Our Finnish Indian parents meet for first time! - A fun week with family in Jaipur

- It's been almost 5 years since Vinod and I are together but our parents never had a chance to meet or even speak to each other! After our marriage last October, my mother's plans to visit India from Finland were cancelled because of the pandemic. Since Vinod's whole family was in Jaipur, we used this opportunity to make the families meet and talk to each other. It was an emotional meeting as our parents are about to become first time grandparents!
This was also our last week in Jaipur, before we flew with Vinod's parents to our home in Kerala. After returning from our Haryana trip there was so much work to do. But we also had so much fun when Vinod's sister Sangeeta visited us. I also got to meet my friend Ellie in a cute cafe in Jaipur. i hope you enjoy the vlog :)

I was first like wait what Haryanvi accent, to me it sounds like most Indian people when they speak English. But then vinod also said that nope, it is clearly a Haryanvi accent 😂👌

It's because of fear of foreigners or Whites in general. Not less than a century ago, our forefathers were ruled by the British and were forced to address Whites as "Sir" and "Madam". I hope this habit goes away. Hello from Hyderabad.🙂

We married in Sri Lanka and I studied my masters in Norway .i got a well paid and well reputed job in SL and because of that I thought of living here in SL for sometimes .He is in Norway nowadays.Our plans got interrupted with Covid 😭but just being optimistic.your husbands family reminds me my family. That’s nice you met a SL person 🙂🙂

Yes I’m very grateful for the help especially now that we’re back to Kerala, because I wouldnt have been able to manage anything alone here for many weeks now! The heat is really wearing me out 🥵 i’m happy that now i’m able to focus on the easier digital work laying down on the sofa, even though must say some days even that’s too much 🤯😁

My parents did the best they knew and could 🥰 also, my mom has learned to express her emotions in a better way throughout the years, though she has always been a very kind person

Poor mommy was very tired after the trip but still was working hard in the kitchen, Dad was cute and helping in all household work like washing clothes etc. The secret of a happy family lies there. I agree, everyone does their best and what they’re good at for themselves and each other 🥰 and sometimes when one is utterly exhausted (like I am with the pregnancy) they also help out and take on her share too 😁

Oh that's so interesting! To my understanding these wouldn't really be used (almost) at all by native Indian people :)
Yeah most of us (new generation) are English medium educated so we are used to the good mornings n evenings now and because of us our parents too got comfortable with it but the grandparents’ generation is different. At least in my family, even my most western educated (studied and travelled in Europe) grandparents are all for suprabhat and shubhratri.
Whenever I’ll have kids or nieces and nephews I’ll teach them this too. It’s very soothing to the ears. I have an American pen pal (more like on social media) and I have taught him these worlds when we started talking and he always wishes me like that along with an occasional hello.
I would be great if the new generation can bring back a little bit of the old but beautiful salutations in conversational language.

It must be all the years of training 😁 what i can say based on my experience and knowledge, it’s about fresh dough that has just the right amount of water and good atta and then the roti shouldnt be rolled too thin before putting it on the tawa 😊 My rotis puff nicely too, but mommy’s are just next level 😍

Hi Johanna, Lovely to see your families meet :) I could totally relate to the 'good evening' translation scenario. I was asked in my son's 'päiväkoti' here what would I say for 'hyvää viikonloppua' in my mother tongue. And it felt really odd to say 'well, we don't really say such things'.

Haha, I can imagine! The very first things I learned to say in Hindi were things like 'thank you', 'i love you' and 'good morning' AND VINOD LAUGHED AT ME EVERYTIME that I proudly started using these in my speech :D

I think especially in Indian families, many daughter-in-loves already have this fear of the MIL when they enter a new family, because it's so common that respect doesn't go both ways and the daughter-in-law is expected to do all the housework and basically do things as the mother says. Which is really sad if many girls don't give the relationship a proper chance because of that! :( I love sharing my things and learning from Vinod's mom. If we shared a language, she probably would be one of my best friends :) But that's also because she is also so welcoming and accepting of me
