This is what I like to call "The exact moment FFXIV becomes FFXIV". Seriously, everything before this moment feels like the prologue, and the moment this fight is over, the training breaks are off and the game just GOES. The slow pace from ARR and the patch quests vanishes the exact moment diamond dust shatters.
One of the reasons I love this game. You know the idea for the drastic music change during the fight started with the sentence "Hey you know what would be cool..."
That's one of the things that makes this game so good. You can tell multiple times throughout the game the Devs just did what they though was cool as fuck. Like most MMOs wouldn't interrupt the flow of an entire fight for a music transition but fuck it, it's way cooler wit the interruption.
This was AMAZING back when it first happened. None of the fights had this dramatic of a change. Titan had the gradual build up, but it was all the same style and just got harder as it went on. The other fights had great music (Garuda and Ramuh are tremendous), but this one took it one step further and *completely changed style* between phases.
I love the progression in the lyrics from "Fragile creatures, we are taught to fear the Reaper , ever running, we are dead before we meet Her" to "Fearless creatures, we all learn to fight the Reaper , can't defeat Her, so instead I'll have to be Her", it's some top tier stuff
It was at this point during the fight that I was completely, 100% sold on critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV with an EXPANDED FREE TRIAL which you can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award winning Heavensward Expansion up to level 60 for FREE with no restrictions on playtime. I'm currently only slightly post ARR and I can't wait to see what else is in store for me.
Keep going until Heavensward, and you might consider to buy the full game after that because the story were getting crispy. Especially on Shadowbringer *chef's kiss*
Wait till you get to the Warring Triad trials (Heavensward "optional" ones (with lore)), and honestly most of all the other trials and fights in the game. The composition is stellar, and so is the story.
I disagree with one thing here - this isn't Shiva's theme, in the first phase we fought Shiva, in the second Ysayle realised we're not dying, started losing her shit and it's her theme with her emotions. I mean, perfectly suits her, a member of people abandoned by Ishgard, leader of a failing rebel movement, losing every time she used Shiva's power and always afraid until going through a mental breakdown once her notion of being reborn Shiva was laughed off her entire life was an escape of her inadequacy and fears only to go all guns blazing, saving WoL and scions from Imperial warship in an act of self-sacrifice, embracing who she was and attempting to actually fix her mistakes as herself, not Shiva.
Square had no reason to go so hard on a mid expansion boss battle and I love them for it. The transition into the song after Shiva using diamond dust on the party is one of the best moments in the story to this point.
@@jacobsiron6929 I had to step away from the game not long after this point due to financial reasons. Probably because she is the only one of the ARR (and post-ARR, as her fight is technically in between ARR and HW) Primals who is given proper screentime. The others are mostly just "their followers are doing something again, go and beat up their primal" and then a boss fight. "Lady Iceheart" actually has personality and a plot arc. But after her, some of the bosses start having more personality and/or a more direct connection to the plot. If there is one thing I admire about japanese media is the female empowerment aspect, it is so naturally woven in their narratives that one cannot deny the strength of all these female characters that ultimately make the story as great as it could ever be.
Yeah, that's why her death pains me the most. For all what's worth with all the revelations we've gotten on Shb regarding Ascian lore, she had a crystal just like us during ARR and HW and possibly as well as the other Ascians from the Convocation of XIV, had the echo which further proves and cemented her as a sundered Ascian just like us, while her fight was misguided due to her not knowing the full picture, she fought for the good of her people so they won't be continously hunted by the Holy See when they were branded as heretics which mirrors our plight when we were betrayed at the end of ARR among other elements that made her an important character in the story. Putting it bluntly, if certain aspects of her life had been different, she could have been a WoL or one of our allies like Kryle, Mikoto and the likes. It hurts that she died but if there's a silver lining, since she was most likely sundered, any of the surviving shards has been rejoined eight times which also coincides with us and thanks to the Eden raids and Mitron, we now know that sundered Ascians can reform from the remaining shards so if by devs grace she isn't considered a normal Ascian and she is giving any of the reminding seats of the convocation as there are still sundered convocation Ascians whose identities aren't known to us, she could come back. I know that this might be wishful thinking but while it's hard to know if she will ever get back, her song oddly enough now has some elements that are being added to Endwalker like the Reaper and stuff and the raid will focus on Ascians so maybe can we keep hope alive?
@@gwagner1380 Tbh, I doubt she's coming back; we don't have a soul crystal of her memories or the ability to form an Ascian Prime with another shard of her, and even if we did it was kind of a running theme in Shadowbringers with characters like Ryne and Gaia that it would be wrong to forcibly overwrite someone else's personality and memories like that. Even if they are a shard of Ysayle, they deserve to be able to choose their own path and identity rather than having us selfishly force the identity of someone we lost into them. My personal headcanon is that she's actually the Source's shard of Igeyorhm, the very same Ascian who got her to summon Shiva in the first place. It's a fun lil source of Ascian angst: Igeyorhm, as penance for her errors on the Thirteenth, is tasked with screwing over a shard of her own self.
@@gwagner1380 Having a Crystal of Light doesn't mean you're a sundered Ascian I mean technically EVERYONE is a sundered Ancient, but the Crystal of Light just means you've done great deeds while possessed of the Echo

