      Denso is part of the Toyota group and used to be wholly owned by Toyota. During the time that these types of filters were developed for use on Toyota vehicles is when Toyota was designing and building some of their most legendary engines world renowned for their incredible reliability and durability. As part of that deign process, Toyota prioritized oil flow versus micron filtration, thus in most cases Denso filters were designed to ensure maximum oil flow, minimum restriction since Toyota engineers felt that between a reduced oil flow to bearings (even if the oil is well fitered,) or plenty of oil that may have more particles, the better choice by far (based on their own testing) was plenty of oil flow. This is why Denso filters usually have very long filter media, even it's just cellulose based media, the extra length is designed to spread out captured particles along the full length of the media (versus shorter media length which leads to "particle crowding") and thus be able to maintain maximum oil flow characteristics even as the filter loads up with particles towards the end of the oil change interval. Some other Japanese auto manufacturers such as Suzuki also followed this design principle. The smaller the particle capture size, the tighter, more densely formed the filter media needs to be and then reduces total potential oil flow capabilities, especially as a more dense but shorter filter media results in contaminant particles crowded together on the shorter media surface which in turn potentially slows oil flow even further as the media loads up with contaminants. So based on that, most of the Denso filters were designed to maximize particle capture rate at around the 40 micron size at a rate of 98% even though smaller particles as also captured but at a reduced rate correspondingly. Their approach can be summed up as "Maximum oil flow/plentiful media surface/capture area to reduce contaminant crowding/tightest quality control and uniformity.

    Denso is a Japanese company. They R&D the parts and have others make to their spec. The parts world as you know is very competitive with price. You can see the over all quality is better even though this filter was made in China. A lot of the Japanese companies have been shying away from china since covid (Supply and other reasons). I work for a Japanese tech company and seeing a lot of the main components shifting to made in Japan, Malaysia or Thailand. Most of the countries depended too much on China including Japan/US and put in a big supply bind when things went bad.
    The Ford label says "Majority made is USA" ."other" maybe China? At least most made in USA. I hope 100% one day
    I tend to use Motorcraft oil and filter in my Ford Focus and what ever is on sale, good quality oil and Denso filter for my Nissan.
    Anyway thank you posting. You have a good channel

      My vehicle with a Ford 4.6 uses the Motorcraft fl820s. When I switched to the Denso filter, I noticed it clattered a little on startup. I had five of those filters, and the second wasn't that bad. The third had the same problem, so I don't trust the anti-drainback valve on those. I'm using Wix now, but the Motorcraft was fine, and great for the price. Made in China wasn't a good move for Denso.

    I buy motorcraft for my car, I use an oversize filter with finer media. But, if you're putting exactly 5 quarts of oil from a jug on an oil change, the smaller size filter will give you a higher oil level on your dip stick. So think with your dipstick what oil capacity filter is better in your case.

      I prefer to avoid Made In China as well, although in the case of Denso filters, if you do some searching you can find the made in Indonesia (also Malaysia/Thailand/Taiwan) and made in Japan versions as well. For obvious reasons the made in China ones are usually the cheapest but even so Denso is VERY strict with their quality control, remember they are part of the Toyota group and actually used to be wholly owned by Toyota so they do an excellent job auditing all of the facilities and end products regardless of which country they are manufactured in. I would still purchase an Indonesian or Japan made Denso product over a Chinese one though if the choice was there.

      I stopped using Denso filters in my shop when they moved the majority of their production to China. I’m old enough to remember when Denso was nothing but top quality Japanese parts. We use Full Filters almost exclusively for the past few years The ones not made in Japan are still made in their own factories in Thailand and Indonesia. Much better options than Communist China.

    While both the filters 'may fit' the same vehicle, they are two different application filters. Use the Wix filter look up to confirm. Obviously the Denso is smaller. What makes you say the Denso adbv is silicone? It's not on the box. Appears black nitrile to me. Denso FTF was made US and used red silicone adbv, when moved to China, website never changed. In this case, of the two I'd choose the Motorcraft made in US. Thanks for the video.

