    Got a Hero 8 Black as “new old stock”.
    Dummy me thought a Media Mod is a Media Mod.
    A lot of used ones on eBay don’t clarify what you have just told us.
    You just saved me $79. Thank you!

    Well, It's tough because I want to connect an external lapel mic. But I have read very mixed reviews on the GoPro USB-C to 3.5mm adapter. In addition to the middling reviews, the adapter costs $50 and it's bulky. So on the other hand there's the media mod, which would allow me to connect a lapel mic. But I have read many reviews that state that the media mod causes the GoPro to overheat faster, and also that it's a pain to swap the battery and the SD card. Is it really that bad? I feel like this was a good review, but the reviewer skipped over the biggest negatives that people often site when reviewing this product (overheating and access to battery/SD card). I would like to know more about how much of a nuisance it is to switch the battery in the field.

      I don't own the media mod; but even without my Hero10 stuck into a media mod, it was a challenge to manage the heat issue in the daytime on hot days during a trip to the Caribbean 3 months back. I'm a newbie to the gopro, fortunately I had bought a Volta external power stick. One trick I used was to remove the internal battery, and the gopro door, and I kept turning the gopro toward our vehicle's AC vent so that cool air could blow into the gopro cavity. I eventually switched to recording with my new Galaxy S22 smart phone which had virtually no heat issue.

    Fyi the thumbscrew actually needs to be the other way! says it in the manual. Tried it like you first and it's hard to unscrew, but it's fine on the other side. I'm not sure what that dent is really for.

    The audio quality coming from the media mod's microphone is just trash. The internal mic sounds somewhat more pleasing than the media mod's. Anyone else noticing this??

    Thanks for sharing! I have the Hero 10 without the media mod. If I did, I would use it for a Sennheiser MKE 200 or 400 mic along with the ability of using a power bank at the same time. Only other concern I would have with it would be the case causing the GoPro to retain more heat than without. I.M.O., I wouldn't purchase the media mod just for it's mic alone. I've heard some wind tests which wasn't all that impressive. Thanks again, great presentation. 👍😊

    You answered your own questions which were as mine would be. I’m going to buy the Media mod. I probably won’t bother with other add-ons so this will be perfect for me. Vlogging,You call it? Just filming my cycling and holiday adventures ? not really getting into too much editing etc. It’s £80 here in U.K. I think that’s not too bad, when it’s just plug and play. Thanks for an informative vid.

    couple thing Thomas... have you tried your media mod on your gopro10 without a battery in the camera? I get a screen saying Battery Required... You're gopro will power off. Insert a battery and reconnect to your power source. If we could power the camera with the media mod without battery in the camera it would help with some of the heating issues when running the gopro10 for longer times than a single battery would provide. I have also seen where if you do have a battery in the camera and you have external power connected to the media mod that when in record mode the gopro10 stops charging. This is counterproductive as we're trying to extend the camera run times!

    I just got my Go-Pro so I am still getting use to it. I was on a cruise for eight days and they had a sale on the Hero 9 . I got that and and an accessory kit duty free and at a really good price. I have not picked any mods , but I have started looking at some additional pieces. The media mod for sure, but I am butter fingers so first I think an armor case. But after that lights, mics, and lenses.

    • @TG_Shreds
      @TG_Shreds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GoPro‘s are built to be extremely durable. I don’t think you’ll need a durable case even if you are admittedly Butterfingers.. I also would recommend just using the camera and getting familiar with it. Often times don’t need any accessories besides an extra battery and a larger SD card if you were just getting started with your GoPro

    I'll use the Media Mod (which I just bought today for the Go Pro 10, which I bought a couple of weeks ago) for a Rode Wireless Go 2 and for walking around London, from Toronto, next time I go. Even though the Go Pro has a good sound, I can isolate the Rode more with a Rode Lavalier mic in case traffic, etc., is a little too loud. Mind you, the Brits don't seem as obstreperous as us, over here. I'll alternate between that setup and a Sony a7C on a Weebill S gimbal and use a Sony ECMB1M mic, atop that. But I also want to bring a Sony RX100VA as all three are good for different reasons, and I may be there for a month.

    I was looking at the mediamod and wondering if it would be good for my setup, as I don't have any one use for either a camera or a GoPro. I bought a SmallRig frame for the Hero9 that I have, and I was left wondering how the 3.5mm stereo/USB-C adapter that GoPro sells, would actually fit onto this cage. the bottom line is, it didn't. I didn't wanna shell out another inordinate amount on a bespoke accessory, so I managed to jerry-rig a solution. the width/thickness of the adapter body is almost exactly the same width as the coldshoe mount, so I stuffed it in there and it's a VERY tight fit, but it works. now I have a solution that doesn't get in the way of a shot, allows sound flexibility with my use of Rode wireless mics, and keeps everything neat and tidy.

    Will the Media Mod protect the GoPro for mountain biking or best to ride without?

    • @TG_Shreds
      @TG_Shreds  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When you use the word ‘protect’ in your answer, I have to reply saying it won’t protect it at all… I would say that you can use it for mountain biking, but it won’t offer any protection.
      That being said, if you use it, it will give you the features I mention and still slow you to record quality audio. If you do use it for MTB, I would be sure to use the removable foam wind buff for the microphone.

    Worth it? Not for me. I tried the Media Mod with the Hero 8 but the incompatibility with filters made it a bad choice. For the Hero 10 I reverted to a Ulanzi plastic cage with filter thread (the metal ones are too heavy) The plastic cage plus mic adapter still costs less than the Media Mod. And I love easy use of ND's and circular polarizers.