I played the free trial for the first time in the autumn of 2023, I ended up dropping the game after not clicking with it (I was maybe 25% through ARR). Despite my leaving, the one thing that stuck with me was the music, and specifically this song. And bc if it, and the FF16 collab, I gave FF14 another shot about a month and a half ago, and I'm so glad I did. Seeing the context for this song also makes it hit so much harder.
beautifully made vid! this is one of my fave songs in all of the game. i'm glad you chose to incude not just her fight, but the moment she helps the scions too... the lyrics always make me think of that scene. it's heartbreaking, but it works so beautifully, thank you!
The best part is you get a snapshot of the song here w/ the mount that drops from Extreme Mode. Honestly amazing effort making a song specific for each mount - makes them all feel unique and special
My first introduction to the varied music in this game. The transition blew me away. I wasn't disappointed with the rest of the soundtrack. Amazing stuff
Listening to this while me (WAR), my DRK support tank, and one of our healers carried everyone to victory in the extreme fight while all of our other party members were wiped is probably still my favorite memory in FFXIV to this day.
It was just by chance I heard the song clearly (albeit still lowish volume), while riding Boreas through Bozja. This is actually a boss song, why isn't this more popular??? [Good video btw, love the lyrics format and the kinda "music vid" feel]
It's really popular, just not in game. It's probably whereismyspoon (which does music uploads without lyrics) 2nd most viewed song. Only because Return to Oblivion beat it :p

@@TheSMBZfan1 Ardbert was partially responsible for that incredibly silly Warrior of Darkness arc, and Emet was a crypto-fascist Zodiark clone (like everyone tempered by Zodiark).
@@arsarma1808 For Ardbert, you would blame a man who was desperate for answers to save everyone he cared for and was too desperate? Yeah, he's responsible, but I don't think that makes him less likable, makes him more relatable. For Emet, after everything I've read and seen, he's not nearly as fascist as the others. He was willing to drop the Ascian Goal if we beat his little game of 'Contain the Light'. A True Fascist wouldn't have humored that idea that we could inherit the Ancient Legacy of protecting the Star, which was Emet's goal above all else. Honestly, I don't even think Zodiark tempered Emet, it's just easy to make that assumption.
@@TheSMBZfan1 His plan was to throw in with the people responsible for that kind of crap. Emet's behavior was a ruse to serve the needs of Zodiark. His "latch ditch effort" was in order to make sure knowledge of Ascians existed by any means, since Zodiark was made to preserve them. It's better to let the Ascians lay extinct, as it would mean no further efforts could be made to resurrect the primal. Also keep in mind he is directly responsible for every conflict you've had to deal with in Eorzea.
@@arsarma1808 OK, then I'm done, not gonna bother showing the facts that are presented in-game and present in Tales from the Shadow if you're gonna refute them like that.

You joke, but that's exactly what they did with the Endwalker theme bringing in Sam Carter from Architects lol. th-cam.com/video/jdWhJcrrjQs/w-d-xo.html
I'd say her ghost showing up to help you pry the eyes off of Estinien was intended to be pretty final. Having said that, they already introduced branching timelines, though...
The line "Can't defeat Her, so instead I'll have to be Her" is very interesting in context of the fact that Shiva turns into a mini-Hydaelyn in Eden... Just how troubled was Ysayle's relationship with Hydaelyn?
It wasn't. It's the massive amounts of aether melding with Hydaelyn in Ryne's body and being given form as a Primal in Shiva, which is why they swap consistently. That one's all our little cinnamon bun.
@@elodiealaya This. Shiva had no beef with Hydaelyn, that was all Ryne's doing. Being the Oracle of Light, her connection to Hydaelyn is (or was) stronger than even the WoLs.
@@elodiealaya I don't know about that... Venat and Hydaelyn in Endwalker have the same weapon-swapping mechanic as Ysayle!Shiva does, except with the bow phase replaced with chakrams because Dancer was obviously not a thing in 2.x.
The hokey '90s Girl Power vibe of this song makes me giggle, but it kind of fits Ysayle perfectly. She wants to be someone she isn't and will never be, takes up another person's cause and tries to make it her own. She has the spirit, but not the context and history. I love when she's taken down a peg. She starts to show a little more humility and nuance.

