One of the first rock songs in history to incorporate and feature strings in the arrangement. As with so many great moments in rock music, that ending section was unplanned; originally they were going to fade out the track, but when Janet Vogel thought the tape was over, she adlibbed the ending that ended up on the final single. The final climax of the song with Janet Vogal soaring into the HIGH C NOTE is amazing in and of itself.
I first heard this song from the movie American Graffiti in 1973 when my aunt took me to see the first showing of the movie. I laughed at the thin belts and style back then, but they got it right. My girlfriend Philicia and I danced to this song countless times, we were in love in 1986. I have not met anyone disliking this music in person.
The Skyliners hailed from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The lead singer was Jimmy Beaumont. For another great selection by the Skyliners try "This I Swear".
NEVER got tired of this song in 60 yrs or so of listening. One of the most beautiful songs ever Jimmy Beaumont was one of the best singers ever. THIS I SWEAR is nearly as good. I know u would dig it Harri.
Great find Harri! This is one of the most beautiful doowop songs ever. Im listening to it 60 yrs. Actually I can hear this daily and still love it. Jimmy Beaumont was one of the greatest singers ever. THIS I SWEAR is very very good also.
It was great when it came out and I was young. And it s great now and I m old. This song was great from the start and it always will be. It defined it s era - true, as song s are time tunnels. Never thought I d still be listening to it 64 years later.
It's a pleasure to watch you hearing these classics for the first time. The Skyliners were very talented and their songs featured lush harmonies and arrangements. There's many more Skyliners songs to discover on youtube. I especially recommend Pennies From Heaven.
The smile that lit up throughout, oh yeah…50s Doo Wop. Just a wonderful time of music, I never tire of it. So simple, full of the feelings of the era, must’ve been a great time to be a teenager. This is my absolute favorite cover & the group is just fantastic. (Bring some more of this genre!😊)
This was a bit before my time, but when I was a young adult and modern music was no longer satisfying to me, I turned to the oldies. This was one of the songs I absolutely fell in love with, and I went out and bought the 45 rpm record as a classic re-release. Just gorgeous.
This is blue-eyed soul at it's best. I love them and the Fleetwoods. Great pick and reaction Harri. This was in "American Graffiti" and in the best rock and roll soundtrack IMO "Mischief".
Hi Harri, I love your reaction! Who wouldn't love this classic song? I believe they had difficulty selling it to a record producer due to all the "you, you, you, yous..." at the end. But why not? He doesn't have YOU< YOU< YOU...
Fantastic song by THE SKYLINERS and you said "one of the most beautiful things I heard in a long time I swear". Well, listen to "This I Swear by The SKYLINERS" and you won't be sorry that you did. I love these kind of songs and they are all that I want to listen to. ❤👍😊
I was about 12 years old when this came out and it's one of my all time favorites. Another of my favorites I always think of when I hear this is "Since I Fell For You", by Lenny Welch. It came out about a year earlier. While it's not doo-wop, it's another R&B love ballad with an extremely powerful and soulful vocal. Because of the similar titles whenever I hear one it reminds me of the other!
Arguably the greatest doo-wop ballad of the '50s. Gorgeous. There've been a number of covers with Don McLean ("American Pie") perhaps having the best known. He had a minor hit with it in 1981.
This song came out in 1959 with Jimmy Beaumont (lead), Janet Vogel (soprano), Wally Lester (tenor), Jackie Taylor (bass voice, guitarist), Joe Verscharen (baritone). I have stopped what I was doing to listen to this for almost as long. Consider Pennies From Heaven and Close Your Eyes for more sweet sounds. Thanks Harri!
Any song the Skyliners recorded is amazing, but this one is special, my girlfriend informed me she was pregnant with our daughter Katelyn, we danced to this song countless times, even with the kids laughing and making fun, but they too grew to Love this song in their own right. I am sure the band was loving it as they danced up and down the scale with their instruments! I think this was one of the first to include a string section in the arrangement of the song. Buck Ram, their manager and Jimmy Beaumont Lead vocal co-wrote the song.
