Why Disney's Wish Should Excite You

  • It's been a fair while since I've been this hyped up for a new Disney film. The last couple. Well they haven't been bad, but they haven't excited me. Encanto was great, but the rest of their offerings this decade just ain't it. But now, this film, it looks legitimately exciting. One part nostalgic, one part fresh, I think this could be the start of a new era. Or a fabulous crash and burn. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

    It's the only Disney film I'm excited for, and the only one I have been excited for for some time. I wish they had trashed all the live actions they are planning, ALL, and just poured themselves into this. I can only hope they put the right amount of work and love into this film. It's their first truly original work in a long time, and I'm ready for it

      Who knows? Maybe they WILL trash all the live actions and sequels if this movie does well enough.

      For what it's worth, Walt Disney Animation Studios do not make the live action movies. And Strange World, Encanto, and Raya and the Last Dragon all came out in the last 3 years from the same studio and they are all original ideas. But I understand the frustration for sure!

    I really love the art style. It's feels nostalgic yet modern. The movements looks good and the effects. And that we already know who the villain is. Something we actually needed.
    A villain that isn't twist villain. And is a frickin ruler of a kingdom. That's different and will make it harder for him to be defeated. Ecspecialy when he has a royal army.
    Then the animal sidekick/sidekicks. The goat having a deep voice. Didn't expect that as they pointed out. And the star thing. It's cute. I think that the king wants to capture the star so he's the only one that can grant wishes.
    So everyone will adore him more. And I'm guessing that at the end of the movie. Asha might be like. "You don't have to do this. Just let it go. You're still the king." And try to redeem him. But I hope he's like nope and gets a classic Disney villain death by falling off a cliff.
    And then it might be revealed that Asha is the rightful ruler of the kingdom.

    So I’m an animation/art student myself and I made a prediction about animation a few years ago that I now see coming true. And it’s super exciting.
    Based on my own preferences and what I also saw others saying, I got the sense people were beginning to get bored after only seeing CG animation for 20 years and wanted to see something new, whether that be a return to 2D animation, a blending of styles, or simply more variety of styles such as stop-motion or other unique animation techniques being used in mainstream film. As exciting as it’s been to see CG animation improve from being rough and plastic looking to capturing extremely realistic skin, hair, clothing, nature/building, and lighting textures…the lack of variety was starting to get tired.
    So, my prediction for animation was, and still is, that as more time passes we are going to start seeing animation become much more free and much more creative. For now, most studios are scared to break away from CG but also want to embrace stop-motion and 2D animation as well. So their solution is to blend styles. Personally I think this is extremely cool and clever and I’m a big fan. I have 0 complaints if this is what we get for the next few years.
    However I am making a prediction right now, that within the next 10-20 years…maybe 30 years at most, we WILL see multiple types of animation used in mainstream film even if the actual animation techniques for creating a specific look are more advanced. I think we will start to see many films that are CG but LOOK fully hand drawn to the point where the average viewer may not be able to tell they are watching a movie with any CG in it. I know Klaus was mostly hand drawn with limited CG, but I think we are going to get some more films that, if not made like Klaus, at least look like Klaus. I think animators will figure out a technique for truly creating 3D animation that looks 2D, so that they can achieve that nostalgic look that a lot of people like, but in a way this is faster and easier than it would be to actually make a fully hand-drawn film. I also think more films will be made in the style of many indie video games. Many of them figured out how to blend 2D and 3D animation a long time ago and have very beautiful and unique art styles. I also think the look of 2D animation may change a bit from having a beautiful but generic Disney-esc style to taking on a more modern sort of photo-shop look with lots of different brush textures. I think 2D animation will begin to look like the concept art often created for 3D films. I genuinely believe that will happen because the concept art for films is often so creative and so gorgeous. I also think stop-motion will become more popular since stop motion is not only limited to claymation. Stop motion can really be anything.
    I’m excited to see a world in which animators can truly be creative. I think certain films NEED to be made in certain art styles or else they just don’t work as well. I have seen a TON of 3D animated movies where I’ve thought to myself “this would have worked so much better if this movie was 2D cuz the 3D animation just doesn’t look good”. I have also seen a few TV shows with hand drawn animation that I have thought would look cooler 3D animated. I have also seen many movies and TV shows that I thought would look better in a less generic Disney-esc art style and would have benefitted from being more unique.
    I don’t think artists should feel pressure to conform to a specific style, and I feel that now we are beginning to see a break from that. As the years pass I think we’ll only see more of a break until we get to a point where lots of different types of animation and lots of different art styles become mainstream. Now, I still think the big studios will be the most popular. I still think Disney and the Disney style will rule. However, I also think we will see some things that are completely new to mainstream film, with art styles we haven’t seen before outside of TV, video games, short films, and more avante guard independent films being used in films released in theaters. And I’m extremely exited for it. :)

    I’m very exited for this one. Disney has brought us unnecessary live-actions and personally as the more I watch new ones, the worse they are. So this combination of 2-D and 3-D is a demonstration that Disney has learned from competition and, even more, incorporated something from its own: watercolour style. This movie is the greatest opportunity that the company has to show us that it is still the number one in the world of animation. “Wish” not only has to be successful, it MUST be successful.

