    I run cross country 19:38 5k, and I'm also a sprinter 24.84 sec. 200m. Cross country has helped me stay fit and sometimes for practice we do sprints.

    I'm a junior in HS and I run the 200 and 400 and starting hurdles. I started cross country sophomore year and my sophomore year of track was great! Cross country had helped me so much! My stride was better my times were amazing! I'm doing cross country agin this year I I can't wait for my times in track! My workouts for cross country is pretty simple. Two of the fives days I have a sprint workout and then the long run days my coach doesn't left me go past 5 miles.

    thanks for the video. But I have my sprinters run cross country. three reasons. 1) I can legally coach them during this time. 2) sprinters come to cc practice and run sprint workouts, lift, plyos, etc. 3) cc is a better alternative than sitting on the couch for 8 months until track rolls around. just a different perspective! thanks again for all of your videos.

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha I actually completely agree with that approach. I was going to mention its fine to run cross country if the coach adjusts your workouts a bit for shorter distances then say the pure cross runners. Sounds like a great program you got going. Keep up the good work :)

    I am best at sprinting 400m and below but signed up for cross country at the moment since it's off season. It's hard,yes. Fun, yes. Torcher, yes. I wanna quit, yes. But in the end a sprinter can run far and still sprint. It is not that hard If you PRACTICE. I'm forced so...no choice there XD

    You should try it. I used to sprint (60-200). And I was pretty good (12th in the 60m and 15th in the 200m in the Latvian U12 championships)
    Then, my coach basically made my group's warmups endurance training (20-70min of running in the forest) in order to get us ready for an XC race happening in Lithuania. It was kind of a big deal to me because it was my first international competition. The course for my age group was 1852m (1 nautical mile) long and I came in 7th. It was the best I'd ever done in a competition. I was moved to the middle distance and I recently qualified for the Latvian championships in the 1000m with a time of 3.12 (that's pretty good for a 12 year old). Moral of the story- try it. You might be better suited for mid/long distance than sprints. Also I wanted to brag.

    Your body will not switch fast twitch fibers to low switch fibers. There's no evidence for that, but of course you'll thin out and adapt if you start once your mileage, your body will always adapt to the activity your doing. The muscle fiber type is not what changes though, it's which type you're stimulating with your training

    • @chuckiemeister
      @chuckiemeister 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You are correct, that is one item he has misquoted. The muscle types he is referring are also more known as Type 1(endurance), Type 2B(sprint/explosive) and Type 2A Hybrid.

    I don’t see how running cross country would be that harmful to sprinters. I’m skinny as a stick and I’m a 3200m runner during the track season, but I’m able to get about 24 seconds in the last 200m after a workout on the track. In fact, most of the varsity distance runners I know are good at all running events and are right behind the sprinters in their own events even though we don’t train for those events.

    If you are a 100/200 sprinter and want to do a fall sport, play football or soccer. . Distance running will kill your explosiveness. If you are a 400/800 runner, then XC can give you a good base.

    I’m a 100/200 sprinter in highschool. I do xc but the way I get back into the sprint like exercise s is by doing winter track. We usually have winter track. It is mostly just weight lifting, calf explosion stuff and like getting back to moving so I think I can still do xc. I’m not over the top good at both but I’m above average I’d say. I’m a freshman rn and track just ended. I started the season with a 14.1 and now I have a 12.8. I’m on jv. My 5k time is a 20:30. At end of season

    If you are a sprinter do football or wrestling in the off season if you're school doesn't have an off season team. You'll be competing still which will push you harder than working out on your own and those sports are all about speed and explosiveness. Ask any wrestler and he'll tell you that you have to have fast and powerful legs for a take down and ask any football player and he will say the same thing about making a block or a tackle or a truck

      Maybe you should consider playing another sport in the off season like basketball or soccer or anything that works on your fast twitch muscle fibers. Honestly even you took a weight lifting class and didn't run in the off season it would do you better. If your school is like my HS then your XC will be doing 40 miles a week on workouts. And no speed training. This would leave you slow and weak for the 100m

    Im a junior in HS. This year was my first year running XC. By end of the season, my time was 20:25. This is year is my second year running track (started in 10th). From my perspective XC DOES help alot. Yes, its hard but at the end of the day its fun and helps tons. XC has help me with my endurance, stride, pacing, and helped me run on my toes more. Im flatfooted😂. This year I run 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, and 4x800/800. If u do XC it will help you become faster, stronger, stay fit, and helps alot with your endurance. Example last year I ran a 2:41 800m. This year I got down to a 2:23. Aint super great 800 time but still good and its a pr👍. I say try it. If you dont like it then dont do it

