This is so helpful; I've been struggling with this style. I really like the way you set it up initially as two separate layers.

I'm happy you found it helpful! And thank you for pointing out the detail with the separate layers. I appreciate it. It's easy for me to overlook these kinds of tips and tricks as they have been a part of my own workflow for so long.

Keep doing your thing!!! Your work is amazing, was up at the Midgard museum in Borre and was SHOCKED! I mean SHOCKED To see your illustrations all over the building. Congrats man! Always wondering what your process is like working on these, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to see more of these videos!

      Thank you, Niko!
Yes, it's pretty incredible! I think they even used my illustrations throughout the exhibition too. I hope it looks and works great :)
I'm working on creating more video and process content. So hopefully you'll get to see a lot more of what's going on behind the curtains going forward.

So hum, do you have tips for someone working with Ye Olde Pen & Paper? 😛
Seriously though, it was suuuuper helpful to see your workflow! I'll figure a way to adapt what I can from your technique. Thanks for posting! ✌

You can absolutely make my process work for pen and paper too. Check out my introduction to creating viking age art here:

It's an intro to my process and setup for how I go about it in the Urnes Course, and how you can easily adapt the setup to pen and paper too.

Looks like you’re using Affinity. Do you still use it? Have you used other programs? Ans which do you prefer? I mainly use Clip Studio and Illustrator; I’m a tattoo artist, and I’m getting a lot more requests for “Viking” sleeves. I’ve been working at improving this style for a few years, and you are such an inspiration. The knowledge that you are passing along to us is priceless!
    Thank you!

Yes, I absolutely love Affinity. I’ve been using Designer (their Illustrater alternative) for all my viking age designs for the past couple of years. I’m now getting into also switching from Photoshop to using their alternative called ‘Photo’ as well as getting to know their InDesign competitor.
I haven’t tried Clip Studio yet, but it seems popular and well liked too, so might have to try it out.
Though, I especially love the ability in Affinity Designer to seemlesly switch between the pen and brush too (it’s basically Photoshop and Illustrator in one app!).
Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate it 🙏

The Frisians made urnes to. But when the army of Holland conquered them they installed the church, which caused a bloody uprising and the army from Holland killed many in Frisia. They eradicated the ancient art schools about yggdrasil and there art. You still find a lot of Odins crosses all over Frisia ( now a province of Holland). We have to start all over again to learn this 1000 year old art form.

I bet they did (I'm not too familiar with the history of Frisia and Holland). But the Urnes style was essentially a Christian art style developed in converted Scandinavia at the end of the Viking Age and transitioned seamlessly into the Romanesque style of Continental Europe after the Viking Age.
