- This week, Russian's state energy supplier, Gazprom slashed gas supplies to Germany through the Nord Stream One pipeline - now flows have sunk to just 20 percent of capacity. That makes filling Germany’s reserves before the weather gets cold a challenge: and any further reductions could trigger emergency gas rationing. Will European countries have a summer of solidarity to stave off a bitter winter?

Russia supplies 40% of Germany’s natural gas. About 40% of Germany’s natural gas is used to heat people’s homes. If Germany cuts off the natural gas to everyone’s homes, then industry will have all the gas that they need. If people get cold, they can wear long johns and a jacket. When they sleep they can use more blankets.
People live outside in the snow for fun. It’s called “camping”. They don’t freeze to death when they wear proper clothes and use a proper sleeping bag.
Also, the wimps who can’t handle a cold winter can easily buy a nice modern efficient clean burning wood stove that can burn firewood and coal. Germany has plenty of coal.

Russia has always focused on small nations that are easily overpowered and they have still managed to get humiliated like in Chechnya because they always underestimates them and overhypes themselves. USSR was way more powerful and up to date militarily than Russia, and they became a part of the long list of empires that have been broken by the Afghan mountains. Small dog barks loud...

People's reasoning amazes me sometimes. Each country must do what it needs to do to get desired result. If Russia cuts the gas completely it's them that's gotta deal with consequences, EU declared to reduce gas dependence from Russia they should deal with the consequences of their decisions as well.
Fact that west sanctioned everything Russia except gas is clear indication that Russia got them by the balls in regards to gas, so why shouldn't they try to sway things their way?
Secondly, If it's hard for Russia to trade gas with China and India because of the distance and absence of streams, same applies to Europe in relation to turning to US as alternative...

It's already over the relationship between Russian and EU, so what Russia has to lose if they cut the gas completely? Nothing! Putin knows Europe gonna cut the comercial relation with russia and now he's just playing with EU. Well, gas pipelines from Russia to China aren't that difficult to build. In fact there's a few already and more are on the way. On the other hand, a pipeline underneath the Atlantic is impossible, so there's no light at the end of the tunnel as far as the EU is concerned. Geography trumps everything else.

I concede I have ZERO unique powers to read the minds in the Kremlin OR Brussels and other capitals. But from where I sit, there is too much delusion in the West. The creation of the impression that Europe was doing Russia a favour by buying her gas is another form of hubris. Its clear to any observer that the cheap fuel from Russia was good for Europe. This was a mutually beneficial agreement. Russia is looking elsewhere as is Europe. Russia new markets and possibly reduced profit margins at least in the short term, BUT for Europe its diminished supplies and higher costs for the short and long term. It doesn’t look like there is another magic source for gas for Europe that can be achieved at comparable costs. So the “weaning ourselves off Russian gas” is simply a declaration for “paying more for fuel in future” which not only increases productions costs for Europe, thus making her products less competitive, but also diminished quality of life for Europeans due to increased consumer costs. Geography demands that good and secure relations for Russia and Europe is good for both. May sense prevail. 🙏🏿
maybe this is the kick in A2 they need to start learning other ways to cook and heat their houses. That will help them in the long run. gas is a fossil fuel and this needs to be phased out anyway

What you miss though is that simultaneously, the Euro has dropped to on par with the American dollar. even with products costing 50% more from original price they are 100% cheaper for international buyers.

as usual DW is busy talking into a echo chamber. i am shocked that no one in EU even questioned the possibility of Russia halting gas supply in retaliation for the economic sanctions by EU. Now Germany has to source LNG from other sources and it will be 2026 before the infrastructure is build to supply LNG in sufficient quantity to making ban on Russian gas feasible. But Germany is going to have to suffer significant drop in industrial production which will make the current economic situation that much more worst for the next few years.
Sometimes you´ll pay a price. And I think this price is worth when getting Russia back to cavemen times.
Mistakes were definitely made but the pain of reworking eu energy will still be less than being a bunch of russian vassal states because you gave putin control of your energy. The quickest way out includes helping ukraine win …. so why still dragging feet.

