    Say Corey, have you heard of (and I'm almost 100% sure that you have) one of the great Jazz pianist in history, "Phineas Newborn Jr."?....When I first became aware of him, someone was playing his music and the piano player to me was so FIRE, Ihad to ask who it was! Everyone says he's great but not brought up enough in conversations of the "Jazz pianist G.O.A.T.s"...He became my new favorite, so I would like to know what you think about Mr. Phineas Newborn Jr.!

    Hi there new sub here amazing content! Just very curious,this jazz licks looks really just random melodies its just that you are following some specific rules like what i notice..you can go chromatic or press any key even but at the end of the beat you would need to end on a chordal tone?maybe can you help do video on this technique?like at which point do we end,how to sync with the off beat and stncopation techniques coz memorizing this licks can feel forced and not the free flowing you see on jazz improvs..and also can you do on key of c which is the easiest scale we memorize for beginners?cheers!

    • @SkilledMusician
      @SkilledMusician  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for subscribing and good question! There are some underlying, foundation rules that govern this type of improvisation. I actually go in-depth on this in my improvisation course. Check it out on our website - SkilledMusician.com.
      As a side note, learning the jazz vocabulary (licks) is also part of the formula. Many students erroneously think that when we improvise, we are just randomly playing stuff and making it all work together. That is not the case. Improvisation is just like speaking. If I asked you to talk about any topic, the words you would use are words that you've used before. You might arrange them in a different manner, but they are still the words and phrases you've learned. In other words, you are using the words that are part of your vocabulary. Similarly, in music, you develop your vocabulary. And the bigger your vocabulary, the more "free" it appears you are. But you are just using the words in your musical vocabulary in different ways!
      Interestingly enough, in Jazz, the keys they most often start with are F, Bb, and C. You didn't ask this, but I would love to share my thoughts on the key conversation with you. 1) There are no easy or hard keys, just familiar and unfamiliar ones. 2) I've found that when students lean on one key as the key for all examples or the key they learn in, they become really good at that one key. Most students say once I learn it in "C" then I will transfer it to other keys. I've found that in the vast majority of times, that does not happen. 3) I believe that introducing students to multiple keys, helps students become intimately familiar with all keys and how they function. Which ultimately leads to students who can play well in every key.
      Sorry about the long answer here. Just wanted to share some thoughts. Thank you again for subscribing and welcome to our community!