    I’m so glad that Disney is pushing the raytracing and art techniques for this film. The pencil-like outlines in the background, the little star creature looking like a gouache painting, the watercolour sky, it looks amazing. Finally pulling influence from Paperman and Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse.
    Also, it looks like Disney is breaking away from its “surprise plot twist villain” curse that’s been in the past several films of the studio’s late Revival Era. He’s just right in the trailer. I’m excited for this.

    • @Katy133
      @Katy133 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TheStOne1 I'm not saying that Spider-Verse nor Paperman _look_ like Wish. I'm saying that it's _pulling influence_ from them both on the technical side. You see the pencil-like outlines over surfaces in the trailer? Instead of using default/realism rendering settings or some form of photogrammetry, Wish is using a ray tracing modifier to create outlines over 3D objects (Spider-verse used this same technology to create outlines before the artists added their own by hand as well). Then after that, the technical artists for Wish composited computer assisted line and paint overtop the characters and background. And then for the lighting, they used path tracing (Disney was beginning to play around with that with Paperman and Feast--note the heavy rim lighting in both shorts as well as Wish). Hope this clears things up!

    I feel like Disney should start making more original movies again. Instead of trying to skate by on nostalgia-bating the older generations, they should make more original movies to get the younger kids loving it AND make the older generation love it as well. Hopefully, Disney continues taking their movies in this direction, yk?

The goat and the star are super cute and the protagonist looks nice too. The hair looked a bit weird, but after looking at it more and more I noticed all the details and it's okay. The movie over all is a nice idea, because it speaks to all Disney films that have the wishing star in it.

Especailly if they bring back certain beloved storytelling traditions of Classic Disney movies! So far we have an "I want" song ("This Wish), an animal sidekick (Valentino), and a revealed villain song (titled "This is The Thanks I Get"), so two more things we need is that the villain Magnifico gets a satisfying villain death (no redemption or forgivness whatsoever) AND someone dies for a few minutes then is then brought back to life through magic (two contenders I see are Asha and Simon)

    I'm really excited to hear the music and find out the plot--but the hybrid style is really iffy for me. Around this time, Frozen 2's animation was about 20% complete, so maybe Wish will improve by the next trailer.

    • @BuizelCream
      @BuizelCream ปีที่แล้ว

      Frozen 2 had a rough production in the writing department. It contributed to the animation only being 20% during this part of the production timeline.
      If Wish is having a more smoother run in its production, the film will have much more room to polish its presentation. I hope it is.

      @@BuizelCream Jennifer Lee co-wrote the script, so hopefully she wrote this in a similar vein to the original script for Frozen 2--though I thought the major rewrites occured after the test audience screening, when only 20% was done.

    • @BuizelCream
      @BuizelCream ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OpticalSorcerer You got it right actually. The rewrites in question occured immediately after a WIP movie manuscript was showed through test screening. Frozen 2 was rewritten to simplify the story because it was too complex for children who saw that screening, they reasoned. All this presenting with only 20% of the animation done.
      I guess in a way it was cost-effective for them that they did not complete much of the animation for that test screening, or they would have been wasting a lot of finished animation. But still, they had to play catch-up due to the movie releasing soon in that same year.
      I only realized Jennifer Lee co-wrote Wish's script. I hope it'll be good. I think Jennifer also co-wrote the 1st Wreck It Ralph, and that was a good movie.

    • @OpticalSorcerer
      @OpticalSorcerer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BuizelCream She did do WiR, too! Due to how polarized the reception is with the hybrid style, I do hope they were around 20% or less done with animation so they can fix it. One person said Asha looks like she's in one of the production stages of 3D animation, and now I CAN'T unsee it. It's weird how the poster for Magnifico makes him look 100% 3D, though. Personally I find 3D to loom better in terms of hair texture and clothing, but I guees we'll see!
      And I really hope that Jennifer Lee doesn't have to hold back for Frozen 3.

