It's crazy that Marvel got Robert Redford to star in a movie inspired by 70s spy thrillers. It's even crazier the most of the audience is too young to appreciate how cool that is...
Also the Russo Bros. first Directoral effort for Marvel. IIRC in interviews they said they had a film in mind that had a tone that they wanted to set for this film. That was Three Days of the Condor...a 1970's Spy/Paranoia Thriller starring...Robert Redford.
The russo brothers nailed it so hard on this one that marvel gave them the keys to the whole franchise. They did the next cap movie and both final avengers movies. They went from comedic directors to the guys who make billions for marvel
When this film came out it set a new gold standard for superhero movies, I'll never forget walking out of the theater KNOWING I had just seen something that had changed the whole game.
I love the bromances Steve has with Bucky and Sam. You don't see that very often. Bros just being genuinely good and solid bros for each other. "I'm with you til the end of the line." "On your left."
Cap legit has lived through some hard times. Thats the beauty of his character. He stops being simply a cog in the machine and begins to question things. It’s never as black and white and that’s what I love about his character esp coming from his background. We often never question authority or those in power whether something is right or wrong. Thats one of the reason why Cap’s franchise is one of my favs from the MCU. You can see the nuances that everyone isn’t what it seems even if it’s supposedly from the good side. Phenomenal film series imo.
Fantastic reaction as always. I am loving this journey. Enjoy the ride because THIS is the point where the MCU gets really good and Phase 3 will blow your mind. Things are really going to start coming together now.
"What are those, recording devices?" That reel-to-reel data tape. That's how large amounts of data were saved on old mainframe computers. I worked in a university computer center in the early 90s and one of the jobs of the data librarian was to track down owners of old tape reels from the 60s and 70s.
This movie honestly had some of the best character introductions / developments that we've seen in the MCU so far. Diving more into Cap's struggles, seeing Bucky back, Fury as a total bad-ass in the field, and meeting Falcon too. Even Cap and Black Widow's chemistry in this is soooo good. They're so much fun in scenes together. Great reaction!
The spy thriller vibe of The Winter Soldier gives it a unique vibe in the MCU, for me it’s one of the top movies below Infinity War and Endgame.I think you’re going to love Guardians of the Galaxy.
Good as always, Kali. yeah, the filthy image of Kai Leng will be remembered for a lifetime. btw, I haven't noticed Stark targeted in the A-tower at 31:19 till now
One of the things that I love about this movie is how some of the plot lines are taken from real events. The scene where Fury is showing the helicarriers for use in Operation Insight is reminiscent of the NSA's listening in on our phone conversations during the war on terror which was controversial at the time this film was made. Also, Shield absorbing Hydra's ex-operatives and tactics is a call back to our history when the US government's (CIA) was absorbing ex-Nazi operatives and tactics in "Operation Paper Clip" in the Cold War against the Soviets.
@@MrIcelander what was controversial was NSA's listening in on all phone conversations of the population, not the war on terror itself. Any government that listens in on their own citizen's phone conversations or hacks into their cell phones is an invasion of privacy. It's the same as ransacking your home for evidence without proof or a warrant, just because they think you are a suspected terrorist.
@@MrIcelander the controversial part was not the war on terror but the government listening in on phone conversations and hacking the cell phones of the American population. Any government that listens in on phone conversations on its own citizens without their permission is committing an act of invading their privacy. Some people might be OK with that and say that it's the price for keeping the country safe from attacks, but I bet Cap would not be willing to " get with the program".
The most under appreciated part of this film is when Steve visits Sam at the VA. It’s sad that Sam asks Steve what makes him happy, and he doesn’t know.
Also, it isn't even remotely connected as a lot of fans like to pretend it is. As it is right now, they haven't referenced or acknowledged any of the events in the show, ever, in the movies. Even doubly so after re-adding Daredevil to the MCU.
@@ShieldVids Give what time? Lmao they have ignored it even after all of this stuff that's been bombing. It never has and never will officially be part of the MCU period. Because the timeline it was supposed to take place in has long come and gone.
@@StopReadingMyNameOrElse Daredevil JUST came back after years. His show has not even aired yet. Shield can come back just like defenders characters will return eventually. It and Daredevil were MCU when they came out. It was official. It was only after Daredevil was cancelled that people started saying it wasn't.
This film changed everything. Specifically, while watching the Nick Fury chase, I felt the MCU rise to another level, and it took me by surprise. I like the first half of this movie better than the second, but it's still in the top three all-time MCU. It was a watershed moment.
Steve Rogers, Loki and Rocket Racoon are definitely my favorite characters of the MCU, all of them are so well written and the arcs that they have through all the movies are a 10/10, i cant say much without spoiling, so you have to watch them all first 😅 Winter Soldiers is still my top 1
Cool! This is a pretty good movie, even more the turn of events, how you realize Shield itself is stained in its mix with hydra. And replicates, like you said, how something made with good means, some people always would give it a evil use. I can't wait for the next movie, keep going kali, was amazing to rewatch this movie alongside you
This movie is still one of my all-time favorite movies, let alone MCU movies. Jackman's score is one of my all-time faves too! The line "Shall we play a game?" is from an old Matthew Broderick film called "War Games" - it doesn'r really hold up that well, but it's still a fun watch.
This is the best MCU entry period. It's on par with everything else in terms of spectacle and leagues above in terms of maturity of the script, camera work and narrative. Even such dull plank of wood like Antony Mackie delivers some charisma in this
The scene where Steve and Sam are on the bridge before storming S.H.I.E.L.D, they were talking about Bucky. Steve said that even when he had nothing, he had Bucky - that is loyalty, then they had the flashback to Bucky saying he was going to join the army and Steve said he would be fine by himself, then Bucky said "I am with you till the end of the line"; as you noticed in the helicarrier, that line stopped Bucky from hitting Steve.
"What are those things? Recording Devices?" Kinda...that whole room is basically a 1960's-70's layout for a supercomputer...the reels of Magnetic Tape (large) had a similar role to a hard drive or USB stick today, data storage. Just way less efficient that today's data storage devices.
Cap and Bucky were like Batman and Robin in the comics. So Bucky's death was shocking. It was even more shocking when he came back as the Winter Soldier.
The title actually has a double meaning. Besides referencing Bucky, "The Winter Solider" is also a reference to the works of Thomas Paine, an 18th century writer who supported the American Revolution. In his writings, he wrote about "the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot" (i.e. people who only stand up when it's safe and easy), as opposed to a "winter solider" (someone who fights, even when things are hard). In that sense, Captain American *IS* the Winter Solider.
