    I wear an ADV helmet because going through automated carwashes hit you in the face...really helps with deflecting those big blue brushes....everything comes out in the wash.

    I used to ride (strictly off road) in the Northeast. If you don't like replacing face shields & goggle lenses, those peaks come in handy to protect your "optics" from branches on the trail.

    I have a Scorpion AT-950 and really like it. It is noisier than the more street oriented full-face helmets that I've had but all-in-all I much prefer it. I removed the peak after about the first year or so. On a long trip I noticed my neck was really getting fatigued due to the wind pulling on the peak so much. Haven't put it back on since and honestly don't miss it much. Probably one of the best things I did with it, which came from your cold-weather riding tips, was to get the snowmobile shield for it. Hasn't fogged up once since I switched out the visor!

    Honestly, I use my peak to deflect branches so they don't scratch my visor when riding on trails all the time more than blocking roost.
    But I agree that you don't "need it" but they are nice.

      @49Roadmaster ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Was coming to mention deflecting branches as well. BUT if you are too slow to duck you can tear the visor off and/or possibly do an unscheduled dismount.

      That’s the Vizor that deflects the branches, which prevents scratches to the face shield.

    • @2fastnlight
      @2fastnlight ปีที่แล้ว

      Most helmet polycarbonate shields have scratch resistant coatings, and the branches we are all willing to ride "through" are generally small enough to be composed of material softer than our faceshields. They can leave a veggie smudge, but that wipes off. The faceshield can shrug off small branches better than any helmet peak. In fact its engineered and designed to protect your face from such impacts, while the visor is only engineered to make you feel cool.

    Just ordered me a Schuberth E2 because I wanted a peak and wasn’t going to give up a modular helmet. So many times on the road the suns glare is just more than I can manage. I’m extremely sensitive to light and blue light in particular so blocking part of the sky is a benefit to me worth paying for.

    I love your description of how ADV helmets were created. But yeah, the fit is way more important than any 'features'. That extra bit on the top is there to deflect stones if the vehicle in front of you throws them up and you can get your chin down. I personally use a regular off road helmet if I’m going primarily off road. I wear a road helmet otherwise.

    I have been riding ADV off-road with a Shoe Neotec for many years. I recently bought a helmet with a peak. I find the peak really useful as a sun shade so I can actually see when riding into the sun. I also find the peak annoying in strong winds.

    Splendid video as usual. I'd add that one of the main advantages of the peak (besides those mentioned) is to deviate branches whilst riding on Singletracks, so you don't get your visor smashed by them. It comes from Mountain biking. I do agree that they are less than optimal for street riding.

    Good points. I actually went the opposite direction than norm.
    I have a Shoei Neotec used while riding my Goldwing, and after I bought an Arai XD-4 helmet to use on my DR650 found that I liked using that Arai dual sport helmet on my Goldwing. It’s quieter, has better airflow, is lighter, and the peak does not catch air and does allow me to tip my head a bit on occasion and block the low sun. Maybe I look like I’m ready to take my Wing off road - now that would be a sight!
    Of course, opinions on helmets will be as varied as opinions on motorcycle choice - which keeps things interesting.

    While I don't often end up behind roost happy friends, the blocking the sun aspect when driving into a setting sun is a very real advantage (that I lack, using my street helmets offroad).

  • @markchalloner5883

    I quit using them a while back. None of them fit my head shape very well without modification, and being on the interstate around big trucks, or just riding highway speeds on a windy day sucks, as the peak tends to grab the wind and jerk your neck if you look to the side. I also ride street bikes, so it's nice not to have to spend double on helmets. If I ever get another dualsport or enduro, I'll just get a full on dirt helmet.

    A few years ago, I did part of the Idaho BDR with a Schubert C2 street helmet and vowed I'd never do any off-road without a peaked helmet. The Schubert was fine for most situations with one big exception. We were in a fairly dusty section and my visor had picked up some of that dust. When the sun hit my dusty visor. Much like driving into the sun with a dirty windshield on a car, I was completely blind. Being able to shade my visor with the peak would have made all the difference. I now only ride while wearing my Aria XD4. I'll never go back to a peak less helmet.
    I'll add another problem with the Schubert C2 was dust getting into the pull down visor and the hinge of helmet. The dust destroyed the mechanism in the pulldown visor and the lift up part of the helmet got harder and harder to operate during the trip.

    I spent a lot of time trying to find a peak visor helmet that doesn’t wind buffet when going down the highway on my 890 Adventure with no results. Very few things irritates me more than blurred vision while at speed. I finally settled on a Nolan modular with no peak and really like it. When I have the sun in my face I drop down the built in sun visor and that makes things tolerable. I have hit the point in life where I would rather be comfortable at the risk of looking like a dork.

