    A final fun fact. Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford were all on a plane (not long after the first movie) and Hamill noticed a crowd in the airport (from the plane) with banners (couldnt read them from far) etc. And he said to Carrie that there must be a really famous person on the plan, then he started to look around. Short after he realized that it was a crowd of star wars fans and they were there because of them (i think ive learned this from an interview with mark hamill)

      @ClaytonMacleod ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@VerowakReacts The special effects before the CGI was added years later were incredible for their time. That’s why they won the Oscar for effects, among many other categories they brought home that year. ;) The originals didn’t really have any CGI, as CGI wouldn’t even be a thing commonly used until the late 1980s and early 1990s, which is long after the original trilogy finished up. 1982’s TRON was the first movie to extensively use CGI, but it was incredibly basic stuff. Terminator 2 from 1992 was one of the first movies to use a ton of realistic-looking CGI. The only CGI originally in this movie was the computer display on the wall showing the plans of the Death Star during the meeting before the attack. All the space ships were done with miniatures. All the lasers and the light sabres were rotoscope effects. Pretty much everything else was done practically because that was the only way to do it at the time. Most of the added-in CGI is pretty obviously CGI, making it relatively easy to see what was altered for the Special Editions. It is a nicer experience, an opinion shared by many, to see the original release versions instead of the Special Edition versions, but unfortunately the only way to watch them is via fan edits like the Despecialized versions that were mentioned, among a few other versions edited and released by fans. But you can only get those via downloads which aren’t strictly legal. The only digital versions of the originals that were officially released were Special Edition DVD extras. We never got any HD or better official releases. Fans have obtained theatrical release film reels and digitally scanned and restored them themselves, and they’re probably the best way to view the originals. But as I say, they’re not strictly legal. Some people don’t mind pirating them, but not everybody is comfortable doing so. I satisfy my own morality on the subject by buying an official physical copy and downloading the pirated original copy that I actually want to watch.

    • @Yngvarfo
      @Yngvarfo ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I do remember being annoyed that we never actually saw any spaceship taking off or land. In particular, I think the extra scene of the Millennium Falcon taking off from Mos Eisley helps the flow of the sequence. They did improve in the sequels, but I often think there is an element of elitism in the CGI bashing. You could always find traces of bluescreen artifacts and jerky stop motion as well. Regardless of the techniques used, it's all a matter of using the tools you have as well as possible.

    i saw this movie over 50 times in the theaters... when it was still just "Star Wars" ... no chapter name or number as that didn't happen until the 1981 re-release. Between 1977 and 1980. it was just "Star Wars"... a stand-alone movie with no sequels and no prequels... and an ending that was not a cliff-hanger and let the movie watcher use his or her imagination to decide what happened later. I bought the soundtrack album and pretty much wore it out by playing it incessantly on my turntable. The main title music was released as a single, and made the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Meco Menardo also released a disco/dance version of the soundtrack, and a single was made from various parts of that album, and that single made it all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Star Wars" music was everywhere in 1977 and 1978.

    I'm glad you're seeing it in release order! Discover characters, plot arcs & the universe the same way we did.
    Don't really have a favorite Star Wars movie, but it'd be a tie between Episodes 5 & 6 (treated as a 2-part episode in my mind); & Rogue One.
    Fun story: my family was really excited to go see this when it came out! My dad was the big scifi fan, & I took after him, after he had been so carefully been introducing me to his favorite authors. Mom was the only person who drove; but she enjoyed watching fantastical movies, too.
    Anyway, we were all bummed to discover the movies release date was *after* we'd be on our summer road trip! My parents both worked for the public school system in Ohio, so our vacation times lined up pretty well; so every summer we did a road trip to part of the country. We'd decide where, my mom went to AAA (travel agency) to plan the route, get it on trip tick (a manageable sort of paper road map;) & get the corresponding guide book. Road trips were adventure, back then: calling your next motel every morning from the front desk for lodging that night, guided only by how many stars it'd been rated in the AAA guidebook! No cellphones, no GPS; no apps.
    Anyway, we were in the Southwestern States when Star Wars hit theaters; & we'd had to reconcile ourselves to catching it when it hit the cheaper theaters...
    From the highway going into Santa Fe, New Mexico, we passed a neighborhood commercial district with theater... Guess what movie was on the marquee?
    After finding our motel, my dad bought the local paper from the dispenser outside the office, & we found the theater. I'd imagine my mom may have called to find out how to get there. (I was a young teen, & didn't pay attention.)
    So -- we got to watch the movie in the most beautiful neighborhood theater I've ever seen! The interior decor reflected the Hispanic influence in Santa Fe.
    Of course, considering it was dark when the movie was over, trying to find our way back to the motel was another adventure...

      That's exactly it! I want to experience it in the same order as everyone else :D Thank you for that story! I enjoyed reading it and I can just imagine how special it was seeing it in theatres with your family on the road trip! I remember road trips when I was younger and my mom and I would study the map of the new city for a while just to familiarize ourselves a bit with it.

    An interesting fact few know: When originally released in theaters the text *"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away"* was pure deep blue, not the lighter cyan blue you see in current releases. Probably changed to make it brighter and more visible, but I always felt the original deep blue I saw in my youth in the theater was much more mysterious.

    The version you watched was NOT the 1977 theatrical release. You saw the 1997 Special Edition version, which had ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) go back and add CGI special effects they couldn't do in 1977. The Special Edition version contains scenes that were deleted from the original, and includes some controversial scenes like 'Greedo shot first'. In the 1977 version, Greedo never got off a shot, Han just blasted him from under the table in the Cantina. Just some lore: you're going to find the numbers 1138 and 327 appearing throughout the films, sort of an Easter egg, so watch for them. Both have significance to George Lucas.