With the FL 820-S(Fits 7.3L) On the Box the Claim is a "High Efficiency and High Capacity" and the location of the Bypass valve if opening only allowing (we believe it to but could be wrong on the micron size) 20+Micron back into the engine(unfiltered) we have a New F-250 7.3L on order, We plane on dumping the factory oil & Filter @ 500 miles install a new Motorcraft filter and Castrol or Valvolene Full Synthetic (Due to Film Strength and thermal breakdown for piston squirters) and changing again @ 2500 miles then again @ 5000, after that Bc the Filter is so Small we will Change it @ 2500 and again at the Normal 5000 oil change...Would love to See Ford come out with a Dual Filter Oil Pan. Actually for logistics reasons Denso has production in a variety of countries, not just Japan and China but also Thailand and Malaysia as well. What Denso does right is very stringent quality control and auditing of each production. Some less "demanding" companies from other parts of the world will have Chinese factory produce for example oil filter to their specifications however after an initial test batch the original company may not do random or regular auditing, they don't really care because they make a much better profit from having certain series produced in Chinese factory. Those are the ones to stay away from but not so much a worry with Denso because they keep tight control of that.

      If you look at the base plates in this comparison, one has six larger holes and one with 8 smaller ones. They both "flow" approx. the same rate. As for filtering debris, all filter manufacturers must meet minimum specs set forth by the ASTM, consumer protection standards, the intended application (s) manufacturer requirements and automotive parts regulatory authorities. So basically, if an oil filter by brand x is on the market, it is safe to assume it has been already tested to meet those requirements and has market approval. What these videos by Whip accomplishes, is exposing the different levels of quality in materials, construction, and subsequent value. From that data one can clearly see which filter will perfom and potentially protect the best.

    • @msk3905
      @msk3905 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikebennett703 You realize that decreasing the size of the hole results in increased flow due to the increased pressure across it and increasing hole size reduces pressure reducing flow? Although the six are larger not that much and I bet if you calculate the total area of both Motorcraft will be greater. Besides that I see the 8 smaller holes outflow the 6 larger ones. Also, you state that they must meet minimum specs but this doesn’t mean they can’t exceed it, it is common to add a safety factor making it better so that they pass the testing first time.

    • @mikebennett703
      @mikebennett703 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@msk3905 Restricting size increases velocity relative to available pressure but does not increase volume / time relationship. Larger holes will allow a given volume to pass more freely with less pressure requirements from the pump increasing longevity. Engines that are sensitive to oil pressure will be less noisy at start up with holes that are larger because oil can flow through faster than more restrictive passages..

We don't know the data around how the oil flows through the Motorcraft and Denso paper media, we don't know how small of particles each one will filter at what pressure etc. And not that you can obtain the data, but OEM manufacturers spend an awful lot of money engineering parts like this to ensure they provide the proper amount of protection without costing the manufacturer or consumer too much money. If you are watching the video, you most likely maintain your vehicle properly and if that is the case, using the OEM filter for your vehicle will protect your engine very well.

    For being a chinese product, the denso kicked the motorcraft's @$$ in this one.

    Nippon denso is a world wide supplier of oem parts...their standards of quality have been well documented over a wide range of applications.Denso makes the better filter and anyone with a brain and a pair of eyes knows it.

      I agree in this video comparison alone the Denso might be the better oil filter.

      With all the fine filters made in US of A, I'll chose that over an off shored made China filter.

    I think the Denso filter is better, but I bought 3 Denso in my life for the same vehicle, and 3 times I got a different filter 1 made in Japan,1 made in Thailand, and 1 in China, all 3 with the same parts number, but all different inside, first one that was made in Japan, it wasn't a conventional design, it was almost like Origami, not even a conventional pleats, so I told my self from now on, this what I am buying, then I bought another one, that one was made in Thailand this time, it had no end cap and the pleats were glue at both ends, and the last one was like this one, so I just wonder am I going to get one like that or something completely different the next time? and I try if possible not to buy made in China a hostile nation to us, so for all those reasons, I will be buying the Motorcraft made in the USA.

      Hi Bud,
      All good reasons to buy U.S.-made.
      Thanks for your feedback👍😊

    Denso is juunk unless it's OEM nippon denso. They sold the name. Motorcraft i believe may be like the old purolators. Again Purolator sold the name. Someone else makes the new stuff. I've used the fl-400 in mowers and my Toyota. I always look inside the filter and check for debris. I don't trust the Chinese filter media. They use recycled garbage to save material. No scruples at all. Companies are getting more brave too.

    Reciting the date code is useless info if nobody knows what it means.
