New York City Homeless Man Lost His Job After a Stroke.

  • In general, a chronically homeless person is an unaccompanied disabled individual who has been continuously homeless for over one year, at least that's how the government defines it.
    I met Rick near Times Square in New York City. Rick worked at the same job for 37 years, but after a stroke caused challenges, he lost his job and ran out of money. He has been turned down for disability so that leaves him out on the streets.
    Rick has been homeless for 3 months. Most of the support for fighting homelessness is targeting to chronic homeless. But according to HUD you have to be homeless for longer than a year to qualify.

    About Invisible People:
    Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as TH-cam, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
    Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
    Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

    It's disgusting this man should be left on the street after working all his life and having a stroke, making him wait to get a pension after paying taxes all his life. This is incredibly bad to treat citizens this way, he shouldn't be embarrassed, his government should be embarrassed and ashamed.

      @moreofawave 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can blame it on a few things but one of them, no doubt, is all those people who lie or exaggerate to get on disability because they want to retire early. How do illegitimate claims get through? I don't know but they do. Then after too many people are on the system they clamp down on the process and people like this guy can't get on it. I knew an old co-worker who was almost blind in one eye and partially blind in another and she was denied twice before she could get on it,

    • @ezwayocho8296
      @ezwayocho8296 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @antonin zachoval I can tell you exactly how it happens. Ppl. living on SSI or disability are on a fixed income. Rent on the other hand, is not "fixed" amount but goes UP 👆 every 6 months, or every year, depending on whether you're doing a 6 month lease or 1 year. At EVERY LEASE RENEWAL , the rent goes UP! 👆
      If a person goes into an apartment at $500/mo. , within 2 years it can easily become unaffordable for someone on a fixed income. I know because I was in an apt. for 3 years and was only one more lease renewal (rent increase) away from being homeless. I live with family now
      Edit: Just want to clarify that these rent increases are $75 each lease renewal. So, a $500/ mo. apt. would be $650/ in ✌️ years (on a 12 month lease) OR $800/mo. if doing 6 month lease. Meanwhile, the person's income remains the same😞
      This is why so many disabled homeless. The system is set up this way😢

    if what he says is true, and he lost the use of his arm due to a stroke, and has other debilitating conditions, then disability cannot deny him. if they did, then he should go and tell his story to a few lawyers.

    He calls it 'God' because of social conditioning. Also most religious people don't see hardship as a curse but as a test from sky man however this makes them detach from the situation and look forward to better times. I would say it is not God treating him like shit, its the broken social system in the US.

    I brought that up to a Republican the other day, and they couldn't believe I even mentioned such a horrible idea... 'They' didn't want to be taxed for the something that didn't only benefit them. This is just one of the many problems with America.. The rich are taxed the least and the poor the most. The people in charge just want to protect Big Business my freind and healthcare is a thriving business. -.-"

    Liberty of Human Need
    There is a certain Liberty
    Granted man upon this earth
    Not by station nor by nation
    Freedom is a right of birth
    Each up to a tax free acre
    Sustenance of land and sea
    Medicaid, safe drinking water
    Education always free
    Never tax a home of shelter
    Never tax real food or seeds
    Tax instead big business profit
    Vacant homes and offshore deeds
    Tax be levied upon riches
    Tax upon desires of greed
    But never let a tax be set
    Upon a blessed human need

    Sad frustrating, to watch and hear this as a viewer. This person still appreciating just getting good by homeless after a stroke that did enough to take him out of the work environment that he has matinee since the age of 17 and he is not getting the help he needs. Someone in good hopes, and doesn't use drugs or blame his belief in God. Folks this just isn't right and very difficult to watch and hear people like this. One positive thing I can get from this is to tighten up on bad thinking on senerios situations in my life that really aren't that bad. Point being it should not take seeing something like this to realize my poor thinking . What's happening to this man and many others just isn't right!

    C'mon people, don't feel bad for this guy...feel bad for a system in which some poor caseworker is obliged to stamp "DENIED" on a homeless stroke victim's disability request while Bill Gates publicly wrings his hands with worry, anxious that some presidential candidate might succeed in taxing some of his $100 billion fortune to relieve the misery of that very stroke victim. Cry for a system in which politicians go straight from prayer breakfasts to houses of Congress to vote themselves tax breaks that beggar millions of people exactly like our homeless friend here. And precious few think there's anything strange about this at all.
