    It always felt like to me Alice in chains blended classic rock and blues and alternative in such an interesting way I haven't seen since

    It’s crazy just listening to those chords-it sounds different. Layne Staley’s voice added such a dimension to those songs...his voice put a definite vibe and stamp on those songs. Alice In Chains were so unique-remember hearing We Die Young as the first song from them...was blown away. Jerry Cantrell’s vocals worked so well with Layne’s voice. Thanks for the lesson-your selection of songs was cool!

    To me this stuff is so much heavier then shit today. I'm glad I discovered metal in the 90s, perfect timing.
    Today: 8 or 9 string guitars, tuning down 5 steps, over technical, over produced....it's all so unflattering and boring.
    It's like the feel has been removed, and is synthetic.
    Sad.

      7 strings are nice because detuning with a Floyd and changing tunings sucks. Anything over 7 strings is pushing it.

    I saw them open for Van Halen in Portland and the Rose Garden in early 1992 awesome show. It was the last show with Van Halen and they had Van Halen come up and jam with them. At least Eddie and Michael.

    It’s Interesting that “ Would” was first released on the soundtrack to the movie Singles. I believe the video coincided that release. I remember seeing the vid and running out to the record store to find. that tune but couldn’t find it until a store clerk found it was on that soundtrack. ( remember when we went to Record stores? Miss those days). Some other good tunes on the soundtrack, but played Would over and over. Then Dirt came out and it occupied the next few months musically. I was in my my early twenties. Took me a bit to adapt from the 80s sound, but I fell in love with AIC , Pearl Jam, mother love bone. Soundgarden of course. The Temple of The Dog album is also a masterpiece. ✌️

    Great stuff! (as usual). I was in Seattle in the mid/late 80's and saw a lot of the bands grow into national acts. AIC was actually from Tacoma (30 miles south), and were a bit more metal than the others at first. Soundgarden was really the king of the scene, and set the bar high for others to try and reach. Green River eventually split into Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone, which became Pearl Jam. Nirvana was a little late to the scene, coming from Aberdeen, but people knew they were different, and special. For AIC, they were first marketed as an alt metal band with Facelift, but when the Seattle scene started blowing up, they evolved into an even more sludgy/grungy sound (Dirt). Jerry Cantrell definitely had some strong ties to the classics (Hendrix), but also Sabbath for the sludgy, downtuned riffs. (Soundgarden also really drew Sabbath and Zeppelin). Keep up the great work!

    • @RobVanDelay_WholeFnContest
      @RobVanDelay_WholeFnContest ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey whatsup! I heard it was actually Kim Thayil who taught Jerry how to downtune his guitar and the rest was history!

    Appreciate back to back vids on my two favorite bands, VH and AIC. Dirt is fantastic from start to finish. One of the few perfect albums. Cantrell's genious is creating an immersive experience that transports the listener into another world, much like The Floyd.

    I am 47 years old. I am so glad my youth was the 80s and 90s We had so much fun. Actually meeting each other that shows concerts and parties actually interacting physically. I remember the car chains 50 cars long going out to the middle of nowhere where everybody would meet and party our asses off. I'm from Texas and it was a lot like the movie Dazed and Confused. That movie seem to reflect the way it was growing up more than any movie I've ever seen And music was a really really big deal back then. Man, we had a lot of fun!!

    I actually love that booing story more than any other AIC story I've heard. It shows you the power of music in both directions ! People wanted to hear Van Halens music, got mad, then heard a song to spoke to their feelings and exultation ensues. Perfectly engineered, it would have been my favorite show ever played in that band. (unplugged is god mode and untouchable, obviously that is not included)
    E: obi wan was smart, from a certain point of view, those boos really demonstrated the love and power inherent to music

    I’m actually a big fan of Facelift. Ain’t Like That is a killer riff! Dirt is great too, but some songs are just too depressing to me on multiple repeats. Anyway, great lesson as always! Only criticism would be inclusion of Man In The Box...most guitarists that follow you probably already know it and AIC has so many other tunes with dark and nifty chords. Kudos to Van Halen having them as an opener back in the day. I’m sure Eddie had a say in that selection.

    • @swedejohanson7739
      @swedejohanson7739 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael 3:15 agreed. Confusion is my favorite song off Facelift, but Ain’t like that is a killer ass riff! I go back and forth between facelift and Dirt on which one I like more. They’re both masterpieces

    Alice in Chains is not grunge! They even say it themselves. They are a hard rock band and Layne Staley said he really hated how they got blended into the grunge movement. Alice in Chains is one of the greatest bands. The way Layne's sad voice meshes with Jerry's melodic rising voice is goosebump-inducing.

      I was very lucky to get the chance to see the Led Zep reunion show at O2, that was an amazing gig to attend! No. 3 was Prince of all people... Not the sort of music I would play at home but live he was something special. During the show he played almost every instrument and was especially good on drums. Very underrated guitar player too, if you haven't seen his solo on GG Weeps Harrison tribute worth watching on TH-cam! 🤓👍 The look on Tom Petty's is classic as Prince does his thing.... 😂

      @@NJAY104 I was one of the 3 million people who applied for tickets in the Led Zep Lottery for the O2 gig that failed. Definitely would have loved to have gone. I was just a bit too young to see Zeppelin play before Bonham died. I saw Page play a couple of times with the Firm and he came on for an encore one of the times I saw Plant play on his solo outings. As good as it was, it wasn't Zeppelin. I never saw Prince play live, however, I was at a night club in the West End in the early 90s, Browns (the night club not the infamous strip club), I'd dropped an acid tab and was dancing on their tiny dance floor. A Prince song came on, I was dancing away, turn round, and who is standing no more than ten feet away, with a huge bodyguard each side? The man himself. All I thought was, much dance better :) There were lots of celebs there that night, Bjork, Seal, George Michael, Mica Paris (who I chatted to and was lovely) and I got elbowed by Naomi Campbell when I was trying to get to the gents :) Those were the days for sure. Prince was great and you're right, he was a very talented musician.

    I saw them open up the clash of the titans tour with anthrax,megadeth and slayer. They were getting booed there as well, who knew they would go on to be bigger than the bands they were opening for.

    I too, saw them open for Van Halen on 1991. Same results. Boos but this time Layne Staley got pissed and threw his mic stand into the crowd. Then our car got towed when we left. Shitty night.

    Also dig on some Mad Season if you appreciate yourself some Layne Staley.
