- Meet Lee Pera, an illustrious tiny house community builder and geographer in Washington DC. She built her charming 18’ tiny house on wheels, in part, as a creative outlet to bring people together while exploring the meaning of home. The outcome: Boneyard Studios, the first of its’ kind urban tiny house community showcase (2012-2014)-the spirit and mission continue through Lee’s empowering work. She shares how both her community development projects and tiny home have evolved over time. See links below to learn more and to join her local tiny house Meetup.
When we met up with Lee, her tiny home was parked in a DC backyard. We love how she achieved very efficient space utilization, with no built-in furniture, which allowed her to rearrange the layout multiple times to better suit her needs. Lee's THOW feels airy, without skimping on storage space including a sizeable book collection.
During our visit, Lee was preparing to move to behind her newly purchased traditional house, an opportunity to build a new community. Through her new project Kotierra.org, she is working on THOW zoning resources to help others share and learn what’s happening around the country. As founding members of Boneyard Studios, Lee and Jay Austin, brought significant awareness to tiny housing with local city leaders, nationwide press and at HUD, co-host of the Innovative Housing Showcase. Jay was tragically killed last year. This video is dedicated to his memory.

Big obstacle is the outmoded zoning and planning laws still in place.
All properties should be sized to allow the construction of a personal tiny house. Just think, you could start saving when your first born is a year old, to save $ for your child's home away from home. When you choose to build it will be a family affair. Teaching important skills and learning craftmanship and design, endurance and the will to complete the task at hand. Saving money, he could have an off campus living quarters and travel to any job he might want with the home, free from perhaps a mortgage or taxes. One could discover and explore their country and test the limits of adventure with a tiny house and a vehicle. What fun it could be!

Ahh happy to hear it! Our goal is now to complete this in the next year. We're waiting to film a couple exciting happenings, like the opening of Lake Dallas Tiny Home Village.

Dangnabbit.. I wish I were done with my build.. I'm only an hour away from DC.. Still waiting for my artificial grass with putting green 🤗 ..i haven't started the inside yet. But G&B's has a cubic grizzly woodburning stove and a 8x12 skylight... sort of 🤣🤣
beautiful house design :) but i have one question.. you bought a piece of land , but you had problems with autorities telling you that the tiny home can't be placed on the land you bought ..? i am sorry maybe you said in the video but english is not my language so maybe i didn't notice :) great home !

She built it herself. Well, she purchased a shell built by another DIYer and finished it out and later renovated.

I think this is fantastic the only problem is I do not want to live that freaking close to people that looks like it's within 10 feet of somebody else's window so that I can hear them fart or burp in the next house or I'm stuck listening to their music or hear their baby cry or hear them cough or smell their cigarette smoke why can't people make RV parks for tiny houses but give them a quarter of an acre will not give you know you buy it or you rent it but what is the use of living right next door to someone I might as well get an apartment because at least with an apartment I would have maybe a little more privacy than to look out my window to see right into somebody else's window that's ten feet away I love the tiny house I do I love it but I do not plan on living that close to people
Love tiny houses, and I really appreciate the diversity in housing options they bring to the table, but I feel that using this house in particular to advocate for legalizing THOW zoning will be counter productive. I'm sorry to say it, but the house and the area around the house look rather run down and cluttered with what looks like trash or building materials. To an average home owner, this is the exact outcome they hope to avoid. Would love to see a follow up once the maintenance is finished on the house and the area around it is spruced up.
@activatedcharcoal This video was taken as I was getting ready to move my house which is why everything was outside! I too wish they would not have filmed so much outside, but they were only in town one afternoon.
