Here's Why The PowerA Wireless Gamecube Controller For The Switch Surprised Me

  • The Wireless PowerA Gamecube Controller is out at the end of the month and is set up to more so compete with the Switch Pro Controller instead of the Gamecube controller on the Nintendo Switch. This controller keeps the same form factor that the original Gamecube controller had and makes the whole thing wireless through blue tooth while adding all of the necessary buttons to operate Switch games. I like what I see with this controller and I hope PowerA continues to build from this controller going forward.

Sony and Microsoft likely pay royalties to keep analog triggers on their controllers.

    I tried this controller myself from a friend. If you want the exact shape of the controller, this isn't for you. It may sound OCD-ish but when I felt it, the analog sticks felt weird compared to the original controller, the grips don't feel flush for the hands compared to the original controller and it feels a bit sharp when pressing down the triggers from what I can remember. If you want a wireless solution from the switch to yourself easily but use the same controller you're used to, the 8bitdo wireless adapter is your best bet, even though you are using the wire from your controller

    I have 3 of Power A's controllers. 1 is a standard wireless replacement for the Pro controller, 1 is a standard wired replacement of the Pro controller and then the last one is a wired version of this controller and I think they did a slight change to some of the internals after they got feed back because I got mine relatively recently (in 2020) and the ZL and ZR triggers now have basically no travel. The standard wireless controller is nice (has Zelda print on it) and it's a enhanced version so it has 3 additional buttons with one being a program button and the other 2 being the programmable buttons and it has motion control support so you can use it for BOTW's motion functions as well as motion driving in Mario Kart 8. The wired standard controller is an older model that I got with my switch around the time this video came out (a couple of months before) because I got Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate and I hate the Joycons and it's held up over the year and x amount of months I've had it and still works fine. The wireless stuff now syncs up with bluetooth on a PC now easily compared to when this came out as I use my switch pro controllers for Wii games that supported the Classic Pro controller on Dolphin. I have no real issues other than I do notice the lack of the analogue functionality at times and it makes me a little sad that it's not a perfect experience but I get to use a controller that is close enough and is decent quality. Had the standard wired controller since August 2018 (got it with my switch and BOTW), had the wireless version since November of 2019 (on sale due to Black Friday) and then the Gamecube variant since February of this year. A friend did get the same wired controller as me and he's getting stick drift but idk how well he took care of it considering he kept some old PC parts in a ziploc bag (made me cringe to see it, that poor dead CPU).

    A lot of people are talking about their controller drifting shortly after purchase. I've had mine since launch and have over 400 hours into using it for smash and various other games and mine is still in perfect condition function wise. The only problem I've had is that the rubber on the left stick started to get rubbed off. I think I've had to replace the batteries maybe 6 times over the past year and a half? So battery life is decent. The only time I would ever think to not use this controller is when I needed to use the shoulder buttons a lot, like in Ni No Kuni. They just has a lot of travel and isn't ideal for something like that, but other wise is was my go to.

  • @frost9681
    @frost9681 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I ordered one of these a while ago, only just got it a couple of days ago. I know the reviewer on this channel wasn't a big fan of the triggers, but I really like them. They're super responsive, but at the same time it is nearly impossible to accidentally hit them. I play smash competitively, and on several occasions I have lost an entire game by accidentally hitting the triggers of the joycons/pro controller whilst in the air, causing a lethal air dodge. The fact that these have so much space to push in before clicking is really helpful, and it isn't inconvenient at all.
    Beyond that, I'll leave a little review for anyone interested.
    The controller is super comfortable, with a very similar feel to holding a normal GC controller. The buttons are all very responsive, without being as sensitive as the joycon/pro controller buttons (that is, you can run your finger along with a decent amount of force without pushing the buttons in, unlike the Joycon/pro controller). There is very low input lag - Seeing little-to-no difference between your average GC controller. In fact, its likely faster due to the fact that it doesn't need an adapter. The extra bumper is nice if you want to play with an aerial reverse layout, but it isn't super helpful otherwise. It has all the usual benefits of a GC controller, such as ridged analog stick circles (or rather octogon), and the smash-friendly layout. It also seems to be very durable, although I haven't had it for long so I'll update later if it dies on me.
    TL;DR. Very good alternative for a GC controller, especially for people who can't dock their switch often. If you were interested in this at all, I highly recommend it - Especially for fellow smash players (its very comfy).

