Great review Motoman! I've had the P440e autobiography for 2 months now and It's been incredible. My running average is over 130mpg with my weekly commute being EV only. One thing I'd add is that the transition from EV->Gas and vice versa is seamless, no shuddering or shaking at all. I have the same exterior color with the light cloud interior like your first edition which i think is the perfect combination. The semi-aniline leather is def a step above anything I saw in EQS, GLE, or X5.
For those stating that at the price point of the RRS autobiography, might as well go with the full range rover, that was true for 2023. Things have changed drastically for 2024. 1. The P440e on both is now the P550e with a larger motor (but same battery size). 2. The price point for both has increased significantly; the RRS autobiography now starts at 118k, not 104k and the RR P550e starts at 141k, not 106k. 3. The interior of both have changed as well, all HVAC and center console controls have been moved to the touchscreen. I'm glad I went with the 2023. I'll take the slightly less powerful motor for a lower price point and more physical controls.

Great to know as I am considering trading my defender for the plug in RR sport. How often does the motor kick in as I hear you have to baby the pedal to stay in EV mode. I’m not a fast driver but I definitely accelerate briskly from stand stills.

@@Reko_89 I feel there may have been some software updates compared to the press vehicles motoman and other reviewers drove. My personal experience is that EV mode has quicker pick up to 35mph vs hybrid where it trails off. I forced my foot once to see where the kick down area was and was surprised i basically had to mash the pedal to the floor to get the gas engine on. I think you'd be fine.

Tips like the vegan interior scuffing and insight about why can’t these vehicles recharge themselves are why watching MotoMan is worth my time.

Mazda CX-90 PHEV can recharge itself from gas engine. It works well on highway at constant speed, not so much in city stop and go.

In Europe you could get the P440e in any spec, but not as Autobiography. On the other hand, if you wanted the Autobiography, you could only get it as P510e which got the same electric parts but a higher tune of the six-in-line. In the meantime LR moved on to the P460e and P550e, which mainly get more electric oomph (200 hp vs 140 hp, which is a useful upgrade especially for highway use), but same story. Sadly enough, this recent 'engine upgrade' also comes with a reworked center console which removed *all* the (very useful) buttons (climate control, hybrid/EV/save switch, radio volume, drive mode select) which is a very (very) bad move.
Also in Europe, Autobiography also always comes with (and is the only way to get) what was initially called the "Stormer Handling Pack" of active anti-roll bars (which are indeed very, very good - they keep a 2.7 ton car as roll-free as a sports sedan) and rear-wheel steering (amazing; turns a huge SUV into a hatchback). The Stormer pack was offered on the lower trims as well at launch, but never actually went on sale - marketing got ahead of themselves and LR quickly realised they barely had enough of these parts to even spec the Range Rover (which always gets both of these features) and the RRS Autobiography models.
Anyway, in Europe what it boils down to is that in the RRS P510e/550e, you basically get a cut-price full Range Rover. Like-for-like in same spec it's a huge 40.000 EUR difference. It has exactly the same engine, same wheelbase, same interior space, same handling technology (I believe the RRS even has even more tricked out dual-stage dampers), same interior quality (arguably in a better design), same infotainment, same comfort (excellent on even 23" as the roll bars can detach on the straight). Looks worse from the back but better from the front. Easy choice!
In most countries the PHEVs are the only one people are buying because of tax breaks. But as proven by MotoMan, far from being a compromise, they are actually the best engines on offer. The P510e has torque and power like a V8, but with superb refinement either with engine off (EV mode - fully silent gliding in town) or on (that six-in-line is just as sweet as any BMW's).

Always super informative automotive reviews by Motoman. Charging extra for having the car only “one”color is insulting to their clients. Charging extra for synthetic interior materials versus genuine leather: ditto.

The Autobiography comes standard with the upgraded semi-aniline leather. I can't imagine subbing that out for what appears to be neoprene - particularly if it ends up being MORE maintenance than leather as you point out. The Sport makes sense under $100k - but if I'm going well into the 6 figures for a 6000 lb (ie: not so sporty) Range Rover, I'm opting for the actual Range Rover.

