      I think George kinda ruined his own series by doing the prequels the way he did.
      What used to be one of the most earth-shattering twists in pop culture film is now just...another scene. It completely flies by some reactors, compared to the impact that scene used to have.
      The prequels should've been entirely devoid of any mention of Vader at all. And we should never have learned the twins' names. That way, newcomers to the series are still in the dark about both of the OT's big reveals: Vader is Luke's father, and Luke and Leia are actually twins.

    The Luke/Leia kiss was a thing because at the time ESB was written, Luke and Leia were not intended to be siblings. There was an intended love triangle between Luke, Han, and Leia at play. Luke's actual sister was going to be introduced in Ep 6, but when Lucas decided to cut the saga short he repurposed Leia as the long lost sibling.
    So much of SW in the beginning was put together on the fly.

      So the "No, there is another" was supposed to be for somebody else, or again Leia, but she would've been just Force sensitive (Organa DNA Force sensitive alternate script), without relation to the Skywalker DNA ?

    • @razorfett147
      @razorfett147 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@akotarakz it was meant to be another character not yet introduced...not Leia. It only became Leia when Return of the Jedi was written. Lucas originally intended for the saga to run through 6 films with Luke falling to the dark side and his sister having to turn him back, but after Empire i guess he changed his mind. So he decided to wrap things up with Return of the Jedi

  • @ronfehr7899

    At the time of this movie, George Lucas had not yet determined that Luke and Leia were siblings.
    The intention was simply to be understood as an attempt to make Han jealous.
    Had you not already known about their relationship, through the prequels or just from things you overheard, it would have seemed like just an ordinary kiss.

    Yoda's ruse is a nod to a samurai film trope, called The Stranger on the Road. This is where the blade master would test the student traveling to train with him, by pretending to be someone else, before they met in person. The goal was to judge the character of the student, when they think nobody is watching.

    • @argentokaos2629
      @argentokaos2629 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Yes, that trope--- or one might just say theme--- goes way back in history in Far East traditions. Great spiritual masters (whether the warrior or the straight religious kind) used to often test prospective pupils--- by first acting like total *fools,* just to gauge those kinds of initial reactions. (To an extent--- you can even see it in the first "Karate Kid"!)

    • @GodlessScummer
      @GodlessScummer ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I often think Yoda's introduction is often overlooked in this movie. When we first see him we think that this character is just a bit of light hearted comic relief even if Yoda drops one or two hints as to his wisdom.
      "Wars not make one great" for example. But essentially we see him as a cute comedic character. Which is why when he reveals himself to be Yoda it's so great.

    The ice planet was filmed in Norway. They wanted it to look real, but this was almost a major disaster as there was a once in a decade blizzard that came during the production. The part where Luke is in the snow by himself and Han finds him, that is an actual blizzard. The OT Star Wars plot lines were put together on the fly. Think about all the re-writes and plot leaks they had to deal with...they had multiple scripts just to keep certain secret points in the story from getting out.

    Honestly, watching these movies in chronological order takes so much away from them. The confrontation between Luke and Vader is fascinating to watch, because when you remember that Anakin was one of the greatest swordsmen in the whole galaxy then you realise that he is in COMPLETE control of the fight the whole time, every step of the way he's just toying with Luke and stringing him along, maneouvering him where he needs him to go. The only time this changes is on the catwalk when Luke gets that lucky hit in, and Vafder decided that's enough of that and it's time to shut this down, so he just ends the fight in THREE DEFT MOVES, finishing with cutting off Luke's hand. Pure, brutal precision, utterly ruthless efficiency. Anakin Skywalker gone to the Dark Side indeed.

    • @VergilArcanis
      @VergilArcanis ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i find what's interesting is that he uses 2 hands when he needs to actually take the fight seriously, most opponents he uses 1 hand (mostly in later-released content). he was cautious about Luke for two reasons: luke is a novice (a danger to most accomplished swordpeople), and he didn't know if his own son would be as powerful or more so.

    R2 is the best, absolutely. The true hero...the whole story would have ended prematurely if not for something he does in just about every episode.
    Ben Burtt is a sound design god. The sounds are all his, with direction from George Lucas. Nobody can do what he did anymore...
    Outdoor Hoth scenes were filmed in Finsk, Norway. The rebels in the trench were members of their snow ski rescue team as extras.
    This is the best SW movie, overall. It establishes the nature of the force in a stronger way, providing the core for all the stories after. And so well put together despite the technology limitations of the time. Yoda lifting Luke's X-wing out of the bog is a top-tier cinematic moment.

