@@photonicpizza1466 Kasparov is superior to Magnus in almost every way imo. Game win rate, tournament win rate, difference in strength/accuracy between the champion and the rest of the crop, even in elo if you account for elo inflation (And listen to this crazy statistic, Magnus is currently rated 2839, in 2023. Kasparov was rated 2851 in 1999, 24 years ago! When few players had even broken 2700!). Even when it comes to computer accuracy, Magnus is 70 percent, Kasparov is 69, *even before* there were computers beating players/improving theory, and all that massive gain in chess knowledge, opening knowledge etc. Kasparov is the greater chess player. And if Kasparov had been born in 1990, he'd be the best today imo, no question about it.
Btw for those who don't know and I only briefly raise this because some people always bring it up, when Magnus drew Kasparov as a kid, it was one game of a three-game rapid match, in which Kasparov beat Magnus twice, knocking him out of the tournament (obviously im not suggesting that's evidence for Kasparov being better than Magnus, since he was just a kid) it's just a reply to those who say 'if Magnus could draw him as a kid imagine..' He didn't draw the match, he lost it, being crushed in 19 moves in one game.

Love your content, Levy, love this video.
I think the scrambled positions make the game more even between Kasparov and the current generation, because newer generation of chess players studies the openings ridiculously well these days. The analysis and the preparation are godlike and it is totally fair Kasparov is not trying to keep up with that in his age. But when others cannot overprepare with engines, his intuitive understanding of the game and his tactical vision can make unsure even the current world elite.

I was really confused why Robson did not just take the pawn at 26:30. It looks like the most intuitive move and prevents a lot of the chaos that leaving it so close to promotion causes. I plugged the position into an engine and it's also the best move by about a -4 margin. I looked at the recording of the game and Robson was below 10 seconds for most of the endgame so I guess that explains it, but it still struck me as peculiar.

In the Hikaru ending, starting at 18:06, it's actually pretty trivial to calculate that White queens in time. Staring with Black K:b5, the Black king moves 3 times to take on b5 & a3, then the b-pawn moves 5 times to queen, so 8 moves in all. White takes 3 moves to capture the Black f-pawn, then moves again to get out of the way, then his f-pawn moves 4 times to queen, again 8 moves total. Regarding the earlier rook and bishop exchanges, as you note it's fantastic instinct on Gary's part.

If you see 10 moves you are beyond grandmaster level hahaha. Im a 2000 rated player and i can see only 2 or 3 variants of 3 or 4 moves

Great vid Gotham. Btw Kasparov does spend a lot of time in Croatia (Podstrana, near Split in Dalmatia region) and he spent all of his time there during lockdowns so there are rumors that he has moved to Croatia for good.

About the Croatian flag, Garry actually has Croatian citizenship since 2014 as he was praised for his lobbying for Croatia in the 90s independence war, he spends a lot of time at his home near Makarska and speaks Croatian as well :)