    Last season I rode gravel/forest adventures with road helmet that I bought for my moto licence training. It was good, It did the job... but I want new experience, less noise, better ventilation, better vision, better crash absorbtion... I love my new Klim Krios Pro :)

  • @derekneu6524
    @derekneu6524 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've found this-buffeting sucks, and on my adv helmet, the visor comes off easy. If I'm taking mostly roads, I pull it off. HUGE difference, nearly no buffering. My clear faceshield automatically darkens the brighter it gets, so the sun isn't much of an issue unless its setting directly in front of me. When we get to the trails, pop the visor back on. One helmet takes care of road and trail.

Wish I would have thought to take the visor off.

    If you have a dirtbike helmet already, I say skip the dualsport helmets and get a modular street helmet. On a dirt heavy day, wear the mx helmet. On a dualsport day, you get the comfort of a street helmet until hitting the trail then just pop the chinbar for increased airflow.

    The ""shading" issue on a Transition lense is really a non issue for me. After you flip the lense down It takes maybe 10-20 seconds for the lense to fully "transition" and the shading to totally dissapear. I mention this only because I have heard other youtubeers say the same thing. Transitional lenses, altough more expensive, are a plus for me when purchasing a helmet. Of course, temporary shading very well could be distracting if you flipped the lense down just prior to attempting a froward 360 into a Superman! 🤪 I enjoyed the video and keep up the good work.

    • @L--Z
      @L--Z ปีที่แล้ว

      If they take that long to change, Transitions visors sound hard to deal with if your ride takes you thru a tunnel.

    • @itsFritz
      @itsFritz ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@L--Z No doubt there are a few situations where the transition lense is annoying, but for me the convenience of the transitional lense oughtweighs the annoyances. I wear prescription glasses under my helmet, so flipping open the visor when going I to a tunnel works for me. Take care.

    That's a very good overview. I use a bell star street helmet for most of my riding,although I do have a bell adventure helmet also. If it's mainly street and especially high speed meaning above 50, street helmets are the way to go. The ADV helmet even with a visor remove is no match. However, if you're riding a lot off-road and are huffing and puffing, you'll love an ADv helmet. It helps against that claustrophobic feeling. On cool humid mornings, the ADV helmet has much less fogging.

  • @49Roadmaster
    @49Roadmaster ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You made another great video. And a timely one, as I am cleaning and inspecting my helmets for the upcoming season.
    My first concern, for any helmet, is if the helmet fits. Having a 7-5/8 Profile shaped head very few helmets, or hats for that matter, fit me. So fit first, fashion and even function are very distant seconds.
    For example, in any of the HJC line of helmets I wear a 3XL and those still do not fit front to back well and the side to side I can almost fit both my hands in the sides. (I think my parents put me in a vise when I was a baby)
    Presently I use an Arai Signet-X XL street helmet and a Arai XD4 XL. My take? The XD4 is noticeably quieter than the Signet-X and now my helmet of choice both on the street and adventure riding. The nice thing about the XD4, with the twist of 4 screws, you can remove the peak if you need the fashion when on a street bike. Personally, I keep the peak on all the time as it seems to help with glare thought the day.

    If you're shopping for an ADV helmet, try shopping in the daytime, because if the peak cannot be adjusted to block the sun, then it is probably completely useless and you should consider another helmet or even a street helmet.

  • @hungwasson1399
    @hungwasson1399 ปีที่แล้ว

    I scanned through the comments and didn't see discussion on the primary advantage of peaked helmets, which makes them far from a fashion statement to me. Riding offroad is often very dusty business. That cloud of dust settles on your face shield or your goggles. What happens when sunlight hits that dust? Whiteout! Contrast drops to zero, and vision goes out the window! How do you restore vision when your hands are busy and you're diving into a corner or dealing with a rock garden? Tilt your head! The shadow cast by the peak over your goggles or face shield instantly restores contrast so you can see what you're dealing with! If my helmet didn't have a peak, I would have plowed into a tree, hit a boulder or dropped into ravine on multiple occasions. I'm a fan, and I'll stick to peaked ADV or MX helmets when riding offroad in dusty conditions.

  • @FluxExplorer
    @FluxExplorer ปีที่แล้ว

    Just like adv bikes, adv helmets are a compromise.
    The chin bar being further away from your face than on a road helmet allows you to sip on a hydration tube a heck of a lot easier.
    Most adv helmets vent far better than a road helmet but not as good as a dirt lid.
    Once you go with the wide field of vision of an adv, going back to a full face road bucket feels claustrophobic.
    I prefer to just take my sun visor off if a ton of highway miles are on the menu.

  • @mr.shannon6137
    @mr.shannon6137 ปีที่แล้ว

    Started out with a street helmet it got old, switched to adv (scorpion) helmet. My next helmet will be a modular street. I hate looking threw a windscreen, so leave mine in its lowest setting most of the time. At speeds over 60mph, it's like having a gorrilla grab and yank the hell of of it. Extremely loud. Extremely cold in cold weather. Water goes in past my neck in the rain. This is a snug fitting helmet.
    If I spent more time in the dirt than asphalt my opinion would probably be a lot different.

