It's such a totally different sound I practice standard course so much until I got sick of them 😫 but this dropped to voicing I hear the difference and I hear the possibilities this was a great video thank you 🎹😊
Thank you thank you thank you. This is the only video on TH-cam thats teaching drop 2 that’s actually worth watching because you’re actually teaching. Others just jump around a 100 miles an hour. THANK YOU 🙏
Corey thank you so much for sharing your gift. I just came across one of your videos by chance and I’ve learned so much in one night. I can’t stop watching lol. Thank you, sincerely.
Excellent collaboration! Clearly explained. Finally I understand this concept! Also appreciate the sheet music. Thank you...I’m really enjoying your channel 🙏🏾
Is there more than one way to interpret drop-two voicing? A book I’m reading on jazz harmony describes drop two as dropping the second note from the bottom of a close position chord ie: E in a Cmaj7 root position chord. However here you describe it as dropping the second note from the top of the chord so G . I have also heard it described this way from other sources. It’s kind of confusing because there seems to be more than one way people think about drop two.
Hey Mjordan! Fortunately, Drop-2 has been clearly defined in music theory as taking the 2nd highest note (voice) in a chord and moving it down one octave. So, I would definitely say that there is only one universal way of understanding the formation of Drop-2. And I would say that the jazz harmony book you are reading is absolutely incorrect. Can you please share the book and page where you found this?
@@SkilledMusician sure the book is titled “A Creative Approach to Jazz Piano Harmony” by Bill Dobbins it’s on page 16 where he first introduces drop-two voicings. He says “Notice that in drop-two seventh chord voicings the chord members which were in the second voice from the bottom of a close position voicing are now in the top voice.” Upon looking at his examples closer now I’m seeing that he still ends up with the same voicings you present here. His explanation of what drop two means is what caused my confusion really, because it differs from how it’s described in so many other places. Other than this I like this book and the exercises in it, they have helped me learn about how to make more complex chords. I am just starting to study more advanced harmony on piano and jazz theory and I’ve been learning from TH-cam and books, and reading stuff online. With somethings it’s hard to figure out what something means when reading it though. That’s why I always try to find a TH-cam video on the concept I learn from books.
I have that book and just looked at it. I can definitely see how that wording can trip anyone up. With that said, I am a huge fan of Bill Dobbins! His book, Creative Approach to Jazz Harmony, is definitely a seminal work, and has had a significant impact on how I think about harmony. Great choice! Be Blessed and Happy Practicing!
I generally try to hear like a singer. So even though I am not a singer, I sing all the time because I want to hear on the piano in that way. There are always pianistic things that we can do, but for me, melody is most important, and the human voice is the most melodic instrument I know. And so I want to capture that on piano. It still boggles my mind how singers are able to pull these crazy variations on the same song... Please let me know what specific timestamp you are referencing..
Hey Leon! Yes you can! And you'll find some interesting voicings, but a lot of them won't sound good... But there will be some cool ones. Let me know which ones you like.
I’m glad I could help. Everyone hears differently, so everyone gravitates to a particular style of speaking or teaching. Not bad, just different! Be Blessed and Happy Practicing!
Hey Nana! Mike Bereal definitely uses these voicings, just like this. But he also uses tons of other voicings. You have to listen very closely to pick up where he does it!
That was a little akward, but I just think it was that Warren was focused on getting into the lesson and his mind was somewhere else. I don't think he meant anything by that.
Thanks! I definitely understand what you mean, which is why we’ve decided to focus on Gospel music. Just so you know, this Labor Day weekend we are launching our new membership site for gospel musicians. You should definitely check it out as it is full of theory training and more!
Skilled Musician I will definitely will be signing up, I'm at the intermediate level and have added double fillers and licks as well as other forms of musical expression just by watching four videos. So how did you hear that melody... what made your brain go to that particular melody ???
I generally try to hear like a singer. So even though I am not a singer, I sing all the time because I want to hear on the piano in that way. mike bereal really uses these voicings but it kinda sounds different cause of his left hand voicings
Hey Nana! Mike Bereal definitely uses these voicings, just like this. But he also uses tons of other voicings. You have to listen very closely to pick up where he does it!
cmon youtube, don't show me ads with Santana... I cant skip it.
Oh wow... I'm so sorry about that... Lol
1:40 Dude couldn't say thank you or something more graceful? I guess arrogance doesn't permit that
That was a little akward, but I just think it was that Warren was focused on getting into the lesson and his mind was somewhere else. I don't think he meant anything by that.
Skilled Musician After, it was smooth sailing so maybe. Great video though. Super easy to understand
Sounds like talk music lol
You can definitely use this for talk music!
This was amazing to me because it's so hard to find theory associated with gospel.