    Something that's not obvious from the movies, is why there's a difference in power from the Snowspeeders, and the X-Wings. The Rebels had to cobble together anything they could get, from anywhere, and make it work. Snowspeeders are more like local Police ships. They can't break orbit. Their weapons are meant to be less destructive. X-Wings are fully space capable, pressurised fighters, with lasers capable of damaging OTHER armoured, shielded space capable ships. X-Wings are fully capable of breaking orbit and dog fighting in the atmosphere of a planet, to devastating effect. Every single one of those Snowspeeder crews, knew that they needed assistance to escape the planet. They went out, knowing they'd likely die, or be left behind.

  • @cyberjarl
    @cyberjarl ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Great reaction :) It was fun to watch.
    Regarding the cave scene, when Luke asks "What will I find?", Yoda answers "Only what you take with you". The cave is strong in the Dark Side of the Force and basically it shows Luke a few things:
    1. It shows him what obsesses him (his hatred for Darth Vader)
    2. After he decapitates Vader in his vision, it shows him that lashing out in hatred and anger will turn him into what he hates the most (cause him to fall to the Dark Side)
    3. It foreshadows the relation between Luke and Vader.
    Another point I wish to make : Not enough credit is given to Vader's understanding and mastery of the Force. When Luke had a vision of Han and Leia's misfortunes on Bespin, it was the future he saw.
    Vader purposefully made Han and Leia suffer, going as far as torturing Han to use them as bait to draw Luke to him. This means he knew, as a Force user, that due to their relationship, their suffering would cause a ripple in the Force that Luke would sense in the past and come to rescue them.
    Hence Obi Wan saying "It is you and your abilities the Emperor wants. That's why your friends are made to suffer."
    Vader had the mindfulness and understanding of how the Force works to plan actions that would have consequences in the past and shape the present to his designs.

    Watching this movie through your eyes was like seeing The Empire Strikes Back for the first time again.
    Vader recognized that Luke was his son during the destruction of the Death Star in a New Hope but didn't recognize his own daughter despite being in close and prolonged proximity. Twice! It was never explained why Darth Vader was blind to Leia. (The real reason was George Lucas decided at the last moment that Luke and Leia were siblings--Obi-Wan and Uncle Owen knew already that Luke was Darth Vader's son--though Lucas didn't incorporate that into the story until the last moment)
    This is an excellent example of how to launch a plot twist. In The Empire Strikes Back, there were clues such as Luke's face in Vader's severed helmet and "there is another." Vader's obsessive search for Luke Skywalker had a reason. (most of all, Lucas managed to keep the plot twist secret until the movie premiered by limiting the cast and crew who knew about the line that Vader was Luke's father--on set only Lucas and Spielberg and Hamil knew because the lines were dubbed in post-production).

    When you're organizing a _rebellion,_ the best place to be is a place the Empire is not inclined to _look._ That means you have to get good at not letting your personal _comfort_ be a priority.
    On a personal note, though, I usually tend to get along with it pretty well. Not _this_ kind of cold, though. When it's so cold that _trees_ can't even grow, it's too cold.

    I always felt that the point of watching a movie reaction channel is to see if someone loves or hates films that their audience already knows and also love or hates so I really don't understand how so many people flood the comments section telling them to not bother with this or that sequel that they happen to not like. Hopefully you'll watch the sequel trilogy too. While they're really divisive amongs fans and are far from perfect, they do have their good points and you might actually enjoy them. At the very least, it's important for everybody to make their own opinions and I would be really interested in seeing yours.

    I think you would enjoy the anime series Violet Evergarden. It is about a girl who was wounded in World War I, and given prosthetic arms and hands, and now has to learn how not to be a soldier as she also learns to process the emotions she suppressed growing up as an orphan and a child soldier. It is very tender and heartwarming, funny at times and exceptionally beautiful (it was a Netflix show and had a huge budget). If you can find it in your neck of the woods, it is well worth a watch.

    I believe the majority of viewers love TESB more than all the other star wars movies because the protagonist is han solo more than luke skywalker but the story is getting luke ready to defeat vader and the emperor so even though return of the jedi had ewoks (wookiee inverted-lucas wanted wookiees to overthrow the empire) I love the OT equally- critics didn't warm up to TESB back when I saw it in 1980

    38:34 so the significance of Vader’s width to Luke’s is because of the power difference and naturally role, as Anakin was full fledged Jedi Knight when transitioning to Sith Lord, .. Luke on the other hand although born Jedi like his sister, his force ability is unstable and limits him to use (classifying his capabilities as Padawan) .. and the force makes this known in the most basic of ways with the appearance of lightsaber blades.