    • @TG_Shreds

      TRUE.. especially in the sense of using filters. I haven't used the Ulanzi plastic cage

    • @artistjoh

      @@TG_Shreds Everyone seems to go for the metal cages as if that is premium, but the weight saving on the plastic ones is significant, which is especially important if using on a small gimbal. I also like that plastic is easy to cut and make alterations if I am trying to get creative about how I am using it :) Ulanzi G9-4 is the model that fits Hero 9 and 10. It has a 55mm filter thread.

    I owned the Media Mod for the GoPro Hero 8. Personally, I feel it defeats the purpose of a GoPro. I’ve attached a light to it (the overpriced Light Mod) and a Rode Microphone but now it was anything but portable. So now, with the Hero 10, I’ve decided to leave it naked. It’s tempting to want to transform this camera into something else but it is an action camera first. If I want a vlogging camera, I would just get something like the ZV. I just wish there was a way to attach the light to the GoPro without the media mod, as that can definitely help in travel videos, especially during the evening.

    • @TG_Shreds
      @TG_Shreds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would definitely agree with that! - I can see how the media mod bridges the gap for people who don't want to commit to a dedicated DSLR or other camera for vlogging, but ultimately a GoPro is a rugged action camera. The lines get blurred especially with the slim (subjective) difference in audio quality between the cameras mic, media mod mic and an external 3rd party microphone.

    The only reason I am looking at a media mod is because my hero10 isn't playing nicely with my production system, so I cannot use it as a USB webcam (the old crash reporter error that nobody seems to know how to fix). I checked it on a bone stock windows 10 install and I could just about getting it working, but not very impressive to be honest. So I would consider the media mod to use the HDMI out to feed one of my elgato capture cards. Such a painful waste to spend more money just to get the camera to do what it's suppose to do!

    Can you post link to that microphone you are to compare the media mod VA external mic. It seems pretty good and I am willing to consider buying it.
    Or would you recommend a different mic than the one you are using? I plan on doing a lot outside and could experience high wind and loud noises.
    I bought the media mod for that but I am totally fine with using it with something else or totally scrapping it for something else.
    Any recommendations is highly appreciated.

      Do you think the 2nd one would work well on a rifle? I plan on recording and streaming my training at the range for educational and entertainment purposes.
      So looking for a good mic that's also lightweight. The media mod looks like a decent option since it's ultra small and light and has decent audio. (any added weight makes aiming magnitudes hard.) So I would like a good mic so it's pleasant to watch/listen to but excessive weight is going to kill me lol 😆 😅.
      Do you know how much both those weigh?
      Do you think one would be drastically better than the other with recording audio on top of a rifle shooting? I know it's a drastic/extreme situation that has 50db to 140+ dB to record 🤣

    • @TG_Shreds
      @TG_Shreds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DCMAKER133 I’m not sure how much they weigh, but I’m sure it’s Googleable. If you are shooting guns, then I would recommend the cheaper variant: the more expensive microphones usually pick up deeper/lower frequencies with higher fidelity. … louder shrill noises would require less low range fidelity

    what ND filter works with the media mod?

    • @TG_Shreds
      @TG_Shreds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      have personally used the Polar Pro filters for Hero10 and they do not interfere with the Media Mod. I haven't used any others, but I can say that the Media Mod dosnt conflict with removing and replacing the stock Lens so as long as an aftermarket lens is too much extra bulk, then I would say you are good to go with other brands of ND filters

    Hello sorry to bother you here. I am Linda from the Promotion Team of HSU, a brand that focuses on action camera accessories. Is there any chance that you would like to try our GoPro wind reduction foam? Compared with media mod, wind reduction foam is more affordable and can reduce most of the wind noise for daily use.

      @@gutenbird ok awesome! I agree.. the mounting ecosystem and ability to swap between mounts quickly is a big reason GoPro has had continued success.. they market their cameras as the most versatile camera.. Make sure you get the correct media mod for your camera… the original media mod is smaller and designed specifically for the Hero8… the one that GoPro currently sells on their website is designed for the Hero9 and Hero10 camera interchangeably.

      Yes, you take the GoPro's side door off completely to have the Media MOD slide over the camera and connect to the USB-C port. in doing this, the camera looses its waterproof capabilities.

    I bought a Media Mod Hero10/Hero9, as listed on Ebay. I got it today, and my Hero 10 sill not fit in it at all. It's too small for the Hero10. It was listed as new, and when I got it today in the mail, the box was sealed with the retail round sticker. But when I opened it, there was no Mic attachment, no instruction booklet, and the thing is scuffed up. Then when I tried to put my Hero 10 in it, but it is way too small. So I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong, of if someone stuck a different media mod in the box. Like, is the Hero 8 media mod smaller than the Hero 9/10 one? And I just noticed that the rubber flap that goes over the outputs is missing.

      I cannot comment on exactly what is going wrong in your situation but if I had to guess from my experience you were using the correct media mod, but as you are sliding the camera into the media mod you may need to gently wiggle the camera into place so that the USB-C port finds its match and becomes seated correctly… if you’re having issues don’t force it. Great video review on the media mod. Realistically, media mod mic is really disappointed. I already checked some reviews from other youtubers, I still think the media mod mic is really average, I even prefer the audio quality straight from cam. However, the ability to add an external mic and eventually a ext light on the gopro is a real benefit getting media mod.
    The audio on the hero 10/media mod sounds like night and day compared to the audio I get from my gopro 7.
