I grew up in SCV from 1976 to 2011. Drove by the old oil refinery and the old Dukes of Hazard junk yard about everyday for years on the 14. I never knew the Beals cut was even there for years. I visited a few times over the years.Amazing all the history in such a small area right around that spot. All the iterations of the freeway including after the 2 big quakes. Sylmar and Northridge quakes. Melody ranch, oak of the golden dream etc. I still remember the Signal newspaper treasure hunts they used to do and frontier days rodeos. I miss riding my dirt bike right out of the garage into the hills in canyon country.Good times. Really enjoyed the video with the historical footage added. Obviously took some time to do all that.Thank you.

Thanks for sharing your history there in SCV, David. I have lot of great memories too. I forget if I mentioned it in the video, but I spent my first 14 years in Saugus. All those memories you have are similar to mine. I've pretty much been in the SFV since coming out here and I still miss the small town feel of living up Bouquet Canyon, although that small town feel is now gone. SCV is still a great place, but I like the "Valley" too.
Thank you taking the time and sharing you appreciation for my efforts. This is still one of my favorite videos. ;)

Thanks. I grew up in SCV. I’m in ash fork az and beales rd is just north of us here. I went to Tom mix memorial down by Florence. A high school sweetheart worked at hart mansion and land when we were in highschool. Love the old history. You did well sharing facts.

That's awesome! Yeah, I grew up in Saugus and came to the Valley when I was 14. I really love the old history here too. I appreciate the feedback on this one. It was totally unplanned and it took some time researching and gathering footage. A few times I almost gave up on the video. Comments like this really make me happy a toughed it out.

I loved that❣️ (Valencia homeowner 1978 to present) Thanks for filming this for us. I have driven through that portion of Sierra Highway more than a thousand times during my commute to work and back. (It always seemed quicker than the 14.) But all this time, I thought that Beale's Cut was actually on Sierra Highway and was eventually widened. I thought I was driving through a piece of history.😂 Surprised to learn that Beale's Cut is actually in a different spot.

You're welcome and I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing your history too. And hey, even though you're not driving through the Cut, I'm sure you're still touching road where wagon wheels once touched.
I still drive by there often enough myself. I love hiking up East Canyon. Every time I drive by the Cut I think back to my childhood and all the neat history we have coming out of our little piece of LA County. 😁

Fantastic video, man! I've always wanted to visit Beales Cut, but I'm now past my prime, and I'd be nervous about the rattlers! Your video is the next best thing. I'm a history buff and a classic movie fan, so this would be like a pilgrimage to me. Its still debated today whether Tom Mix actually jumped the cut, or if it was a stunt double, or even animation. Like you said we'll probably never know. Awesome that John Ford used it so many times! Weird to see a stagecoach go through the cut in his film of the same name, just like it had been used 50 years earlier! Keep up the good work, and hopefully Newhall can get its act together and preserve this historical site!

    • @ColemanOutdoors

Oh that is so awesome. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you so much. Sorry for the delayed response too.
If you want to go check out the Cut, let me know. The snakes and weeds can be avoided if you walk in from the northeast side. That's where I exited and there weren't any weeds!! Let me know and we can meet and I'll walk lead the way.
That would be awesome if Newhall fixed it, although I suspect it would cost a ton of money and the local tax payers might object. Fingers cross some bazillionare that loves history will make a massive donation someday. ;)

Thanks for letting me know that you enjoyed the video. This was one of those things I had no plan on doing, but once I started researching I thought, this is a story I need to tell.
And for what it's worth, the history says, the jump seen was an animation. The horse falling in with the man and boy though, that was clearly real. Hopefully it wasn't too far a fall on some set somewhere. Thankfully there are now laws requiring animal safety in films.
      Thanks again!

The first horse falling was a fake horse in King Vidors Sky Pilot, but the second one sure looks like a real horse. There were no safety regulations in those days and many animals were sacrificed for a good scene, especially in the silent era!

Rick Daly says ; That was great ! Your so lucky to live around there , i moved away after the Quake of 71 , born in Sylmar in 52 , those hills are in my blood also , but the price of the old homes i was raised around are now over half mill , I can't tell you how much i miss the 50's / 60's in that area ! and it will never be back again . Lets hope the Los Angeles Government and Land Developers don't start with there Condo's at Beales Cut ! They've destroyed so much already it's disgusting !

Thanks so much, Rick! Yeah, my dad has said the same thing about that era of LA. When I think about it, he lived here more that 3/4 of his life so I guess he'd know right? I'm the last of 6 kids and 2 sets of parents left in California. Everyone is either in Utah, Nevada or Washington. I feel lucky to be here and love the state, but it does pain me as well to see how much it has changed in my short 48 years. We are so rich in beautiful places and history and I'd hate to leave it, but I think at some point I'll follow my kids in my retirement. I don't know how anyone affords to live here, but we find a way. Clearly "mountains" are my favorite place, so we've got plenty of options is the Western states. Gosh....I don't think I could live in a flat state. Fingers crossed developers don't ruin too much of the history around here, that'd be a shame. Thanks gain, Rick!!

Christinadaly...what the city of Chatsworth did to the garden of the gods area by the Iverson Ranch is criminal. They built houses and condos, leaving a few leftover rocks for old times sake. This was where D.W. Griffith, Buster Keaton,John Ford, and hundreds of films and b movie western were filmed. Makes me sick to my stomach to see what they've done to it! At least we still have the old movies!

@@f.w.2054 In my opinion , the entire destruction of the land is on the backs of Subdivision Developers , and the Building Departments of every county that's run by State mandate's given themselves authority to over ride the peoples vote ! Santa Clarita / Newhall prime example ! Subdivisions were the greatest mistake ever devised .
