What's the Meaning of These Bird Brooches?
This design is constructed based on the features of several Style II/B and Style II/C bird brooches. Thus, it exemplifies essential characteristics and features of the Germanic Iron Age brooches.
Designs similar to this one were popular from the 6th century until the beginning of the Viking Age.
The meaning of the imagery is not exactly clear, and the designs vary a lot in detail, though the overall composition follows a somewhat set template.
Let's have a look at the potential meaning and significance of these bird brooches.

Reconstructing the Design of a Borre-style Penannular Brooch

The penannular brooch design illustrated here is primarily based on two finds from Kråkberg and Björkö, Sweden. But it also takes inspiration from several other finds to recreate a more complete picture of what a design like this would have looked like in its full glory.

Reconstructing the design of the so-called palmette brooches
มุมมอง 614ปีที่แล้ว
Many small, almost identical so-called palmette brooches from the late Viking Age have been found in recent years. They are very similar in silhouette, size and overall design but can differ in detail. Based on a selection of the brooch finds, I'll create a design with the most common elements composing palmette brooches, giving a good sense of what the designs typically would have looked like.

      Borre style is actually similar in many ways but differs in detail (like heads, feet and ribbon ends). There are good examples of some of the Borres style details in some of my recents videos. So check them out if you haven't already :) These two are especially relevant: th-cam.com/video/3XXHGn3pITM/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/Fuep9_7DBuY/w-d-xo.html

    Seems like the tendril entangling the legs ought to have a logical origin. A serpent would certainly be consistent with other Urnes beasts. Maybe jesses as used in (at least modern) falconry?

    • @jonaslaumarkussen6045
      @jonaslaumarkussen6045 ปีที่แล้ว

      All plausible. I haven't been lucky to find convincing evidence for what it could have been yet. Some four-legged beasts in Ringerike and Urnes style have their feet tied in knots. But I haven't seen examples of this in bird motifs though.

    • @jonaslaumarkussen6045
      @jonaslaumarkussen6045 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a pre-viking age style (preceding the Broa style) from c. 700-775. So I don’t think it’s included in Campbell’s Viking Art (I don’t have the recent edition).

    Great video✨ I have a question, what does the lip lappet signify/is trying to convey? I'm not aware of any animals that have that kind of structure. Also could the neck tendril represent a horn? But the horn has the design of the leaf motif?

    • @jonaslaumarkussen6045
      @jonaslaumarkussen6045 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's mostly a stylistic trait developed through the style periods, starting as a curled nostril and then developing into a more elongated lip lappet in the Ringerike style. You could maybe interpret it as some kind of whiskers or the tuft of hair on the cheeks that dogs and wolves might have. The neck tendrils are, like the lip lappet, more of a stylistic feature, but it looks like it might resemble horns or rather antlers in some cases. But it is mostly a stylistic feature still :)