  • @rossjohnson2151
    @rossjohnson2151 ปีที่แล้ว

    Most important thing about a helmet is that it fits properly. It should be snug enough that you can wear it riding without the strap buckled. The strap is just there to keep the helmet in place after the first impact. Better the helmet is too tight than too loose. They break in and loosen up so buy them snug. But I bought a Mips helmet recently and it is REALLY tight so be aware if you mail order one.
    And goggles with a visor is the only way to go off-road IMHO. A shield get dusty and blocks air flow and they're expensive as hell for a good helmet and they scratch with virtually any contact. Goggles stop dust. I just carry a wet sponge in a ziplock and a cloth diaper for cleaning everything.

    I've just put 4000 Km on a LS2 Explorer and I have this to say. I'd been looking for a modular helmet but was warned off them by some French dude who tested a bunch out and said the modular design means a 2 point anchoring system for the peak, i.e. more movement at high speed. The whole-face helmets are 3-point anchored and thus stiffer. I live in Central Spain which is hot in summer - really hot. This helmet is the best vented and most comfortable lid I've ever owned, and I've been through 32 years of Shoeis and Arais. Further, yes, there is some noise from the peak at very high motorway speeds, but less than on my modular Nolan N90-3 touring helmet without a peak. What is the only problem with this helmet? I can only ride it on my Adventure bike or I look a twat!

    After more than fifty years of riding I added a relatively inexpensive Canadian designed CKX Atlas peaked “adventure” helmet to my collection. Its quick detach peak can also be adjusted for air flow on the run and it has a well designed fold-down/quick detach mouth filter. Buy some gaffers tape and put 2 rows across the top of the shield when riding into a bright sun just tilt your head down and the gaffers tape will block the sun. You can take the tape on and off the face shield and it doesn't leave any residue.

    Have you ever driven north in June/July to places like Juneau, Haines or Skagway? In the evenings? Ever? Try it! And then say it again...
    My country (Estonia) is at the same latitude as these cities. The peak is very useful in the evenings. Sunscreen doesn't help.

    I think you understated just how bad a peaked helmet can be on the highway. If you're bombing down the slab at 80+ mph for any significant amount of time, the extra drag and tendency to turn your head gets really exhausting. I've taken to using my street helmet, or removing the peak off my ADV helmet unless I'm going to for sure be riding in brush.

      That's the VISOR causing the problem. No idea what this "peak" thing is that people keep talking about. Maybe it's on overseas term. In the US and Canada we have a Visor and a Faceshield. on our helmets.

    You can't prevent your brain from shaking/rattling around your skull like a pea in tin can.regardless of how expensive, fitted even with no damage from a crash.

    A good adv helmet with removable peak is a good alternative to not needing one helmet for on road and another for off-road and save some money that way.

    Good videos for years now, thanks. Visor also ducks under small tree branches and brush in the Mid Atlantic US region. The visor, when it puts a once clean shield that has lots of mud spatter in the shade allows the dirty shield to seem very good, No visor and a dirty shield into the sun is just terrible. On the road without a visor, don't you hold your hand up to shade your visor now and then in really bad sun ahead?

  • @steveh545

    actually, to complete the thought process behind your title, you should have included MX helmets. Can an MX helmet be used for ADV? It can of course, depending on the speed/terrain you ride, and if your willing to accept the compromises for when you're not on a single track or slow dirt road...

  • @whitedrguy6503
    @whitedrguy6503 ปีที่แล้ว

    One major thing you did not mention is that a peaked helmet normally has a wider opening at the front for the fitting of goggles, goggles become important on dirt roads because of dust.
    Every time I hit a dirt road I always put on my goggles because the last thing I want is to end up with my eyes full of dirt and dust.
    So just to confirm that wearing an ADV helmet with a peak is beneficial is not a myth, it is highly adventitious.

    I am thinking of buying an ADV helmet because its not possible to use a hydro pack from kriega when touring with a normal full face helmet. I have to stop every time to use it. I guess with these helmets it should be possible to feed the water tube through the visor opening?

    Story time.
    I was riding in the spring mountains of Nevada by myself and I came around a corner to fast while standing and hot a large rock. I got it at probably 15-20 MPH on a cliff ledge while standing. When I hit the rock the bike stopped moving and I was thrown forwards probably 10-15 feet and landed on my back where my helmet hit a jagged rock with the full weight of me (A 285 lb man) being thrown forwards and downwards. My helmet was just a every day normal 50$ helmet that was DOT certified and was a 3/4 with a shield so I could enjoy the wind. The helmet sustained nothing more than a slight indent barely noticeable and a paint chip. My hands and knees were a different story. I wore on jeans and a jean jacket to the mountains and I cut my hand pretty bad and scraped and bruised my legs and shoulders and back. All of this was from 10-15 MPH. The lesson I learned that day was wear the proper gear and that any helmet that is certified is better than no helmet at all
