It's crazy that Marvel got Robert Redford to star in a movie inspired by 70s spy thrillers. It's even crazier the most of the audience is too young to appreciate how cool that is...

Also the Russo Bros. first Directoral effort for Marvel. IIRC in interviews they said they had a film in mind that had a tone that they wanted to set for this film. That was Three Days of the Condor...a 1970's Spy/Paranoia Thriller starring...Robert Redford.

The russo brothers nailed it so hard on this one that marvel gave them the keys to the whole franchise.
They did the next cap movie and both final avengers movies.
They went from comedic directors to the guys who make billions for marvel

Cap legit has lived through some hard times. Thats the beauty of his character. He stops being simply a cog in the machine and begins to question things. It’s never as black and white and that’s what I love about his character esp coming from his background. We often never question authority or those in power whether something is right or wrong. Thats one of the reason why Cap’s franchise is one of my favs from the MCU. You can see the nuances that everyone isn’t what it seems even if it’s supposedly from the good side. Phenomenal film series imo.

That reel-to-reel data tape. That's how large amounts of data were saved on old mainframe computers. I worked in a university computer center in the early 90s and one of the jobs of the data librarian was to track down owners of old tape reels from the 60s and 70s.

This movie honestly had some of the best character introductions / developments that we've seen in the MCU so far. Diving more into Cap's struggles, seeing Bucky back, Fury as a total bad-ass in the field, and meeting Falcon too. Even Cap and Black Widow's chemistry in this is soooo good. They're so much fun in scenes together. Great reaction!

One of the things that I love about this movie is how some of the plot lines are taken from real events. The scene where Fury is showing the helicarriers for use in Operation Insight is reminiscent of the NSA's listening in on our phone conversations during the war on terror which was controversial at the time this film was made. Also, Shield absorbing Hydra's ex-operatives and tactics is a call back to our history when the US government's (CIA) was absorbing ex-Nazi operatives and tactics in "Operation Paper Clip" in the Cold War against the Soviets.

The title actually has a double meaning. Besides referencing Bucky, "The Winter Solider" is also a reference to the works of Thomas Paine, an 18th century writer who supported the American Revolution. In his writings, he wrote about "the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot" (i.e. people who only stand up when it's safe and easy), as opposed to a "winter solider" (someone who fights, even when things are hard).
In that sense, Captain American *IS* the Winter Solider.

I'm not sure when you plan on watching the MCU shows or how many of them you plan on watching, (there's a TON of them) but here's a little guide on these shows.
    Series 0: One-Shots
Includes: The Consultant, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer, Item 47, Agent Carter, and All Hail the King
Description: The Marvel One-Shots are actually short films of varying length, with one being included with the blu-ray releases of every movie from Thor 1 to Thor 2. They're not really necessary to watch, but if you DO plan on watching them, the sooner the better.
    Series 1: Marvel Heroes
Includes: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (7 seasons), Agent Carter (2 seasons), and Inhumans (1 season)
Description: Marvel Heroes is a series of 3 shows that first aired on ABC. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has a few connections to the Phase 2 movies, but other than that the Marvel Heroes series of shows is mostly disconnected from the movies, meaning at this point you can watch these shows whenever you feel like it.
    Series 2: The Defenders Saga
Includes: Daredevil (3 seasons), Jessica Jones (3 seasons), Luke Cage (2 seasons), Iron Fist (2 seasons), The Defenders (1 season), and The Punisher (2 seasons)
Description: The Defenders Saga is a series of 6 R-rated shows that first aired on Netflix. They cross over with each other in a similar way to how the movies cross over with each other, but they have very little connection to said movies, meaning that you can watch them at any time.
    Series 3: Young Adult
Includes: Runaways (3 seasons), and Cloak & Dagger (2 seasons)
Description: This series, named after its target audience, consists of 2 shows that weren't originally planned to cross over with each other. Runaways first aired on Hulu, while Cloak & Dagger first aired on Freeform. Once again, they have very little connection to the movies, so you can watch them at any time.
    Series N/A: Adventure into Fear
    Includes: Helstrom (1 season)
Description: Adventures into Fear was supposed to be a series of darker shows, however the series was shortlived and is no longer considered to be a part of the MCU, so you can watch it whenever you feel like it. Its only show, Helstrom, first aired on Hulu.
    Series 4: Main Series
Includes: WandaVision (1 season), The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (1 season), Loki (2 seasons), What If...? (3 seasons), Hawkeye (1 season), Moon Knight (1 season), Ms. Marvel (1 season), She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (1 season), Secret Invasion (1 season), Echo (1 season), Agatha All Along (1 season), and many other future projects
Description: These shows start during Phase 4 and are closely tied to the movies, meaning you will want to watch them at the time they came out in relation to the movies. They all first aired on Disney+.
