  • Garry Kasparov and Hikaru Nakamura competed for the first time in an event put on by the Saint Louis Chess Club and Scholastic Center on April 28th and 29th of 2016 . The 2-day event, titled "Ultimate Blitz Challenge", starred Garry Kasparov along with the top 3 finishers of the 2016 U.S. Chess Championship. The 4 participants, namely Garry Kasparov, the 2016 U.S. Chess Champion Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, and Hikaru Nakamura would play a total of 6 rounds with all players playing one another once each round. The time control for each blitz chess game was 5 minutes with a 3 second delay. Highlighted in this video, without commentary, are the 6 games played between the legendary Garry Kasparov, and Hikaru Nakamura. The winner of the event was Hikaru Nakamura who topped the 4-player field with 11/18 points.

    Unbelievable how good Kasparov still is, 10 years after leaving competitive chess behind. Fantastic to see.

      kingshearer2 "Just blitz"? How can you say that when he's just kept up against arguably currently the best blitz player in the world, Nakamura, as well as the current second and ninth best in the world on the FIDE ratings, despite having been retired for 10 years? In fact, in some of those games it seemed as though he only lost because he had time trouble!

    • @kingshearer2
      @kingshearer2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Perhaps I was a bit harsh, Garry has always been the best blitz player. I'm hoping he reads my comment and comes out of retirement and enters the candidates tournament!

      kingshearer2 proves the point even more lol. Kasparov at such older age than young Nakamura still managed to beat him

    As is the usual case with these rare commentary-less videos, see the description for more info. This was a fun one to put together. I hope you enjoy viewing the games as much as I did.

      +ChessNetwork Poetic.. The music is also accurate. I feel like there are a lot of parallels between classical music composers and modern chess players.. prodigy's in the same way making art in high intellectualism & spirit. I also admire the respect in the game. Props to Nakamura for not being edgy about Kasparov's touch-rule knight in game 2

    Garry Kasparov what a legend, quit 10 years ago and yet crushing one of the best players in the world, imagine Nakamura playing Kasparov at his peak, score would have been at least 4-2 for Garry.

    Beautiful choice of song, Gerry! (or Jerry, which do you prefer?) I know Blitz games aren't meant to be dissected, but hopefully you are planning on doing some commentary! I imagine some of these games were crazy at a deep level and there are some incredible tactics that everyone (including the players!) probably missed!

    this is very depressive for young top players of today's chess , Kasparov at 53 y.o ....20 years after his prime , beating the 2nd best blitz player in the world at the moment of this event is priceless , this Kasparov convinced the planet chess that he would destroy the new generation of chess players easily in his prime !!! now good news mr N.Short ! ...it was not because of you last year , you did your best !

    Do we know what Kasparov's rating is now? Or is that just not relevant? Im unsure how inactive players ratings change? It would be an even greater achievement by him if his rating was much lower than at his peak. And conversely if he is still 2812 well then how about a "friendly" game vs Carlsen?

  • @GamingTakesPride
    @GamingTakesPride 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Ratings on ICC are not accurate. They are the normal standard chess ratings. Naka's live Blitz chess rating is 2883. He's #2 in the world, with Magus at #1 at 2915.

      Clyde Rembrandt Yes. But I was wondering what he was thinking. That seemed like the most obvious move.

    • @HopyHop1
      @HopyHop1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dragos Puri
      He didn't see that after Nxf7 (as played in the game) or Nc6 (attacking b4 while also having access to e5) that if the rook then takes the attacked knight on d3 the remaining knight can move to e5, forking the king and the rook. He may have been playing to take advantage of a weak 1st rank too (eg. Nxb4, Rd1#). I guess he thought he would end up capturing one of the attacked knights while also forcing Naka to parry a looming back rank threat. However, as mentioned earlier, the e5 fork foils the plan. IDK, but that's my best guess.
      He had 8 seconds left on his clock, so he didn't have a whole lot of time to think it through.

    • @alfredfx0
      @alfredfx0 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dragos Puri blunder, he probably thought he can still take a knight on d8 or d3 with that rd5 move but he missed Nxf7 saving the piece, now Rxd3 falls to Ne5+ followed by Nxe3, thats my opinion

    • @watteau6646
      @watteau6646 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blunder. He saw Rd1 mate opportunity, and thought it would be strong to trade knights, (Rxd3)not realizing that would put his mating rook on a fork square after Nf7-e5+.

      I think very highly of Kasparov for opposing Putin. I'm not sure why It's an "unhealthy obsession" rather than a deep moral commitment to his country (which places his own welfare at risk). I had not known that Kasparov was antisemitic. Is there any evidence to support that claim?

      +tony0000 Kasparov's politics are basically an extension of Bush-era neo-conservatism where the goal was to subdue and weaken Russia for the benefit of US geopolitical ambitions and corporate interests in resource exploitation. His goal was to be the one that the US propped up when Putin fell; the Saakasvhili or Poroshenko of Russia. That's why his approval ratings in Russia are in single-digits. People see right through his faux-patriotism.

    Is no one going to comment on Nakamura's blunder @ 18:05 Game 6???

      What else to say? He overlooked the pawn fork. That's why he eventually lost that game, and the match.

      Well, it's only blitz. Not like he lost the World Championship or anything. And it was against the 100-eyed monster called Garry Kasparov. Just enjoyable to watch blitz chess at this high level! Naka is such a creative and aggressive player!

  • @MultiUltimater
    @MultiUltimater 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    2:49 how is that a draw? Nakamura had less than a second left.

    • @watteau6646
      @watteau6646 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a time increment, not sudden death blitz, so as long as Naka moves quickly, he'll always have time. Plus Naka can keep moving Ra5-a6-a5 and Garry could not make progress. He cannot move laterally, or else he'll lose material. Or Garry probably didn't look at Naka's clock, knowing Naka can shift his rook all day for time, since he was in no danger and it was up to Garry to improve the position.