I enjoyed the class quests but really wasn't a fan of a lot of the main quest, especially since it took until _level 45_ for anything to happen... then, right when you take on Shiva? The game totally shifts. I'm glad people stuck with this MMO, because it is an amazing game once you finally get far enough past ARR. This still my fav trial song after all these years. I cant tell you how many times I farmed this just for the music at the time.
I wonder how much Ysayle knew about Hydaelin because the Reaper and "Her" sounds super familiar imo.
@@gwagner1380 Having a Crystal of Light doesn't mean you're a sundered Ascian
I mean technically EVERYONE is a sundered Ancient, but the Crystal of Light just means you've done great deeds while possessed of the Echo
@@BlueMageDaisen for a second I thought I had completely blacked out during the story or smth lol, thx for clarifying
@@BlueMageDaisen having the capability for the Echo means you are a sundered Amarouttine soul.
Will always be my favourite song. Relating to the lyrics also 100%, one of the few FFXIV tracks that have deeper meaning in it.
This and dragon song best 2 track in the game at least up endwalker idk about dawntrail yet but hard to beat those 2 track in my opinion
Interesting how the lyrics aligned perfectly with her final scene in the game. You may want to mark this one as a spoiler warning though.
definitely intentional. they write the main story beats about two years in advance and shiva wasnt really being discussed until a patch or two before heavensward
No one knew it was a spoiler til you said that
@@nanashi1173 Well do be fair this whole video is spoiler. It's been 6 years give or take since HW but I realize there's probably a wave of new players
@@nanashi1173 It has video from her final scene.
@@Brian-fh8pq yeah but I don’t think a player that hasn’t done this trial and is at least this far up in the game would go out of their way to search this tbh.
Seeing the context for this song also makes it hit so much harder.
the phase 2 song transitions is the hypest shit in FFXIV
beautifully made vid! this is one of my fave songs in all of the game. i'm glad you chose to incude not just her fight, but the moment she helps the scions too... the lyrics always make me think of that scene. it's heartbreaking, but it works so beautifully, thank you!
This song will take new meaning with all the players now playing AS the Reaper
Just wish we got a True Ice Sickle to go with it!
i made a shiva glam just for when i started reaper today!
That "fear the Reaper" lyric kind of hits different now that Endwalker is a thing...
Took a break from the game for quite a while. Started playing casually again. I still utterly adore Ysayle.
The best part is you get a snapshot of the song here w/ the mount that drops from Extreme Mode. Honestly amazing effort making a song specific for each mount - makes them all feel unique and special
The first time i got a glimpse of why so many people praised the music of this game.
My first introduction to the varied music in this game. The transition blew me away. I wasn't disappointed with the rest of the soundtrack. Amazing stuff
Ever learned how to do something dangerous? It makes this song make sense.
If you haven't yet you just need to.
>Drifting closer *to the edge*
I. Oh my lord.

I think this fight with this song was the moment I knew this was gonna be my game. Such a well done song, such a powerful way to amp the fight up!
Ok oOoOO lol

