effects. (Regular effects shots, such as explosions on set, had been around for decades.) The crude green drawings used for targeting, & the diagram of the Death Star were the only CGI in this film when released.
The scene where Han meets Jabba was filmed with a human Jabba. It never appeared in the original theatrical release because Lucas wasn't happy with it. After slug Jabba had been introduced, they reworked the existing footage with a CGI Jabba. I find it amusing they kept the "human being" line of dialogue!
    Chewbacca is a Wookie.

    Here’s the context:
    - R2 remembers EVERYTHING that he experienced during the prequel trilogy. C-3PO had his memory erased at the very end of that trilogy, and so remembers nothing about it.
    - R2 doesn’t reveal information, unless he has specific reason to reveal it (which is almost never the case).
    - R2 and Obi-Wan of course remember each other from the prequel trilogy. But, Obi-Wan in Episode 4 is very carefully concealing the fact that he and R2 had met before, because Obi-Wan wants to not reveal a lot of information to Luke. I think that after a while, R2 perceives what Obi-Wan is doing, and plays along. (R2 perceives that Obi-Wan is not addressing him by name, and avoids saying something like, “What have you been doing all these years? It’s been so long!” within 3PO’s earshot, which would have been bad, because 3PO would then be in a position to translate that, in front of Luke.) (R2 is never shown meeting Luke, even as a baby, so R2 wouldn't remember him.)
    - There are times and places where R2 could have been more revealing about what he knows, but everyone else (including 3PO) only viewed him as a quirky little astro-droid, and so never thought to ask R2 questions about anything ‘deeper’. For example, R2 could have filled in C-3PO about all the details of 3PO’s earlier existence (before 3PO’s memory was erased) - who created 3PO, where he lived, what adventures he had, etc. But, 3PO never thought to ask. (I think that if 3PO had asked, R2 would have told him at least part of it.)
    ••••
Why does Vader comply, when Tarkin gives him an order to stop force-choking the general, rather than just kill Tarkin also?
Tarkin is a Regional Governor, who is also in charge of the Death Star. More broadly, Vader and the various people like Tarkin and the other people in the room, are like various Vice-Presidents and Ministers/Cabinet Secretaries - people just below the Emperor in the Imperial power structure. That power structure is not well defined - except for one thing: ALL of these people have a fear and awe of the Emperor. If Vader were to kill Tarkin, that would be disrespecting the Emperor, which no one wants to risk doing (including Vader). We (the audience) also don’t want Vader to kill Tarkin because Tarkin, while not in Vader’s league, is a pretty loathsome villain, and we’re happy when he dies when the Death Star is destroyed. So, in that context, (the Death Star is Tarkin's 'turf' - Tarkin runs it as the Emperor's proxy), Tarkin CAN give an order to Vader, and Vader will comply with it.

As Peter Jackson put it "Balls to the wall" music. John Williams did an outstanding score, which I still listen to and enjoy immensely. A phenomena arose with the birth of Star Wars: show admission lines stretching literally for 5-10 city blocks, and people going back to see it dozens if not hundreds of times. This was when movie tickets were only $2-$4 a showing. It was also in the theater for what seemed like an entire year. Kind of unheard of today. Desert scenes were filmed in Tunisia, and the jungle scenes in South America.

You have to remember that Episodes 4, 5, and 6 were written and made 20-30 years before 1, 2, 3, and Rogue One. So some details and dialogue regarding the continuity doesn't quite add up 100%. Episode 3 did explain that C-3PO and R2-D2 had their memories erassd, which is why they don't recognize anyone. But it doesn't quite explain why Obi-Wan didn't recognize R2. So that's an example of things not fully adding up. Then again, he could've just been playing coy, but I don't think he has much of a reason to pretend not to know R2.

After this movie became such a big hit, George Lucas was able to go ahead with his original plan.
He had wanted to make his movies in a serial format, much like ones made in the mid-20th century. Serial, meaning an ongoing story split into nine-or-twelve-part movies. Each movie contained cliffhanger endings to entice viewers to keep returning.
George didn't have any scripts ready of course, but that was his hope.

There was no CGI in 1977. They shot on locations. Tattooine was in Tunisia for instance.. And actually the actress playing Princess Leia is only 19.

You are correct about the aliens. Remember Star Wars was a HUGE gamble for Fox at the time. It was expected to fail. The Cantina scene they scrounged up costumes from old movies to add more alien depth. That is why some look like demons or monsters and not aliens. Since they are mixed in it just seems normal.