    • @BuizelCream
      @BuizelCream ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OpticalSorcerer That's true. It's the point of 3D animation. It's realism, which means intricate detailing to the tee. 2D-3D hybrid prioritizes stylization, which means some details will be compromized for the sake of style. And then we have pure 2D which is traditional. Either one has pros and cons that may or may not fit with one's preferences.
      But I do hope they continue developing Wish's animation. I compare it to Puss in Boots: the Last Wish, and that film's animation had more richness to it despite being stylized. Disney's Wish still has many months to improve and render their scenes final. I hope for the best.
      And for Frozen 3. I am excited. I hope Jennifer Lee is given a lot of time to develop that film's story. She seems to be the kind of writer who is more like a discovery writer, who writes flying by at the seat of her pants. She doesn't seem to be an outliner who figures every story detail beforehand. I'm not sure if she keenly relies on writing methodology to help structure her stories, or she's more intuitive about it. Maybe more of the latter.

    As someone that works in animation and POC I very much disagree.
    The visuals in this movie look incredibly safe. I can't help but think it looks unfinished. My first reaction when I saw the trailer was think it was made for TV. It just looks like it didn't get a number of texture/painting passes on top to sell this as a 2d style. The shading on the character looks so so flat compared to the line style. I had a teacher once tell me that if someone is noticing your technique more than the story, you failed. I think of movies like Klaus that animated in 3d but look very 2d. Or more recently puss and boots/spiderverse. Hell even Paperman the short! All of these pushed the envelope of animation but had styles that felt right for the stories they were telling. I see WISH and think I've seen this style pretty frequently from independent animators working with grease pencil in Blender without massive rendering machines/huge teams that Disney has. I'm not putting down those artists or Blender, but my sentiment is that if this is a big studio production, it should look like one. I actually want to see Disney push the envelope. It looks like they pointed at the movies that I mentioned earlier and said, "ok people are tired of regular 3d so we can do a LITTLE of what the new movies are doing. But let's not go too far into exploring a new style. We still want this to look like tangled!" This is not a movie that will change the animation industry. This a movie where Disney is following a trend and only working with techniques that have been proven successful by its competition.
    I'm also disappointed that the main character is just a re-skinned elsa/anna. They really could have put more effort in giving the character features that make her look like more Afro-Latina. If they colored her skin peach, she would be easily seen as white. It's a little disappointing when big companies think the only difference in race is the amount of melanin in our skin. My face has actual structural differences compared to a white girl. Enough with the doe-eyes and ski-slope noses! The cynical side of me thinks, Disney will never think POC are beautiful unless they have caucasian features. As a brown-skin girl, trust me, this doesn't do well for our self esteem.

      Early previews in English refer to Asha as being Afro-Latina, but Disney Spain apparently confirmed that she is Moorish, rather than Afro-Latina. In the time period and location this is supposed to be set in, there wouldn’t have been any Latina about her at all, the Spaniards and Moors didn’t intermarry or intermix generally during the Moorish occupation due to religious differences. So it’s all a bit strange in general…Spanish social media is supposedly upset that she was marketed as a Latina princess when she’s not. A story of a Moorish princess could be interesting though!

    Let me list everything that can go wrong given Disney's recent trends:
    1. The movie will be an eye candy with beautiful 2D and 3D. (But going by the trailer it's not as impressive as the Puss in Boots the Last Wish or Spiderverse. We need a better name for that animation style. How about 2/3D? ZED? I don't know.)
    2. The music will be great, at worst forgettable.
    3. The Star character will be annoying.
    4. Valentino will be funny and marketable but the movie could've worked without him.
    5. The world will be huge, beautiful, and interesting and we explore none of it.
    6. The protagonist will be bland with one obvious flaw or a dream which will be related to the message of the movie.
    7. The message will have all the subtlety of the hammer in the face.
    8. Inconsistencies, contradictions, and random stuff happening because funny/the plot.
    9. References to older classics that you wish you would be watching. (You saw how many references they cram now into their other movies? And now it's one of the things they talked about the most!)
    10. Death is funny until we have the fake-out death then you need to care.
    11. No love interest because love makes women weak apparently. Or no love interest because the actress is a lesbian and she talked about how Aish ''looks like her'' because modern acting isn't about pretending to be something you're not, it's about showing who you are every chance you get. And for those who think they might make a lesbian love interest, I would like you to take a look at the gay ''romance'' in the strange world. But if by some chance they do I doubt it will be any good. When was the last romance in Disney, Frozen 2 (2018) and that's a holdover from the first movie (2013) and the last good romance was Tangled (2010).
    12. No villain. Or worse, a lame villain! It's supposed to be a throwback to the older Disney movies and that includes its villains but Disney is so incompetent with their IPs I wouldn't be surprised if they get their own villain ''formula'' wrong. I swear if they try to make him a twist after spoiling that Chris Pine will be voicing the villain and his evil laugh in the teaser trailer, or ''redeem'' him after he did unspeakable evils. And no villain song. Can Chris Pine sing? Please no terrible auto-tune!
    13. Making jabs at old Disney tropes even tho this movie isn't even half as good as the movies that came before it, uses a bunch of other modern tropes or straight up the same ones that it mocked earlier and completely misinterprets them and uses them even worse! Modern Disney seems to hate its past and does everything to show how ''better'' they are now. Which is untrue in most cases and just smug and annoying!
    I'm sorry for being so pessimistic but that's how jaded I become and only towards Disney. It might be their greatest hit that will make people think ''Disney is back''.
    What do you think?

