  • In this video, Dr Sanjay Gupta discusses what it means to have low BP and advises people who worry about their BP not to worry about mere numbers without understanding what they actually mean. My name is Sanjay Gupta, I am consultant in Cardiology and my website is www.yorkcardiology.co.uk

Thank you Dr. Gupta. For the past 15 months, I've been eating a 100% whole food, plant based diet, with no added salt, sugar, oil plus no meat, chicken, fish or dairy. My diastolic readings have been "periodically" dropping below 60. Listened to your video.....added a very small amount of salt to a glass of water.....drank it down and my diastolic reading went up to 64 from the prior reading one hour ago of 55. Thank you for such an easy to do action item!!! I'll keep testing it out. Much appreciated!!!

Dude, you just helped my panic attack. My mother’s blood pressure has been 85-89/53-60 all day. She had a dr app today and he told her to eat salt and drink water. But she usually has high blood pressure and takes meds for it so I was freaking out. I’ve literally been googling for the past 3 hours giving myself anxiety and it’s 2am and i have work in the morning. I was afraid to let her go to sleep, i know she is dehydrated, so she’s been drinking lots of water plus i had her eat some salty soup but i was still worried .... thank you.

My husband has congestive heart failure. His cardiologist has been caring for him since 2013. This summer his blood pressure started running at about 90 over 60. His cardiologist said he's fine. Today he had minor knee surgery because he had an infected bursa over his knee cap. Infection began on Saturday and the surgery was today on Tuesday. They began treating his Infection yesterday (Monday). So, today after surgery his blood pressure began dropping. At one point it was 60 over 22. After I refused to take him home when his bp started dipping at like 81 over 50, they began looking for a hospitalist to sew him. I realized he hadn't urinated since 10:30 a m., and it was past 6pm. The nurses didn't seem to think that was important. His hands had become very cold. His appetite isn't very good. I pushed to keep him there and get his bp figured out. Thank God I did. At its lowest it was 45 over 22. He became fussy and difficult. He is in the ICU. They are giving him meds to raise his bp and took away most of his heart meds that keep his bp low. They're concerned that letting his bp stay low too long can damage his organs. Thank you for the great video and helping me understand why he wasn't urinating today.

Oh my goodness, this was such a refreshing video. Thank you so much for putting my mind at ease. My blood pressure is usually 85/58 to 101/60. I am not obese or overweight and petite in size. I am constantly researching and learning new things, a voracious reader and a yoga instructor. My brain is very sharp and alert. There was only one incident that caused concern was when I was at Mexico City airport that I felt dizzy, disoriented and went to the floor. The paramedic said that the elevation of MC which is 7000 above sea level and my low blood pressure (which was 89/58), could have caused the incident. When I returned to my home country in North America, my doctor did some tests of my heart, which were all normal. Since then I have not had any other incident and take my BP on a regular basis with a home device. Thank you again Doctor Gupta, this information from a cardiologist is what I have been waiting for, I have subscribed!

Thanks Sanjay. I had Afib today and was taken by ambulance to hospital for 8 hours. I had my heart restarted by shock to get back to a sinus rythm. I go home and later that evening my pressure went down to 45 BPM. I have no other medical conditions but am overweight and under stress from work. Your advise about fluids, salt and and not being overly caution/ cavalier about the numbers saved me a midnight trip to the hospital again. I will keep listening and enjoy your video's.

I have to take two different pills to keep my bp in check. Four days ago, I started to feel dizzy. When I found out my readings were 96/57 for two days, I stopped taking my medication. This afternoon I watched this video and followed the doctor’s advice to take in some salt. I drank a glass of warm water with one tsp of salt (pink Himalayas salt). Three hours later, my bp is back to normal at 125/68. Thanks Doc.

My nurse told me that I must just be really physically fit and that my blood pressure is actually an indicator that my heart is functioning at an especially good rate because I’m so physically fit. She said it was a good thing but I still was paranoid and had to check it out lol most things online are pretty scary about low blood pressure. This video helped a little bit

Sanjay, thank you for all this information. I always as a Nurse explained the numbers are just numbers. Also teach them to drink fluids to maintain input /output at a balance level. (Equilibrium/homeostasis etc). I found it really frustrating that the nurses and the Drs don't explain these basic information. I am a retired nurse and still provide this basic information to everyone in my Counselling/health promotion work.
Yes, salt, Magnesium etc taboo subjects here in the Uk. Lit
The knowledge is dangerous I guess.
Your videos are super and I keep sharing them to increasing everyone's knowledge on health and self care.
I am sure you also seen Dr Hegde's work. Your work reminds me of Dr Hegde's mentality. Keep up with these brilliant videos as the world need great young Drs like you.

Samir C. Cat exactly the same experience. I also had a doctor laughing at me when I came for help with constant dizziness. This is a problem I’ve had for years which had recently worsened and I ended up in the hospital. But the a&e diagnosis seemed to be the best joke my gp had heard for a while. Feeling helpless and not knowing what to do - I find myself here trying to find anything that could help

Thank you for this very informative video Dr Sanjay Gupta. I have one question though and would really appreciate some advice.
I have low blood pressure myself. My Systolic is usually around normal levels Usualy around 110 - 120. But what is worrying me is that my diastolic is always very low, usually around 40. So often my blood pressure is 120/40, that is a pulse pressure of 80. The gap in between this numbers seems rather large? Is this something to be concerned about? My GP never seems concerned but my blood pressure is always higher when in the doctors office so its a struggle to proof to them how low it really is.
Just to add I am male, physically active, in my late twenties. I do get a little light headed now and then when playing sports of lifting weights but nothing major, I have never passed out. I have a low resting heart rate of around 45 BPM. I wouldn't say that is because I am super fit but more my heart rate has always been slow, this is also the case with my brother but he doesn't seem to have the low blood pressure issue I have. I would really appreciate your advice on this, thanks.

Thank you for the clear explanation. I have been recently diagnosed with DCM with an EF of 20% and the medication is causing my already low blood pressure to drop even lower. I do get lightheaded occasionally and I get worried. I will try to add just a little salt to my diet, as I hardly have any, except what is in foods that I buy in packets. I'm monitoring my BP every day.

It's actually funny because high blood pressure runs in my family and I went in for a checkup today almost positive I was going to have high blood pressure. I also eat way too much salt which was another reason I was worried about it too. He didn't tell me the exact numbers but I was surprised when he said it was quiet low so that's why I'm here doing research.

Thank you Dr Sanjay, very insightful. I have had a couple of blackouts through the years, generally when I get out of bed in the middle of the night, had one last night, and have the bruises here and there this morning. I run about 30km per week, been eating alot healthier lately, bloods all good, but very little salt in my diet, and coming into summer here in NZ, and I can lose 1.5 litres on a 8 to 10 km run, all points to being low in both fluid and salt. Thanks again, you are a blessing to so many. Take care, Merry Christmas. Ross, Nz

As a very active person I lose lots of fluids during exercise and other recreational activities, thus irregularly becoming unusually tired, as a result of low blood pressure. I understand the cause and remedy = increase fluid & salt intake (Considering that there is no other problem). Thanks Dr!

Thank you so much! Your explanation was the only one that made sense out of a myriad of videos. In my situation my blood pressure is sometimes 95 over 64. I often feel really tired and light headed when my blood pressure is lower. I was also diagnosed with PVC (premature ventricular contraction) is that something to worry about?
My doctor wasn't overly concerned and she said to keep track of my symptoms of my heart beat starts racing. I feel that I get more anxious when that happens and I tend to worry.