    If you're a short sprinter, Yall please dont do cross country and learn from my mistake. I am a 100, 200, 400 sprinter. I haven't touched cross country or anything over the 400 in 5 years since i ran the 800 in elemenatary school. Just so happens, my high school year, my high school coach was asking for everyone to run cross country. Everything went down hill for me. I ran only 2 miles without even trying my hardest and ended up tearing my hip flexor. It was a 6 month recovery. Both my knees and hips were hurting and bothering me. I had a great physical therapy doctor to get me back on track and get my bones back on track and told me good thing I caught it early. If you're a short distance sprinter....STAY AWAY FROM CROSS COUNTRY. Or learn the hard way like I did. (Edit: I was on crutches for almost 2 months)

      In general you don't want to do long runs before sprinting workouts or lifting workouts. You would be much better off doing a dynamic warm up like the one I linked in this video. If you want to do general endurance workouts or distance runs, do them on your off days or after your track and lifting workouts.

    I'm a sprinter but I do mostly 400s and 200s and maybe even 800s, so my coaches told me that I should definitely do cross country. I'm very skinny too like many distance runners, so maybe I'll be better at distance.

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can usually tell where your talents are as a runner by doing a few different events...if the 100/200 is not your best then possibly the 400. If you still don't have the natural speed for a 400 then you can bump up to other events like the 800, mile etc.

    running long distance didnt make you slower, not working on sprinting made you slower. If you didnt run at all and just sat on the couch youd get slower too because you didnt practice sprinting, dont blame that in distance running.

    I do both 100m hurdles and 300m hurdles and in addition to 3 days a week of track summer workouts (for sprinters and hurdlers) I go to two cross-country practices a week (for endurance, usually only run 1.5 to 2.5 miles). Is this bad for my speed or am I in the clear?

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you should be fine with that...just be careful you're not doing too much in the summer in general. Your body needs time to recover so if you train 5 days a week for an entire year, you're probably going to be a bit burnt out for your track season

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man! For jumpers you guys are basically training like a 100 meter runner. You're really just a sprinter who also jumps at the end of their runs right. So you would want to be doing lots of sprints, plyo's, explosive movements and obviously lots of tech work for your specific event. The one exception to this I would say is high jump. They should be doing about half as much sprinting work and more plyo, tech work.

    No cross country sucks for sprinters. Running at top speed 3 times a week makes you faster than daily long distance. It’s fine for sprinters to run far and play other sports sometimes but not cross country. Because that is very different from speed and that’s a whole season of jogging so that’s mostly stamina. Cross country kids sometimes run 7 miles in workouts even 3 is far and some fast runners might have pretty poor stamina so they won’t even keep up with a team for 5 miles even the fastest in a city might have only ok endurance. Bolt couldn’t have been the fastest runner if he did cross country he worked on mostly speed to win. But longer sprints are fine too he hardly ever ran far. That is bad for fast runners and that even will mess up your timeline as a pro sprinter. If you want to be faster football and basketball are fine teams for off season. I like to run at top speed usually and run long distances once in a while and play other sports.

    • @baby-ei3pp
      @baby-ei3pp 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      richard brown Because jumpers should be working on increasing their veritical in the offseason and not running longer distances. It's not a bad thing to go on long runs once or twice a week if you're a sprinter/jumper, but if you're trying to maximize your top end speed and or vertical jump, the weight room, plyos, and sprint workouts would be a lot more beneficial.
      If you're a jumper check out a channel called 'Overtimeathletes' , they aren't track related like Jaret's videos but they have great tips for increasing your vertical.

    • @AsianNIGMA
      @AsianNIGMA 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      richard brown sprinters and jumpers directly correlate, when you're doing your run through you wanna reach top speed within 100ft and be as explosive as possible, cross country does none of that

    • @ynrich68
      @ynrich68 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Logan Graham okay I understand , and yeah I'm a jumper and a sprinter but my coach has me doing cross country to work on my leg strength so I can be more explosive , and for me being a first time xc runner I just ran a 3.1 mile in 20 minutes and 27 seconds the thing is I'm really fast and have a lot of endurance and can jump my ass off and this is my senior year so I'm pushing for the scholarship as well , I can say I'm just naturally talented and I don't really see any decrease of my speed or jumping .