    1. IRL Sir Alec Guinness didn't want to play Obi Wan, He thought the entire premise was silly, but his wife talked him into taking it. The rest is history.
    2. This episode of the saga was released first because Lucas felt it was the easiest one to make and provide an outstanding product with the technology they had at the time.
    3. This movie came out way before CGI was available. The scene with Jabba the Hutt, the large critters outside the cantina and the ones being ridden by the stormtroopers are CGI and was put in later with the 25 years anniversary edition.
    4. The BEST way to watch these are in the order they were released. Keep in mind that we had to wait years between episodes. there wasn't any internet or memes like. "I am your father" as spoilers.
    5. The scene in the detention center where Han Solo ends up saying "how are you" is a goof on Harrison Ford's part. He forgot his lines. 🤣
    6. In an appearance on Johnny Carson when this came Carrie Fisher said the Chewy is a 300-year-old Wookie.

    In 1977, Star Wars was NOT the studios main summer blockbuster hit. That was to be a movie called Damnation Alley. But DA got delayed due to some problematic "sky on fire" effects so the studio put SW out so they had something in the theaters (drive in for me.) But as we now know SW was such a phenomenal hit, fans going back to see it multiple times, that when DA was released so few people went to see it (I was one who did, again at a drive-in) that it was pulled only a few weeks after release. SW continued in the theaters to the point that the film was wearing out and breaking in the projectors.

The cast would ask him about how to pronounce something, for example, was the princess' name Lee-uh or Lay-uh? And was Solo's first name Hann or Hahn? and George pretty much answered "Yes." and walked away indicating go with whatever you want. Which is why different characters say their names in slightly different ways.

    If you ever want to see the theatrical cuts of these films... Its not exactly legal... But fans have restored old film negatives, it's called "Project 4K77." They restored the whole trilogy and you can find them all online. Of course there is also the Despecialized editions where a fan painstakingly removed the additions but kept the HD quality. George Lucas also released the theatrical cuts as a bonus DVD in 2006. But the visual quality on the 06 DVD versions are terrible and probably hard to track down copies at this point. My personal favorite version of these films is the 1997 special editions. But that's only because my dad took me to see them in the theater when I was 7 so it's mostly just nostalgia. I still have my VHS copies! There are a lot of versions though! The theatrical cuts, The 1997 Special Editions, The 2004 DVD Special Editions, the 2011 Blu Ray release and the Disney+ release, all of which have subtle and not so subtle differences and changes.

      @@VerowakReacts No, they didn't start marketing for a couple of years. No 'decent' light sabers for decades. Got to play with a few 'good ones' but they're nothing like the ones we see on the show. Twice I went by myself with very few people. Then I got my friends to go - line started after we got there. Lines for 2 blocks afterwards.

    she made a good point about why we love movies, for me it's very often the soundtrack. I love the story of star wars, and the effects were amazing for the time, characters are great, but my number 1 reason for loving these movies is the music. I always come back for that.

    You cannot imagine how this swept the globe! Stars Wars mania!! I was 14
    It was a CRAZE! Star Wars was all people could talk about and then the merchandising!!!
    The theme songs were blasted over the radio as a number One hit.
    It was the turbulent 1970's...that was a very rough decade and Star Wars brought HOPE....it picked everyone up
    Just unreal....

    The line "prisoner transfer from cell block 1138" is a reference to Lucas' earlier film "THX 1138".

    Not spoilers:
    - That wide-angle shot of Mos Eisley was added in the 1997 "special edition".
    - Whether or not "Han shot first" (in the Cantina) has seen many tweaks between editions. In the original 1977 version there actually were no visible shots fired, just special FX + cut to Greedo falling onto the table, with Han holding his blaster. Many fans prefer that Han shot pre-emptively, while George Lucas prefers that Greedo tried to shoot first. (The current edition depicts them trading shots more or less simultaneously.)

    • @VerowakReacts
      @VerowakReacts  ปีที่แล้ว

      Since watching this movie, I've seen the whole who shot first, and Han shooting first makes the most sense, especially the way that Greedo shoots. Greedo missing at basically point blank range doesn't make sense, in the end Han still shot first 😂

    Empire is most fans favorite, mostly for the reason that it is the best Star Wars movie by a country mile.
    It isn't even close.
    Empire has almost become a verb: every time a show or a series has its darkest moment, it is referred to as the Empire Strikes Back of said series/movie.
    I mean, the Family Guy spoof of Empire is called Somerhing, Something, Something, Dark Side.
    LOL
    ESB is beyond brilliant.

    It helps when you realize Star Wars is King Arthur in space: A farm boy gets a magis sword from a wizard and hitches a ride with pirates to save aprincess from a black kinight in a castle with an enormous army.

    While Star Wars came out in 1977, this version made it's debut in 1997, as part of the 20th anniversary. It has newer digital effects, despite the fact that the original films had some of the best effects. Things like the size of Mos Eisley, the city they meet Han in has been increased in size and scope with more aliens and busyness around the streets. The Jabba scene (which wasn't seen in your reaction) was not included in the original. It was filmed, but the design of Jabba hadn't been finalized, and was filmed with a costumed actor.

There are some episodes on Robot Chicken that deal with Star Wars stuff among other movies & super heroes and they are a hoot. I'm an old geezer so I've seen nearly every movie in the theater first.
