As far as Female lead singers with male backup singers you've already reacted to Gladys Knight and the Pips Midnight Train to Georgia a while back. You might want to check out Ruby and the Romantics (Our Day Will Come) and The Essex (Easier Said Than Done--fun fact about tnem is that they were all active duty Marines when they started the group)

Actually Bonnie Pointer did two versions of this Motown classic - one in the same style as this one with a dynamic banjo solo and, the other, the disco classic you are speaking of. I actually enjoyed them both! (The Continental Four also did a cover of this song and Diana Ross and The Supremes did a version as well).
It makes me happy that you play and respect old music.
You guys would love Barbra Lewis "Hello Stranger" and "Baby I'm Yours".. She had such a unique and crystal clear voice.. I found out about her as a kid by listening to my mom's old records from when she was in High School.

Fun Fact: The song "Heaven Must Have Sent You" was written by the Motown writing team, Holland-Dozier-Holland. According to Eddie Holland: "The guy in The Elgins, Johnny Dawson, was driving for Brian and myself. He had his group on the side. He said, 'Eddie, I’m working for you guys, I’m going to the store and getting you food, can you do a song on us?' I really didn’t think too much of the song 'Heaven Must Have Sent You.' I said, “Well, what about this?” I gave it to him to appease him, I never knew the song was gonna be a hit. Next thing I knew they were flying off to Europe and they got a hit song!"
Johnny Dawson was also, (BJ) Brenda Joyce Evans adoptive father. BJ Evans was an original member of the Undisputed Truth. Check out their hit song, Smiling Faces Sometimes.
This should lead you to "Our Day Will Come" by Ruby & The Romantics, "Selfish One" by Jackie Ross, or "Come & Get These Memories" by Martha & The Vandellas, all great 60's R&B songs.

Don't think I've heard this since hearing it an an AM radio in 1966. One of the great song written by Holland, Dozier, and Holland who wrote many of the Motown hits for such artists as the Supremes (Diana Ross), Martha and the Vandellas, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, Freda Payne, and The Elgins.

I promise I was younger probably about 11 years old but I had teenage sisters, so I heard this song in this group before. What it does do is bring me back to great and wonderful times with my older sisters… They brought the music into my life!

We recently lost another 60s girl group singer. Rosa Lee Hawkins of The Dixie Cups! She was 76. Their most famous song was "Chapel of Love"!
You have to check out the Mills Brothers, Glow Worm, Be My Life’s Companion, or Cab Driver. They go back to the late 20s and we’re still performing in the 80s. Such tight harmonies you can only get from a family that grew up singing together.
Mills Brothers! Just some great standards in the Great American Songbook. There is a vid of Dean Martin jiving with them. Mills brothers are so cool, and they were cool before the popular parlance of cool.
The Mills Brothers actually played with Hugh Gibb’s band during the War in England and he introduced them to his sons . The surviving Mills actually went to his funeral

Gotta admit, I'd never heard of this group either. This was their most successful single, but they also had "Put Yourself In My Place" and "I Understand My Man". Great choice!
This has been big on the Northern Soul scene over in the UK for over 40 years, and will still fill the floor at any "northern" night or scooter rally.
The Elgins weren't all that big - this is the only song of theirs that I know. What I'll recommend as a follow up to this is an all-female Motown group, Martha & the Vandellas, as both groups have a strong female vocalist. Either "Heat Wave" or "Dancing in the Street" would be a great place to start with Martha & the Vandellas.
They also had a hit with Put Yourself In My Place.

Maybe that's not what you meant, but believe me there are many people who remember this being massive at the time, and is still a classic amongst followers of Northern Soul - check Wikipedia and many TH-cam videos for information about that dance scene which kept great acts alive here in parts of the UK

It sounds like you're challenging my statement that they weren't all that big by arguing that they had a 2nd big song (a song that peaked at #92), but an artist that has 2 big songs isn't all that big either. They certainly weren't as big as The Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, Mary Wells, The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, or The Jackson Five.

Speaking of sweet oldies, "A Thousand Miles Away" by the Heartbeats is a sweet doo-wop song from 1956, at which time I was a kid with a record player and enough pocket change to buy an occasional 45 rpm record. Oh, the memories!

"The Boy From New York City" by the Ad Libs was another group with a female lead backed up by male singers. BTW "Heaven Must Have Sent You" was re-recorded by Bonnie Pointer of the Pointer Sisters in 1979.