    I’d not even heard of this! And I think it highlights one of Disney’s - actually the entire movie industry’s - problems. I frequently don’t hear about movies until after they’ve left theaters and everyone’s analyzing why they “flopped” - particularly Disney movies for some reason. I think the only Disney movies I’ve actually known about before they showed up on Disney+ the last few years were the various live action remakes and I’m not paying movie theater prices for a story I’ve seen before, probably redone a bit worse. (Though that said… the live action Little Mermaid was actually really good! Just watched it with my friend’s kid. Though maybe that’s because I didn’t actually like the animated version as a kid so it didn’t have as much to live up to as several others.)

    sweet, spunky, hopeful: the three-factor Disney Princess personality generator. i'm happy the trailer isn't spoiling much, but i still think we got enough information to radically lower expectations for this protagonist. this looks, as par for the course for disney, like someone midway on the personality 'spectrum' between Rapunzel and Tiana. if that comes to pass, i'll be salty af about it because we deserve more for a film this allegedly auspicious. fingers crossed, that'll be proven wrong.

They could have FINALLY made a movie set in India for sure, instead of vaguely combining India and the Arabian peninsula with Aladdin. But NOPE. It’s another Hispanic movie. Which isn’t a bad thing, but at least they could use a Hispanic name instead of giving us Indians hope we would finally get a Disney movie about us!! Also after JUST making Hispanic movie Encanto!