Germany is wondering how high the cost will go... when describing the sanctions on Russia didn't they describe them in the beginning as going to keep increasing until Russian economy crumbles. Might be what to expect.
Except the Russian economy is not crumbling. The IMF reported that the expected 15% GDP contraction is now down to 6% and will be revised in the Fall. The Russian Central Bank slashed interest rates to 8% from 9.5% in July, 100bps more than expected. Stats show that since late May, weekly inflation in Russia went to 0%, and hovers between 0-0.3%, and has dipped into deflation. Also, ideal weather is leading to RECORD crops. The ruble is still at a five year high. Its not crumbling. The SCO and BRICS just agreed to trade in national currencies and finished setting up mechanisms for it.
The EU is the one auto-sanctioning itself and facing dire situations. The gas prices are up 400%. But the worst is the upcoming food crisis. This summer's harvest was 215% more expensive to produce because of fertilizer, seed and diesel increases in cost, but 30% has been lost due to the droughts.
The sanctions on Russia already totally destroyed their car manufacturing and flight industry. They are just able to buy food and have to save on anything else.The growth of three decades was destroyed already and that was just the beginning. Russians are starting to plunder chips from washing machines for their war machinery. Sanctions work slow but bone crushing.
@@ObeySilence The flight industry is down because they can't get Boeing and Airbus parts. The car industry is still running, but they don't produce airbags, so that is an issue. Food is normal as is everything else. I don't think that you realize much. Little has changed in Russia except the first 2 months of the war was harder, then it all normalized. Weekly inflation is down near zero since late May. And weather was ideal, so crops are expected to break all records. I cannot speak for the chips situation.
The US & UK intel services assured the EU that sanctions would work quickly.

I have no hot running water for 2nd year and room temperature in winter around 19 degrees C, no problem with that I didn't even get cold.
Actually my hot running water has room temperature as boiler is let powerless and cold water going in has in winter about 9 degrees C.

Those increased costs will have to be added to the cost of manufacture. The Products made with high cost energy will not be competitive with products made by others in low cost energy countries.
Germany isn't exactly a middle income country. The things being manufactured there aren't really competing 1:1 with the countries that won't be impacted.

They're competing largely with other European countries or with Japan and South Korea a who have also placed sanctions on Russia and are experiencing increasing energy prices due to the increase in demand for oil and gas from Europe. They aren't affected at the same rate, but they also aren't getting cheap Russian gas.

He was getting $800 million a day from energy sales to Europe. China and India cannot nor have the capability to replace it. War is expensive and Russia will not have the money to fight this war nor pay their soldiers. Russian soldiers are already griping about not being properly supplied and "bonus" pay that they are not getting. The Russian people will suffer and hopefully they get rid of Putin.

There is some Western things that need replacements like airbags for car that they can get from Asia and parts for Airbus and Boeing aircraft. The Russians will likely respond by building more Sukhoi commercial jets. A lot of tech can be had from China or India which produces tech for the West.
In the EU, energy is 400% up. France is scrambling for LNG because half of nuclear plants are down. Macron told the industry to retrofit the boilers from gas to oil. So, food could triple in price by the Fall. And, if industry has no energy, mass layoffs. Believe me, its not looking fun.

Power of Siberia 1 is already online since 2019. Power of Siberia 2 is expected for 2030 at the latest. 5 LNG stations for gas to China were also opened in 2019.

There is a lot of speculation about Nord Stream 1 turbines. However Siemens is located in Germany where you are and you could easily interview them. For example, Gazprom has complained ten letters have been sent to Siemens who is responsible for the turbines. Is this true? Interview Siemens so we can cut to the chase. Everyone's time (and money) is being wasted with speculation when the source is right there in Germany.

Over the last yr n a half I've built an off grid power system for my house. It has cut my energy bill considerably. It could help those who can afford to do it quickly. Itll sure be cheaper than the bills coming during the winter. Hopefully it won't be as long as a winter as predicted

@@tonyjay508 Germany uses 8.6 billion cubic meters of gas a day and those cargo ships hold about 266,000 cubic meters a piece so that takes 32,330.8 LNG tankers. It needs to come from a pipeline, like from Denmark.
Finland has no problem meeting the EU commission's proposed targets in gas consumption reduction. We haven't bough any Ruzzian can for a several months and have thus reduced it's usage by far more than mere 15 %.
Germany needs to take all the measures into play. Bring back coal and phased out nuclear power.
Germany has for years worked as communist agent for Russia and China all so that their automakers can sell more cars in china. CPEC, Nord pipeline is prime example of surrendering country critical infra to autocratic countries.

Most coal plants in Germany were converted to gas and retrofits back to coal take time. It would be using mothballed plants if they still exist (most were demolished). Also, most coal used in Germany (45.3%) came from Russia and it is banned as of August 1st. Nuclear is still being phased out at end of 2022 since most uranium came from Russia and Khazastan, and that will also be banned. There is NO way out. Reduced gas usage in summer is normal (that is why NS1 is shut down every year in July for maintenance) because there is no cold, no schools, many people are on vacations and longer days means less electricity usage. However, the time is usually used for storing for increased gas consumption in winter, and Germany is way behind. Less than 40% of the storage has been done. Storage is usually near 92% by end of August and this won't happen. Finland is a completely different situation than Germany.