You hit the nail on the head there. Music doesn’t care if you black, brown, yellow or white. If your music is good everyone is going to enjoy listening to you. Music really does bring the world together. I do think too many of todays musicians try and divide with their songs instead of unite like the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s did.
They have one other great classic tune, which is "Darling Baby". Great tune, and a very sweet love song.
If you're into the love songs from the 60's, listen to any song by Bread. David Gates has such a voice.
Bread was more of a 70s group (they started in 68 if memory serves and had their first hit in 69 with It Don't Matter to Me but you are right that David Gates' voice is. amazing

I never knew the Elgins were the first to come out with this song. I always thought it was Bonnie Pointer (one of the original Pointer Sisters- before going solo) from 1979. It was a big disco hit. Either way both versions are great to listen to!!

This has to be one of my all time fave northern soul songs , please get into more northern soul it’s a fantastic genre of music and very diverse it’s very big over here in the UK , I can give so many suggestions on what to listen too as well xxx
You must remember that many or most Americans have never heard of Northern Soul, and won't realise that the Northern part refers to the North of England.
Sadly many know nothing of life outside the USA, something that does embarass those who are more widely travelled.
It has been admitted by some of the great soul acts that it was us Brits who kept their memory alive after the states had forgotten them.
This is the only song by it's title that I remember by the Elgin's & it was a favorite if mine.
Gladys Knight also had men as her back up when she first started.
There are many girl groups as well and female solo artist.

This is what I know as a beach music song. In The South we have a dance known as the "Shag". There are so many wonderful songs done by amazing artists and remade by amazing artist's. I would suggest you listen to anything by The Showmen. Later they became Chairman of The Board and General Johnson and The Chairman of The Board. There was not a finer group of singers or band members. The most famous song is "39-21-40 Shape". I love watching you kids discover what I have lived with and am glad that it will carry on long past my time because of you.

The Elgins were an American R & B vocal group, that was signed to the VIP Records label (a sister label of Motown Records). They were together from 1965 to 1967. Saundra Mallett, who became Saundra Edwards after getting married, was the lead singer. The backup singers were Robert Fleming, Johnny Dawson, Cleo "Duke" Miller, and Norman McLean (Note: only three backup singers are seen in this syndicated TV performance, which was an indication that the group was in turmoil, and about to break up). The male members of The Elgins reunited in the 1990s, and hired another female singer to be the lead singer. Saundra Mallett Edwards continued on as a solo artist at this time as well. She died in 2002.
The Elgins only released one album on VIP Records, ""Darling Baby" (1966), and a second hit single, "Put Yourself In My Place".
In 1979, Bonnie Pointer recorded a cover of "Heaven Must Have Sent You".
Wow, I’d never heard of this group before but what a great song! You guys should really check out Motown Records’ Martha and the Vandellas. Songs like Dancing in the Street, Heatwave and Jimmy Mack just make you feel good. But it’s their songs in minor keys that I love the most, like Nowhere to Run. They were like the Supremes only they didn’t get as much publicity, even though they were just as talented. I guarantee you guys will love them.

Until a few years ago I swore this was the Pointer Sisters. The Elgins was one of the groups whose members came together to make the Temptations (the other was the Primes). Motown held onto the name after the Temptations took off, and put it to use for this group. Check out Bonnie Pointer's disco version (it has banjo!) from 1979 -- she actually negotiated with Berry Gordy for the OK to record this song on her Motown debut.

All American singing has it’s roots in Louis Armstrong. There is a decidedly before and after. Many people see Louis Armstrong as a gravelly voiced old man with a handkerchief. However if you check out Dinah from 1927 you will hear what Crosby and Sinatra heard, the birth of modern American singing.

There have been some really heart-felt love songs since the '50s and '60s. For example, "Love Song" by The Cure. It's just beautiful.
You guys should definitely check out Barbra Lynn's "You'll Lose A Good Thing" from her 1966 appearance on The Beat. She not only wrote a lot of her songs, but she also played lead guitar - left handed. Very unusual for that time.

Hello from Belgium ! I am 22 and a huge fan of The Elgins and their lead singer Saundra Mallett Edwards (RIP). If you love this song, their also had a big hit with "Darling Baby". Unfortunately they weren't a big group of Motown, but I do think that they could have gone bigger with more exposure. Songs like "Love Is The Answer", "It's Gonna Be Hard Times", "All I Got" are so beautiful...
Here's one out of the box for you from the musical Showboat, which first came out in 1928. It has been sung by a lot of female singers. Take your pick, though might suggest Ava Gardner simply because of the acting and colour. It's called Can't help lovin' dat man of mine.

The Elgins were a minor Motown group, but made some great records. The lead singer is Saundra Mallett......later replaced by Yvonne Vernee.
Try their version of "Put yourself in my Place"......you will like that.
Other Motown artists that are worth checking out are Edwin Starr, The Monitors, Brenda Holloway, Kim Weston, Junior Walker & the All Stars....many more too.

Classic Motown group. By the way, Gladys Knight and Tina Turner were contemporaries of the Elgins. Gladys Knights first release, was "Letter Full Of Tears" in 1959.