i like how the song ends once estinien rolls in it's like estinien walks in and the video is like "OMG ESTINIEN IS HERE! CUT CUT!" XD
Listening to this while me (WAR), my DRK support tank, and one of our healers carried everyone to victory in the extreme fight while all of our other party members were wiped is probably still my favorite memory in FFXIV to this day.
The song has such an early/mid 2000s vibe 😁
I always loved the cheeky Frozen reference:
"These voices telling me let it go!"
It was just by chance I heard the song clearly (albeit still lowish volume), while riding Boreas through Bozja. This is actually a boss song, why isn't this more popular??? [Good video btw, love the lyrics format and the kinda "music vid" feel]
Probably because its from arr and return to oblivion exists. Its by far the best song in arr (besides answers maybe) and I wish it got more love
It's really popular, just not in game. It's probably whereismyspoon (which does music uploads without lyrics) 2nd most viewed song. Only because Return to Oblivion beat it :p
@@JudgeAnnibal fun fact, shiva theme is 400k views higher than return to oblivion on whereismyspoon channel as of 3rd of March 2021 haha
@@Fayklore in no way possibly related to the age of both videos :P
sadly, return to oblivion is mid.
I remember being so hyped while doing this raid, i miss these days
This may be my favorite boss fight just cuz of this banger.
Man the way you make your lyrics videos are legit my favorite thing BHGDFBHJGFDJ The next line of lyrics on the screen, the countdown after a music break. It's so fuckin good, I wish everyone else did this
This was the moment the game destroyed my social life and hit all my nerve endings at the same time.
Bruh are you ok? Sounds rough 😣
Just beat Shiva and god I love this game so much. The Diamond Dust moment made me so giddy 🤩🤩🤩
I was kinda rushing through the post-ARR content to get to Heavensward, but even still, Shiva's boss always stuck with me, and this song definitely helped with that.
I miss Ysayle so much. I wish there was even one character in Shadowbringers that I was half as attached to as I was to Ysayle...
Ardbert and Emet didn't catch your attention?
I didn't how much of the lyric work Koji did until recently. That dude is increible.
I still feel like they missed an opportunity by not having this play her in when she saves you from the Galarians
First MMO to make me cry. That cutscene in heavensward was heart breaking… I’ll keep your dream alive ice queen:”.
RIP Ysayle. Even in the stuff that came after she was my favorite character.
Kind of great how well these lyrics fit Endwalker thematically as well.
From what I heard, they couldn't hire professional singers since they were working on a tight budget so they decided to ask a woman from their localization team to sing.
Why? Because one of her co-workers heard her singing karaoke and she rips it.
Just a heads up but if you get the Boreas mount from Shiva Extreme. This plays while riding it
Seeing this live at 2014 fanfest was just amazeballs.
I really love all the trials but this fight is one of the few times I actually got hyped playing ARR very good👍
I can't believe they brought in Paramore for this boss theme. Good on them 👍
You joke, but that's exactly what they did with the Endwalker theme bringing in Sam Carter from Architects lol.
th-cam.com/video/jdWhJcrrjQs/w-d-xo.html
Lyrics hit even harder after Endwalker recontextualizes the parallels drawn here.
Yess it basically sums it up, I've been riding the mount through the whole story .
I still miss Ysayle… I guess we can hope she somehow survived the fall from Azys Lla, but, like Francel says, it never gets any easier…
I'd say her ghost showing up to help you pry the eyes off of Estinien was intended to be pretty final. Having said that, they already introduced branching timelines, though...
I've never heard the theory that she's still alive and frankly I'm all for it. If she comes back in the Endwalker patches I'll lose my sh*t.
@@the.duck.is.ronin. , spoilers...
Theory's shot to hell. She saves your sorry ass one last time, though...
i don't play ffxiv anymore but i resonate so much with this song
When I first heard this song in the game, I was too busy headbanging that my team got wiped 5 times.
Still my favorite song in all of FF14.
I think she was referring to the reaper.
@@JustCommonPlain As the god that presides over both Light and the Underworld/Lifestream, the Reaper would be Hydaelyn, though, right?
@@elodiealaya I don't know about that... Venat and Hydaelyn in Endwalker have the same weapon-swapping mechanic as Ysayle!Shiva does, except with the bow phase replaced with chakrams because Dancer was obviously not a thing in 2.x.
This is why Boreas is on my mount hotbar
Same here lol only mount I use I walk everywhere but once or twice tell I got boreas lol
To this date, my top favorite song from the game. Only reasons I still have the ice horse 🐎 in my mount roulette!
4:41 "Are you saying I can dodge bullets?"
"No. I'm saying that when you are ready, you won't have to."
This is my fav song rn in all of FFXIV
Jeez this song hits harder when you can understand the lyrics.
After finish Heavensward, i cry listening to this song.
Thanks for makin' me cry, dude :P
New player (a month in) and... I gotta agree with all the comments here.
Heavensward is absolutely incredible and I hear it only gets better as I continue!
We TWEWY now
Oh is this the same singer for the world ends with you soundtrack?!
@@Fayklore You'd think so, but I did a little digging and alas although they sound the same, it's entirely different singers :(
any examples from TWEWY i can listen to?

Man... I love everything about FFXIV after ARR. If you ask me they should revamp the whole ARR -arc or make the new expansion as a NEW starting point for the new players and do like a cinematic recap about the story for them at the start.
Extreme shiva will always be my favorite trial. Farming for boreas was made much more bearable by this song.
Damn, Meteion and her sisters sing fire 🎶

God Ysayle's so fuckin' cool.
I still get hyped when I get this trial. Bkrd music turned back on and full blast. I've died so many times in this fight cause I was just jamming out and not even paying attention lol
This trial was the reason Heavensward will be the #1 expansion for me forever.
My favourite song from the game so far.
The MOMENT this song explodes into existance is when people either become fully tempered by the game or finally decide it is not for them.
There is no in-between, and both are equally valid.
Me though? You bet your weeping behinds I am still tempered by the Elder Primal that is Final Fantasy XIV.
Song is a masterpiece
I LOVE this song XD (Beer'me Nuke'em Midgardsormr) thanks thank for sharing this with the cool overlapping lyrics and scenes 😄
I love all the lovin shiva gets