No - they offered Nordstream 2 as an alternative to the technical problems on Nordstream the first week of June. Germany is doing this to itself. Why, is not clear. Nordstream had 3 of 5 compressors down due to turbine issues. I always try to find the bright side of the problem, and the truth is, EU is lucky that Russia didnt wait a few more years to invade Ukraine, by which time the Green deal, Nordstream 2 and EU's dependence on russian gas would be on a completely different level. EU basically wants to very rapidly transition from fosil fuel and nuclear to renewables, but scaling up renewables to that extent will still take decades, so the middle ground would be to use russian gas in the meantime even for creating electricity (it would replace all coal and nuclear plants), because it is more environmentally friendly to burn gas rather than coal and gasoline. Nordstream 2 should have more than doubled the import of russian gas this year. If Russia started gas blackmailing in the middle of the transitioning pediod when EU would be completely dependent on gas, it would result in a true economic catastrophy. Right now EU can kinda survive without russian gas, some countries worse than other, but the economy does not collapse. If this happened 5-10 years in the future, when EU and especilly Germany wanted to use gas to produce electricity in gas burning plants, we would not only lose heating during winter, but the electricity itself would be in jeopardy and therefore also super expensive. I personally think that if Russia waited and invaded Ukraine in like 2027-2030, EU would not even be able to apply any drastic sanctions because no gas would mean a total collapse of EU as even electricity availability would be cut way down.
With you 100%, we should be very thankful russia has misread the situation so devastatingly.

I think it's worth noting that Russia does not have to cut off supply completely for there to be problems this winter. If they do, we are guaranteed a recession and rationing in Europe 2022/23 at a minimum.
You are right, and I believe they won't do it for 2 reasons, maybe more:
1st - it's there style. Destabilise. They like to play cat with a mouse, attacking, then giving hope they will not attack... And then when you had time to breath a bit and recover a bit, attack again and repeat.
2nd- if they do, they have no one else to sell their gas and they risk that we find alternatives and then we won't buy it again.
I think nobody is expecting Europe to go and begg Russia for gas and like... Say "please let me have it and I promise I will support you ever!" That want happen. If gas is cut, the EU will find alternatives and once it does... It is game over for russian gas
Most countries in Europe have reduced Russia gas imports by 2/3 already and are filling gas reserves right now. Next year we will use even less gas from Russia.

FIRST, Russia is NOT cutting gas. There are now 3 compressors of 5 that are offline on NS1 due to Siemens turbines issues - either absent for repairs and not returned due to sanctions, or others that were found damaged during the maintenance in July. The Russians can do nothing. Apparently Siemens found another turbine with issues so it may be down to 1 compressor in August. The reason for Nordstream 2 was to prevent this scenario but Scholz doesn't want to open it. The Russians did nothing. Yamal-Europe was shut down by Poland, who reversed the flow to get Russian gas from Germany at a cheaper price and Ukraine shut down one of its two pipelines in May for unclear reasons, mostly political. The EU did this to itself - stop blaming the Russians for its own stupidity.
The EU is in MAJOR trouble. Gas is one thing, but Germany is looking at ZERO energy. Coal plants were retrofitted to gas and reconversion would take time. Most coal (45%) came from Russia which is banned as of August 1st and so was uranium. So, the 3 plants will likely close at the end of 2022.
PLUS, what people haven't yet been told, is that this summer's harvest was 215% more expensive to produce than 2021 because of fertilizer/seed/diesel price increases and droughts have caused so far a 30% crop loss. This should come into effect near October/November with massive price increases for food.
If Germany tanks, the whole EU will go down the toilet. France is in MAJOR trouble. 29 or its 56 reactors are down due to lining issues. Macron is scrambling for LNG and a floating LGN plant. He told industry in the south of France to convert boilers to oil instead of gas. Uniper, Germany's main gas company, failed and had to be bailed out. EDF (Énergie de France), is close to bankruptcy with billions in debt. The EU is looking at a major depression, not just a recession.

I do similar things in USA. If it is very cold, I limit how many rooms I use. and obstruct airflow between with blankets. i also sometimes do as much as possible from the couch or bed and under blankets.
Hopefully I will start working from home soon, and by winter will be able to do that more than I do now.

Kind of curious to how much power France produces with nuclear power. I know they have the most nuclear power plants out side of the US, maybe they can export some of that power to Germany.
No as a Russian living in France for more than 10 years, I can tell you we have a problem with summer heat, and subsequent decrease in cooling capacity for the stations ( water for cooling of reactors comes from rivers, mostly Rhône), so we can't use our nuclear power plants for more than 60% of nominal capacity, not even dreaming about energy export.
Ironically Ukraine is about to boost electricity exports to EU by at least x2.5 (it's up there with France in terms of nuke power output).
But natural gas (as a chemical) is often required in manufacturing.
Anyway, market will rebalance and it'll work out in the end.