    Idk man. As an artist and novice screenplay writer/self proclaimed Disney aficionado, I’ve had this film on my radar for quite some time and… *sigh*
    I want to like this film. I want it to succeed so much. Celebrating 100 years of Disney magic? The original studio to INVENT the animated feature film? HECK YES.
    BUT…
    The first problem I noticed was with the general design and art direction for the film. I love the idea of mixing hand-drawn with computer animation, but something about it feels… off somehow. I may need to see more footage before I can give a more in-depth analysis, but suffice it to say for the moment that I feel like maybe the two styles are clashing in some way. Beyond that, the even bigger issue is the same one I cited when I first saw the trailers for Strange World. It’s boring. See, typically, when you’re designing an iconic thing, whatever it is, you wanna go for something unique-maybe even strange-to help that thing stick out in the minds of the audience. Do you remember what the palace in Aladdin looks like? I bet you do. It’s hard to forget that wide sweeping shot where Aladdin shows off the view to Jasmine and those big, brass towers just take over the screen. How about Cinderella’s castle? Maybe a little fuzzy, but I’ll bet a blue/silvery, tall, thin castle might come to mind. Elegant and whimsical. Even Raya and the Last Dragon had the castle up on top of that big donut rock. It’s pretty hard to forget that. But Strange World and now Wish? Tell me, what’s so wonderful and strange about Strange World? Did they invent something new? Come up with an intricate ecosystem full of unique and interesting creatures? No. They just made a bunch of multi-coloured blob creatures and called it a day. That is literally the least creative decision you could have ever made. Now all I think of when I think about that movie is “Blob Movie.” *Magical.* Similarly, though not quite as bad, Wish has this very… almost mundane design to it. It wants to be big and epic and magical, but… think for a moment-Don’t look up pictures!-just think back to the trailer and try to remember what the palace looks like. Or the village. Does any image at all come to mind? Kinda? Maybe? It’s tall, like a castle, I guess. And maybe that doesn’t seem like a big deal to most people, but trust me, it is a big deal. Or at least, it should be a big deal. Do you remember the Cave of Wonders? Of course you do, it’s impossible to forget. Do you remember Treasure Planet? Well, if you’ve seen the movie at least, you ought to. Do you remember the Jungle where Simba grew up with Timone and Pumba? Some of the features of said jungle? Probably. Or how about Mulan’s house? Mama Odie’s tree in the bayou? The Salmon Run from Brother Bear? I could go on and on and on, but you get the point. Every place in a film-any film, regardless of the medium-is a potential opportunity for something unique and memorable and/or magical. This town is a coastal town, GREAT, use that. Amplify that. More ocean shots, or ships, fishermen, seagulls and other waterfowl, maybe even canals like in Venice, or who knows what else! Literally, the only limit is your imagination! And yet… when I watch the trailer… I see some character… I see some flavour… it is there… but… it’s just kinda mild. Kinda pulled back. A little safe. I’ll bet you anything Disney DOES NOT want to take a chance on their 100 anniversary film, which is understandable, but also sad and ironic, since Walt bet everything he had to make Snow White, the first film, and it turned into a thriving studio. Now, Disney tries not to take risks, and bails itself out of financially hard times just like every other big corporation today. Again, maybe it isn’t really gonna be so bad. I’m willing to give this film the benefit of the doubt and say, “maybe the best parts just aren’t in the trailer,” and I’ll be blown away when the full movie comes out, but I’m telling you, from what I see here in just the trailer… it doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence in me.
    Beyond that, the main character sounds like the most boring main character ever. Ariel was curious and perky but also naive, Belle was intellectual and compassionate, Mulan was brave and clever but also clumsy and awkward, Rapunzel was innocent and sweet, and this girl… well… dude, I’ll be honest, there’s only one thing I still remember from what you just said in your video, and that’s “she cares about her community.” Two things. First, that is only a legitimate personality trait if she’s actually shown to be a community and family oriented person who leans heavily on her relationships with others, and second, it probably won’t be that, because I’ve already seen Disney doing this with other projects recently. The first that comes to mind is the Ghost and Molly McGee. So what’s their deal? Are they just creatively bankrupt and are just coming up with the same three personality traits for all of their heroines over and over again, or are they pushing some kind of agenda? I mean, there are worse things than being community oriented, but still, I find it at least a little odd that they have this sudden urge to push this message in more than one or two locations. I hope good comes of it, but only time will tell. Right now, I’m just side eyeing them, waiting to see where this is supposedly leading. Back to the main character, who’s so bland I completely forgot her name, literally nothing about her personality was actually shown in the trailer. Jasmine had spunk and was feisty and smart and a little coy, but this girl? She just… acts like a girl. A stereotypical, “I got this,” perfect, Pinterest, every-woman, designed to please the white college age women of America who refer to themselves as “Disney Adults” and go the Parks on a monthly basis.
    I see no magic or personality in the world they’ve created (Star Darlings had more personality than this-it OOZES personality, but nobody remembers that! And it even has a similar premise!) And the main character is practically just a promotional picture at the moment. AGAIN, more footage could come out-the movie could come out-and I might eat my words-maybe they have something really good planned-but at the moment, I just don’t see it. Honestly tell me why I should care about this film? Because it’s Disney’s 100 anniversary? Because of the new animation style? Yeah, those things are cool, but they’re also just surface level things. A movie doesn’t need pretty visuals in order to be a good film. Why? Because films are STORIES. STORIES. STORIES. I will shout this from the rooftop until the day I die, you can have all the fancy world building, all the fancy visuals, all the fancy studios, but if the story itself-the very core of the movie-is not solid, the movie won’t be solid either! Now, the art style is not the end all be all for telling if the story is going to be good, but the art design-the locations, the character descriptions, and so on-are. And you know what it’s telling me? This movie does not have a strong identity nor a strong story. It doesn’t fully know/believe in what it is. Every story has something it wants to say, because every person working on the story has something to share in their hearts, but sometimes, when you get unprofessional people, or people who want to push a certain message over what they have inside to share, or when studio execs mandate cookie cutter films designed to make money, you lose that spark. No story can be exceptional without a spark. It may make money… but it will never be a true success.

      Funny how you say you’d probably eat your words and would watch the movie to see what it’s truly like, but you’re still writing paragraphs on how mid it might be because of the artstyle.
      No offense or anything. I just think it’s a *little* odd.

      Wish is animated with meander (among others), the hybrid animation software that Disney developed in 2012 for the short film Paperman and later. They always said they were going to make a feature film out of it and there was an intention to do it already for Moana, but the technology wasn't ready yet and they only used it for a few little things. So no, it's not inspired by Spider-Verse.

Asha is an original character so it’s not like they’re wanting to make a big statement for brownie points.