Ricky Nelson covered this song with more bluesy version about 6 years later. I love this song every since I heard it in the movie American Graffiti in 1973, although this is from 1959. For me, one of the greatest records ever made.
i listen to this song almost every day. it takes me back to my early childhood. but really you are so correct, the vocal are magnificent. in the late fifties so many wonderful songs came out. it was a time of rowdy rebellion. my dad would take me down gasoline alley to see all the hotrods. i rode my first motorcycle then; an indian. i started a band just a few years later still tasting the talent of that time. no one had any inkling of what the sixties would be like but we knew the foundation had been laid and we were not disappointed.
That song was my favorite song also I was 17 years old and now I'm old and I still love it as much as I did then! Thank you so much!! Jimmy Beaumont was spectacular and passed away sadly 6 years!!!! He will and is missed!!!😂😅❤
An amazing production and performance. Love your pure joy at beholding one of the great records from the late 1950's. There are a lot of great doo-wop recordings. 'You Belong to Me,' for one. On a similar note: 'Since I Fell For You' by Lenny Welch.
This song is an absolute legend and happens to be my favorite song of the 50s. So I'm so glad that you discovered it. It's almost unbelievable that they were all only just teens when they recorded this. But then again, I suppose that the greatest vocals ever recorded really did come from teens. Just check out Brenda Lee from the early 60's or LeAnn Rimes from the 90s for assurance. Also, if you truly adore this song from The Skyliners, then please also be sure to check out Since I Don't Have You by Lenny Welch which has a very similar vibe.
The pure joy on your face is fabulous to see. It is a beautiful song…this coming from a guy who loved psychedelic rock from the 60s.. it’s in the ear of the beholder. I’m glad you took the time to behold.
My oh My, what a blast from the past. 🥰 Joe Rock composed this song in between stop lights, upset about a girl who had left him. This was the first hit single for the doo-wop group in 1958. It reached Number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100's. The beautiful strings, impeccable vocals, the ever present piano 🎹 and bass line absolutely represent a glorious time in music that should never be forgotten. I agree with you my bestie Harri, mind blown. Being 70 has some great advantages when it comes to the magical music I have loved over the years. Beautiful my friend. Great reaction Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Rock was 21 at the time. By the way, the lovely melody was written by the then 17 year old Jimmy Beaumont. Fun fact: Joe Rock's ex-girlfriend left to attend airline school and became a stewardess (this was 1958).
A friend of mine told me as he heard the song for the first time, he noticed I was keeping time with the piano, drums, violins, that he thought I was immersed with the song, I have danced many times with this song, it paid rewards as I sang to her. I still at 66 can reach all but the very last few notes, I know the lyrics by heart.
Yes, Doo-Wop music was such feel good music. I surely feel younger folks have been robbed. I loved my parents music as well as my generation's music, but then it stopped. It went from romantic, fun, and love focused to coarse, harsh, and depressing.
I was taught with song like these to slow dance with my Mom, no funny business, But those times were wonderful and I tear up remembering my Mom teaching her son to slow dance so I might be a hit with the girls!!
A true classic, Cynthia. Jimmy Beaumont could really sing. And Janet Vogel’s later life was rather tragic. Pennies From Heaven is just as good from them.
I apppreciate that you appreciate good music like I do. I am from that era being in my teens in late 50s and early 60's and got to witness many new groups with great new sounds that live to this day. Keep on discovering all the great groups that this era has to offer.
Wonderful that you found this gem and share with others here. Good music is good music and when you hear it you know it. This is my favorite song from that era. I was just a little girl but I remember and always loved this song. I recently bought the vinyl and listen whenever I want to.remember simpler times when dreaming about love was almost a much fun as being in love. And I love how much appreciation you have for it...Thank you!
