    0:00 - Introduction
    02:30 - 17th Century hall
    06:12 - 18th/19th Century hall
    09:29 - World War One hall
    17:13 - World War Two hall
    20:24 - Naval history area
    I recently had a chance to visit the Austrian Museum of Military History, and figured it would be nice to film a tour for the channel. The museum is in Vienna (the address is actually "Arsenal 1") and is one of the oldest continuously-operating military museums in Europe. There are four main galleries, and while they have a lot of very good sub-collections I think the real strength of the museum is the World War One section.
    A few of the highlights include:
    - Perhaps the best collection extant of 17th century Turkish arms
    - A 380mm WW1 siege gun
    - Girandoni air rifle and it's air pump
    - WW1 compressed-air mortars
    - Salvatore-Dormus machine guns, and several Villar Peruses
    - Artifacts from the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, including his car and uniform and three of Princip's groups' FN 1910 pistols
    If you are in Vienna, it is definitely a museum worth stopping in to see! I am looking forward to a future visit myself to see the new World War Two exhibits, which are expected to open in 2024.

    I had e-mailed the HGM directly a few months ago while researching a uniform impression to compliment my Werndl M1867. A curator was kind enough to send me photos of the 1878 Infantry Regiment No. 4 uniform on display in Franz Joseph hall, along with some suggested reading materials. Thanks to their help I was able to procure a correct replica cartridge box and several other uniform components. I will always be grateful for their assistance, and it is my dream to someday visit them in person. You have no idea how happy this video makes me.

      You can catch a glimpse of the uniform at 10:44 - in the front section of the display case to the right! The large leather cartridge box and 'feldflasche' canteen are clearly visible.

    I’ve been there twice - well worth visiting! Ian is right: the WWII collection is disjointed. The WWI collection is phenomenal and you could easily spend a whole day going through it if looking at things in detail. Don’t burn yourself out on the upper floors before heading downstairs to the world war exhibits. If you have a backpack or bags put them in the self-serve lockers near the entrance - it’ll be tiring hauling them around all day. Also a lunch break in the café is good idea.
    Ian doesn’t mention it but there’s a tank park out back and old artillery pieces scattered around outside.

When I think of Austria, I think of the Hapsburgs not WW2, so that's the history I was looking for going in. I agree with Ian, the WW2 section was light but I didn't mind. In fact it kind of felt somewhat out of place there. To me the building felt like a shrine to the Hapsburg's time of rule and personally I won't have minded them ending the museum history at 1918 and having a separate building for WW2. Definitely worth going to if you find yourself in Vienna.

    Hi Ian,
    great to see you admiring the Heeregeschichtliche Museum. It's my favorite museum and worth a visit every few years, they redecorate and enhance their exhibition.
    Where other museums have weapons, flags and uniforms, the HGM has over and above that lots of personal items/relics from Prinz Eugen, Wallenstein, Napoleon, from an osman Pascha, Franz Ferdinand (as you have shown) and others. This makes a change for me from an generic exhibition to histoy, I can grasp literally with my hands ;)
    They have also the best slogan I'm aware of: Kriege gehören ins Museum / wars belong in the museum.
    I also like the bavarian military museum in Ingolstadt, both bring in their local specialties, which are really interesting and get lost on most publications about the different times. ;)

    One of the things I love about Forgotten Weapons is that it gives me a glimpse of the world outside of my Americano-centric gun and military culture. Ian, you do an amazing job of broadening people's perspectives.

    4:55 - Sword seems to be a Koncerz, primarilty associated with the Polish-Lithuanian Hussars of the Renaissance, and is 51"-55"

    • @adambielen8996
      @adambielen8996 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is correct. It is basically a back up lance for when you real one breaks but it can also be used in a melee unlike a lance.

      Confused why they didn't make the handle long enough to give you the option to wield it both handed.

    • @adambielen8996
      @adambielen8996 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DerOrk Because wielding a weapon two-handed on horseback gets awkward. The Horse's neck and rump get in the way of a lot of guards and attacks. Also the Koncerz is a thrusting weapon.

    Vienna is a remarkably beautiful city and the museum wasn't an exception. Frankly the whole place made me feel thankful that they had all the money, as I can only imagine how freakishly expensive it must have been to build all that stuff that we can still enjoy.

    Hi Ian. I just love your content and would like to see more museum tours whenever you get a chance. I'll be visiting Vienna this summer and I'll definitely go there. By the way, I'd like to recommend the crime museum in Vienna its really fascinating little museum. All the best and keep up the absolutely fantastic work you've been doing. Cheers. Eran.

    I was able to spend a couple days in Vienna in 2019 while travelling for work, and this museum was my first stop. The WWI collection left a strong impression, particularly the juxtaposition of the Brownings in the Franz Ferdinand room, versus the colossal anti-fortress artillery a room or two over that a few shots from those little pistols led to.

    I've not visited but my parents have when they went to Austria so its on a bucket list for the far future. Love the museum visits you do as for a lot of us, hasn't been a lot of traveling for the last few years and if nothing else its worth it for the art and architecture alone.

    I was able to visit this museum several years ago (2018). I spent the better part of a day there, much to my wife's dismay. I has planned on going back, but European travel has gotten much more expensive. I had a local cop who was able to act as a tour guide. He was former military, and was invaluable in his knowledge of everything there. This is one of my favorite museums of all time. There are a bunch of vehicles in a separate building from the main museum that I geeked out over.