    • @knealdan2mesee655
      @knealdan2mesee655 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is this Frost, the same player who plays Richter Belmont at tournaments? Also, does the controller have as much sturdiness and actuation as the classic Gamecube controller as well as being able to be charged if it runs out of power? Should it be wireless or wired?

    • @frost9681
      @frost9681 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@knealdan2mesee655 Firstly, no. I went by the username Frost before I started playing Smash, but I main Dedede/Yoshi.
      In terms of sturdiness, it feels very similar to that of a normal Gamecube controller. Keep in mind I've had it less than a week, so it could still be less durable over time than a normal GC, but as of now, it seems very similarly durable and responsive.
      It takes 2 AA batteries to run, so as long as you have batteries the power doesn't matter too much. Alternatively, you could invest in some rechargeable batteries, however, it does seem to have pretty good battery life.
      And lastly, I prefer the fact that its wireless as it has faster input. A normal GC controller needs an adapter, which adds input lag, and a USB GC controller also needs to go through the dock first, so there's a bit of added input delay as it doesn't go straight to the switch. The Power A controllers, including the Power A GC, have the fastest input speed among controllers (correct me if I'm wrong). Its only a couple of frames faster, if that, so it doesn't matter too much, but it is nice.

    • @knealdan2mesee655
      @knealdan2mesee655 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Are the buttons, C-Stick, and Directional Stick as firm as the Gamecube Controller as well? Was there also a quality with the Gamecube Controller where it allowed analog trigger presses so that it could tell when you pressed a button without completely pressing it down too? This was because I was wondering if this controller had that capability included. All in all, I like this controller as it captures the Gamecube layout with the extra pro-controller buttons no doubt, yet I am glad I can get a better understanding from someone with the controller while I am trying to match the specs and capabilities/capacities between the Power A and the regular Gamecube controller to make sure I do not jump at purchasing a game controller that only emulated the shell of a Gamecube Controller without managing to have gathered or improved on it's complete essence and qualities. I think I will try one of these.

    The wired ones are great if you want to have a couple of controllers laying around for friends, they are very good and cheap. The wireless one is a harder sell since they're so close in price to the pro controller, they also lack features the pro controller has like NFC and a very good rechargeable battery.
    If you have rechargeable AA's go for the wireless one, if not then save a bit more for a pro controller, you'll save up more going that route. Now if you want spare controllers for friends look no further than the wired ones, perfect price to performance ratio.

    I really like it when controllers use AA. I hate custom lithium batteries. Some day it's gonna run out of cycles, and when that day comes, you're gonna have trouble replacing the damn battery.
    Meanwhile you can use good LSD AA batteries, and even very long lasting (though not rechargable) lithium AA batteries. You ran out in the middle of a game? Keep a spare (like I do) and use the spare while the other ones charge. There, I don't see why people complain about xbox controllers using AA, I wouldn't want it any other way.

    • @IWasAllLikeG93
      @IWasAllLikeG93 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I feel the exact same way. Using AA batteries gives you the flexibility to use those charge packs that fit into the battery slot if that's what you want, or you can just use regular AA batteries. Plus they're future proof. I use rechargeable AA batteries, and they work for my wavebirds, wii, xbox 360, xbox one, and my older handheld systems. When the battery pack dies on my switch controllers in 10 years I won't be able to replace it nearly as easily. I applaud microsoft for sticking to AA batteries for the xbone. I hope they continue that trend in the future. We've already lost nintendo, and sony skipped straight to custom batteries with the PS3.