Mind blowing !! Been stuck on this track for such a long long time . Couldnt wait to see your face as the song began to build , leading to the light bulb popping crescendo at the end … Try “ begging” by the 4 seasons ….
Harri you can do a life time of reactions on the great Doo Wop genre and you wont find a bad song...them early Doo Wop groups were for real..pure talent and the harmonizing was off the charts...love how your keeping the music alive.❤
When I was a very young kid, I’d mix up by this song from ‘59 with Since I Fell for You-‘63 (Lenny Welch) & I Only Have Eyes for You-‘59 (The Flamingos). [I actually loved the Art Garfunkel -75 version more ❤] All great songs to reply to!!
And there was no such thing as auto tune just reverb which creates the sound you would hear if a band is playing in a large room. Very different from vibrato, tremolo.
Harri. You shoulda been there...when it was in the air...the time period and its sweet musial sounds. It would've made you an even a better person than you already are. For me, it was all like only yesterday. I swear.
Glad you have found the wonderful sounds of The Skyliners. This song from 1959 and "This I Swear" from the same year are the highest charting songs of the group. I think Pittsburgh produced some of the better vocalists of the Doo Wop era, The Marcels, The Del Viking, Lou Christie, Bobby Vinton, The Vogues, and a few others. I hope you find time to enjoy all of them.
Midway thru I had to pause … knew I had seen way way back in ‘59 they preformed LIVE on American Bandstand and watch that 😂 .. I remember because at 5 years old my mom use to make me stop and dance The Stroll with her whenever and wherever we were when it played .. Great reaction
There's nothing like great 50's music! Thanks for the Skyliner's great hit, Harri. May I for your listening enjoyment one of my Top 10 from that wonderful era ... please give a try to "Treasure of Your Love" by Eileen Rodgers, from 1958. A great love song. Thanks for considering this one, Harri.
Wow released 1958. Love this song.
Jimmy Beaumont killed it with those high notes! Incredible
Indeed, Jimmy wasn't one in a million, he was one in a lifetime!.
This is the America 🇺🇸 I miss and long for every day 🛩😢
Yes I was 14 and we all slow danced to this sad love song
In jr high school… so classic
One of the first rock songs in history to incorporate and feature strings in the arrangement. The final climax of the song with Janet Vogal soaring into the HIGH C NOTE is amazing in and of itself.
That's so interesting! I had no idea Janet ad-libbed that! Neat.
Thank you !
Sometimes, there are some great moments that occur after a planned "fade-out." Janet's vocal performance was way too good not to keep!
Those strings make a big difference
The Skyliners hailed from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The lead singer was Jimmy Beaumont. For another great selection by the Skyliners try "This I Swear".
Yep, song written by another Pittsburgher, Joe Rock.
This song was a big part of my adolescence, growing up in Pittsburgh. #Pittsburghdoowop #Pittsburghboomer
Carrick High. I Graduated with Jimmy Beaumont's cousin at Brentwood high
It was a great time to grow up Harri. I wish I could go back then.
A very, very, very special song..
I never get tired of seeing the joy on your face when you hear a great song for the first time.
Right?
One of the greatest hits of the 50s. Love it.
NEVER got tired of this song in 60 yrs or so of listening. One of the most beautiful songs ever
Jimmy Beaumont was one of the best singers ever. THIS I SWEAR is nearly as good. I know u would dig it Harri.
The groups from the DooWop era are fantastic, and many of them are still alive and singing just as beautiful.
That was real music.
I'm sitting here the whole song waiting on that high note! Beautiful!
Absolutely, that is so worth the wait!
Janet Vogel had the voice of an angel.😊😊😊😍
One of my all time favorite songs! I'm so very glad you like it so much!
Totally iconic early 60's song.
Great find Harri! This is one of the most beautiful doowop songs ever. Im listening to it 60 yrs. Actually I can hear this daily and still love it. Jimmy Beaumont was one of the greatest singers ever. THIS I SWEAR is very very good also.