I purchased a 2023 Range Rover Sport Autobiography P440e on September 1, 2023 in Varesine Blue with Caraway interior; I absolutely love it. You cannot tell when it switches between electric and gas. I purchased it in Pittsburgh, PA and drove it home with my bother to Houston; approximately 1,600 miles. It was fully charged when we picked it up and got an additional 27 miles plugged in at a hotel one night on a 110volt plug. Other than that, it was in gas mode. I achieved a little over 26 MPG over the trip; pretty incredible for a 6,000 lb SUV. When I take it to work, the round trip is 60 miles and it can complete the trip in full electric mode as long as I don't go over 77 miles per hour. It has amazing performance as well. The last time I looked, it was getting 87 miles per gallon as those trips are mostly to the office and back. So the stated range when fully charged at 60 miles and is true for me; way to go Range Rover. The build quality and the materials used in the Autobiography are spot on as well. The ride and drive of this SUV is like a big luxury vehicle. Even with the optional 23" rims, it rides so smooth and compliant; just awesome! It reminds me of my 1998 S420. That was an amazing vehicle; you could tell it was more hand build. I have had three (3) other S Class since that one (2006, 2013 and 2018) and none felt as detailed as that one did. All were great but that one was "SPECIAL". So if you do get one, the Autobiography is the one to go with due to the electric hybrid engine and the special interior details.

I had the previous generation PHEV sport as my company car, for me the choice to go PHEV was purely the fact that its tax was around £100 per month (car was provided by my employer) which the same tax on the 6 cylinder diesel was around £700 a month, and if i remember correctly the non SVR V8 was just under £900. For me, the PHEV was literally 9 times cheaper than the V8, since the car was provided to me for free. I now just rent cars through Sixt for all business driving, which means i pay absolutely nothing for business travel anymore, although i most commonly get the 530e, so still in a hybrid

I owned a big body rover P440 E for seven months now. In that time. I don’t think I have filled the tank three times with most of my driving under 25 miles a day. We are averaging close to 60 miles on a charge Granted i live in South Florida, so the weather is warmer so range is most likely enhanced, I was lucky and able to get a non-autobiography in 2023. They’ve since changed it to a P550 for 2024 only available in autobiography for an additional $25,000. so far, this is my fifth and best rover ever.

@@MotoManTV I can attest. Coming out of a 21’ M550i, I wanted to test the waters of living with an electric vehicle without fully committing. 1,800 miles in without visiting a gas station is quite a departure from the 16mpg’s of my previous V8. (I must say you will be surprised as I was at the power and torque of this daily commuter!) In any case, keep up the great work! I will be looking forward to watching and liking your review. Cheers

What does the word "scuff" mean concerning the interior? Normally that would imply permanent damage but you seem to be saying it can be cleaned. Which is it? Big negative points to JLR for charging extra for a non-animal interior material. But I guess that fits the pattern of them ripping off RR buyers with the optional extra prices.

The only problem with all these larger faster electric cars and plug in hybrids is the miles per Kw efficiencies. The electricity may be cheaper but they’re generally not efficient.

  • @firefox39693
    @firefox39693 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I was thinking the exact same thing you mentioned about having a charge mode for plug-in hybrids, and using that no and off to get more EV-only use. I totally agree with you on that.
Plug-in hybrids are flat-out not a solution to eliminating CO2 emissions from cars and trucks. EVs do that, when charged with renewables and nuclear.
I don't agree a commitment to electrification is unrealistic.
As a car guy, but a massive environmentalist, I think there is room for carbon-capture offsets credits for people like yourself who really just want ICEs, and for hard-t--abait industries.

I’d have to question anyone who would charge the battery from the gas engine. There is a ton of loss and you’d take more than 50 miles of gas range to charge the battery to then drive less miles than it took to charge it. And generally the best time to use EV mode anyways would be when the car wants to do it automatically city driving to get to the highway and then when you get to your destination from the highway to your final arrival point cruising on the highway the generally less efficient for EV than city

Not impressed by the charging by plug or while driving. Also having to pay for the standard items (up top paint or interior material) while the unfitted options come at no cost is puzzling to say the very least. With that logic however the contrasting interior should come a no charge…correct❓ Is it even an option on this Autobiography❓😏 15:02

Some of us bought EV’s not because we are “rich tree huggers,” but because we are people of average means, who prioritize NOT funding our “friends” in OPEC. If one doesn’t mind funding The Saudi’s, and such, then might I suggest a brief Google search as to why one might want to reconsider. One last thing… one can lease, or buy a 300+ mile range EV for less than a well equipped Camry. They are not just for the “rich” anymore.