    • @shadeshiest22
      @shadeshiest22 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol and some day your joycons and even your switch is gonna run out of charging cycles and be docked forever.... Don't let the lipo battery's scare you, they will ALWAYS be available to order for a decent price on eBay no matter if its 20 years later someone will make them and sell them... Save money not buying batteries... LiPos these days have amazing charge rates and will only get better

    • @IWasAllLikeG93
      @IWasAllLikeG93 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shadeshiest22 The simple fact is that AA batteries are a standard so there will always be quality replacements available, but with a custom battery pack you're on a time limit for how long you can find OEM quality replacements. After Nintendo/Sony stop selling the battery packs, then you have to find alternatives that you mentioned "someone" sells, which are almost always cheap garbage that don't last nearly as long as the original battery did. Granted, the switch is kind of a special case, and is the only home gaming device currently on the market that actually NEEDS a custom battery.
      I won't deny that it's super convenient right now that I can play my switch in handheld, or use the joycons/pro controllers that are always charged and ready to go. That kind of thing is great for now, but as a retro game collector I know that stuff is not future proof. Eventually I'll have to use shitty Chinese batteries, and eventually I won't even be able to get those. Worse yet, the switch, joycons, PS3, and PS4 controllers don't even have a convenient battery door to make that replacement, they will have to be fully taken apart to replace the battery, which is not something everyone is comfortable doing. The wii u gamepad and all pro controllers so far at least have a battery door to make that easy.
      I think the best solution would be to sell the console with controllers that use AA batteries, but they should come with the battery packs that fit into the AA battery pack area as standard. That way it would be convenient for now with the rechargeable battery packs that are easily replaced by anyone, and 20 years from now when those can't be replaced by anything worth a shit, good old AA's will work just fine. That would make everyone happy without having to buy anything extra.

    13:08 Why do people want built in batteries? You have to wait for them to charge and it's a hassle to replace them when they die. I have a battery of rechargeable batteries and it's so easy to swap a AA or AAA for my devices. Plus as technology improves so does the capacity.

    I am thinking about buying the controller. Loved the gamecube controller and still think it is the best ever.
    I tried holding the powerA version but something was off and my fingers and hands were not satisfied as with a gamecube controller.
    And yes the travel for the z buttons had me confused since they do not do anything...
    But as i first stated i will buy this controller since it is a good replica maybe the best gamecube controller fit atm for the switch🤔

    • @sebastianpafpaf
      @sebastianpafpaf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I bought it and i am satisfied. This is a good gamecube replica and a good substitut until Nintendo produce and release their own updated gamecube wireless with switch buttons and upgrades for switch.
      Also 1 thing i had not thought about(but maybe should have realized myself with my gamecube and switch experience) and that no one have mentioned in all the review videos i have watched is that the YXBA(and rest of the buttons)are mapped accordingly to the pro controller but located differently😪😅
      Normal pro Gamecube Con
      X Y
      Y A B A X
      B
      this is anoying when you have played a game where B was jump and now i want to press A to jump due to gamecube memory and button placement🤔 minor thing but a re-map option could have been awesome.
      And also the Z buttons are fine even with the extra trave.🤷‍♂️

    My experience with Power A is exclusively for the PS3 so it's dated. The only issue I had for it is every controller I had (went through 5 or 6 of them throughout the PS3's life time) is that the cross, circle, square and triangle buttons would start to stick after excessive use. Basically I ruined so many of my Power A controllers for the PS3 Titan skating on Destiny.

  • @ajarizpe

    Built-in battery? Why though? Once the battery fucks up, you'd either A: have to get a new controller or B: risk messing up the controller while soldering in a new battery. Having traditional replaceable batteries guarantees the life span of any product.

  • @EODChaosWo1f

    for $50 usd it needs to have rumble and a battery pack and chargable while playing, and an easy fix for powerA to fix the triggers is to just increase the length of the rods that touch the membrain. the pro controller is $60 and has hd rumble and internal battery and can be charged while playing so really for $10 less normal rumble would be acceptable and you can see there is plenty of room for it =/ so theres no excuse unless it was $30 to $35 rrp.

In 2019, no analog triggers, no rumble/HD rumble, no NFC reader, not to mention the quality of these $50 controllers quickly deteriorated to where they feel like $15 controllers. The original GameCube controller that came out over a decade ago had analog triggers AND rumble and retailed for $20. These aren't worth the money. Seriously

    • @Hack3r91

      @@kevin_lee_music Well, no switch controller has analog triggers and no third party controller has HD Rumble, and I also can't think of any with an NFC reader. They could have plugged in a half assed rumble motor but that wouldn't have really served the purpose, I also used mine for about 60 hours and did not fall apart at all, 50 bucks is on the pricey side but this doesn't feel like a 15 dollars controller to me.