So nice you react to this song back when innocence was a virtue.
One of the best oldies of all time. Their song This I Swear is also amazing
I loved this song when I first heard the 1969 cover version by Jay and the Americans, then I heard the Skyliners' 1959 origonal, which blew my mind.
An all time beautiful favorite. And Janet;s high ending note! Whoa!!!!
Harri, you definitely killing it tonight, thanks for the great classics
It's a pleasure to watch you hearing these classics for the first time. The Skyliners were very talented and their songs featured lush harmonies and arrangements. There's many more Skyliners songs to discover on youtube. I especially recommend Pennies From Heaven.
Love every minute of it fabulous voice 👍👍👍

This stretches way back in my memory. I was five years old when this was a hit. Great old stuff Harri 🌺✌️
Janet Vogel hits the High Note at the End ...
April 28 2023 (2244 hrs)
Love this song, never knew who did it, thought it was from the 50s. Great reaction Harri!
LOVE this song. Your blissed-out reaction brought cheerful tears to my eyes.
Hi Harri, I love your reaction! Who wouldn't love this classic song? I believe they had difficulty selling it to a record producer due to all the "you, you, you, yous..." at the end. But why not? He doesn't have YOU< YOU< YOU...

Hi, Harri. This is the music of my youth. I didn’t realize how good we had it back then. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm for this.
Fabulous song...had it on a 45 and turntable to play it...used to play all the time

Thanks , Harri, for appreciating my favorite. Bill. Try “This I Swear”. 5:30
Buck Ram was with The Platters. Joe Rock was the lyricist and manager of The Skyliners
Joe Verscharen's family owned Grocery stores around the Pittsburgh South Hills called of course Verscharen's
Ricky Nelson covered this song with more bluesy version about 6 years later. I love this song every since I heard it in the movie American Graffiti in 1973, although this is from 1959. For me, one of the greatest records ever made.
I think the American Graffiti soundtrack is one of the best ever
@@BB--13118 Whomever did the music selections for that movie/album knew their stuff.

I remember this from my childhood. Always loved it. Just beautiful. Good music never goes out if style❤ Thanks Harri!
Grew up in Pittsburgh in the 69s, this song was everywhere. Still saw them in the park 10 years ago.
That song was my favorite song also I was 17 years old and now I'm old and I still love it as much as I did then! Thank you so much!! Jimmy Beaumont was spectacular and passed away sadly 6 years!!!! He will and is missed!!!😂😅❤

I must tell you that of all the reaction folks I watch, I enjoy your reactions the most.
This song reminds me of my late husband.
Harri, you're the best!
This song is a classic. It's on my playlist too!!

I thought this was another Daniel song. I bet he had it on a list, I did. Such a great song.

when music was real and so was the talent...
A great song by a great group. Also listen to THIS I SWEAR, another one of their best songs.
"THIS I SWEAR" BY THE SKYLINER HAUNTING
This I Swear by The Skyliners is another great one.
One of my all-time favorite slow dance jams.
A CLASSIC....one of the most famous of all early rock songs...1958 if I'm not mistaken. One of the ultimate "DOO WOP" genre songs.
And the notes the chick hits at the end,,,WOW!
When I was a very young kid, I’d mix up by this song from ‘59 with Since I Fell for You-‘63 (Lenny Welch) & I Only Have Eyes for You-‘59 (The Flamingos). [I actually loved the Art Garfunkel -75 version more ❤]
All great songs to reply to!!
perfection 🥺 and joy 🥲
Jimmy Beaumont - absolute velvet.
A time when voices were much more important then the music supporting it. Great reaction Harri
And there was no such thing as auto tune just reverb which creates the sound you would hear if a band is playing in a large room. Very different from vibrato, tremolo.
Oldies but GOODIES!
Harri...thank you for covering all these old songs...they were great and so much fun...
Harri. You shoulda been there...when it was in the air...the time period and its sweet musial sounds. It would've made you an even a better person than you already are. For me, it was all like only yesterday. I swear.

That ending with the repeated "you... you... you... you..." always gets me - every time. 3:18
If that song doesn't grab you, the ending definitely will!

Totally agree, it’s always been a favorite of mine. Brings back so many memories of my high school dances.
I danced this at my Prom back in 1963. ❤
great reaction...you get it....
The one & only Jimmy Beaumont RIP❤
Harri, the lead singer is the late Jimmy Beaumont.
Beautiful part of early rock and roll.
Tom Grant did a pretty good cover of this song in the 1980s - worth a listen .
