5-year review of Chicago Electric 10 in sliding miter saw from Harbor Freight

  • I've had this saw, the Chicago Electric 61972 miter saw for about five years. I have done a lot of Framing and a lot of other work with it. It has been a great saw I have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it. I just wanted to do a quick review because somebody had asked me for it a while back. I had shot a lot of video and did a very in-depth review of this but never posted it. This is one of the cheapest sliding miter saws you'll find so if you're looking at this you're not expecting to get the super nice features of the high-end saws. You just need to know if it's going to work good enough for your application. And I believe this saw will.

    Great video review sir! I purchased the very same saw about ten years ago on a budget to put board and batt cypress on the outside of my house. I initially set it up so that it extends from a 4x8 plywood table outside under the old shade tree and left it there after finishing the siding project. I've since used to build my current wood shop, a lean to wood rack, my front porch and side deck as well as cut dimensional hardwood lumber for my next flooring project and have only replaced the blade twice. as hard as it may be to believe, she is still going strong.
    Cheers,
    F5

      You don't always have to spend a lot on a tool to get one that works. I sold my Dewalt to buy this saw. It worked much better for me. Some of the new expensive tools with all the electronics will stop working the first time they get wet.

    This saw is great! I've used this for years paired with a bauer 80t blade for my work. Cutting window blinds and shutters with ease and fine cuts.

      I used the song for years doing construction work. I never had a single problem. I now do more Hardwoods Furniture building so I needed something a little more accurate. However when I go to build something with construction material I don't want to use my expensive saws and wished I still had a cheaper saw like this.

    For what it is, it’s fantastic. I use mine for basic carpentry, and it works very well in that regard. Def not as accurate for fine work, but it gets the job done if you’re careful

      I sold a Dewalt 12" miter saw to buy this saw. It was a great choice. I used this saw for years before my skills increased enough to need a more accurate saw.

    I've had one of these for about 2 years and you are on the money in everything you said. Good saw, but you do need to be really finicky it you need super accurate cuts. Mine does have the trigger safety, and I've not had any real problems with the bevel though I mostly avoid using it.

    I have this saw and the new Ridgid 12 in.... This saw is so basic and very inaccurate. But it works great for framing. Better than a circ saw. Don't throw it away, because I'm pretty sure that little shit will last forever. The best piece of shit you can buy.... 😂

      I just bought one, and I'm not happy with it. It seems gutless. I'm only cutting half inch ship lap white pine, and it jams up a lot. What if they were maple, or oak. I think this thing is sorta ok, but very weak.

    • @ShopRamblings
      @ShopRamblings  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If it is jamming on shiplap I would take it back. It is defective or the blade is on backwards or something. If you watch the end of my video on the Ridgid planner I added a couple of pictures of a project I did last week. I did a 16' high wall of shiplap. I was cutting 4 at a time. The shelves were 1 1/2 thick 13" wide. Not one problem. The mantle was 4 1/2" x 6". The saw cut everything without a problem. So if yours can't cut 1/2" boards there is something wrong. Harbor Freight is one of the easiest Places to do returns. Were you using an extension cord. It has a 15 amp motor. That is the max on many household breakers. If it was on a long or small cord it could lose power because it is not getting enough amps. The blade also goes on the opposite way you would put it on a table saw. If you have checked everything it could be a defective motor but it would be the first one I heard of. Please let me know what you figure out. If there is a issue I would like to know so I can pass it along. Thanks for posting and letting everyone know.

    All the natives you pointed up are typical nes of any saw in that price range Inran a Architectual Wodworking Installation Crewfor over 25 years and we had over 75 miter saw s of all sizes and Brands everyone had their place because of their Capabilities and Flaws. Part of my job was to make sure the Installers had the correct tools for that job I will note that as a rule the 12” Dewalt double Compound saw was not only the OT Versatile. But they were the most reliable and yes I always installed Blades that often were more than the cost of the saw itself because we did have saws that we used for non precision work I used to laugh because I bought many Delta 10:” saws that were around $70.00 and I put on a $135.00 blade to cut Aluminum and Wood blocking Inside walls thT neded to be functional not pretty the older Delts worked fine for those purposes and were less likely to get Stolen on the Commercial jobs we worked on in Washington D.C.

    What brand of saw would you suggest for baseboards? I am a beginner just starting out in the woodworking world and not wanting to spend a crazy amount on a miter saw.

    • @ShopRamblings
      @ShopRamblings  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would suggest a 10" Sliding Miter Saw. You can get one for around $200. I think it is the sweet spot. You can get a non Sliding for around $100 but a 10" Sliding will cut a wider board than a 12" non Sliding. A 10" is cheaper than a 12". I had a Dewalt 12" non Sliding, I sold it to but the Chicago Electric 10" sliding. The Dewalt was a better made saw but i was able to do much more with the sliding saw. If you are ready to buy this month Directtoolsoutlet.com normally will go 25% off everything the week of Thanksgiving and 30% for black Friday. Most all of the major brands will do. If you are on a budget watch for a sale.
      Once you can justify it, get a quality blade. I like Freud negative angle blades.

    Yikes...I just ordered this saw yesterday from HF for a laminate flooring job in my home. I have a 10" Dewalt miter saw which I had intended to use for all my cross-cuts...What I didn't think through before ordering my flooring, was it's width...It has already arrived and embarrassingly, I ordered 8" wide planks...Needless to say, my Dewalt can only handle up to 6 1/2" ...Hence the ordering of this saw....I wish I had caught this video before hand, as I wouldn't have purchased it. I do all of my in-home carpentry as well my barns and such..I recently did a big dual sliding door closet with a hutch in the middle along with drawers and had to rely on my neighbors chop saw for the drawer fronts ect...they were 12" in and of themselves, so I really wanted a decent sliding miter saw for ages and I could have afforded a better one...My question to you is, can I get consistent straight cross cuts from this saw or am I alway going to have to depend on checking each cut for square with an independent tool. As you can imagine, the slightest gap from being off square is going to show like hell with flooring....Or am I better off just trying to cancel my order as it hasn't shipped yet.
    Thank you in advance.
    Gary

      I used this saw for years. You should only have to cut the ends that should be covered by the base board. This is a great saw for the price, but with all the advances in power tools, you could get a better saw for not a lot more. Harbor Freight will take it back if you don't like it.

    • @garysmith3492

      Well, I have to make cut's for sure as they're 4' lengths over a 10' wide room with extended closets and I wanted to stagger the cuts for better appeareance. Of all the reviews, which I'll be honest, I didn't watch many before hand, Yours seems to be the most honest or perhaps professional and you've raised a lot of issues about it's percision...I'll be honest, I wish I hadn't ordered it...@@ShopRamblings

      @ShopRamblings  ปีที่แล้ว

      They are a great saw for the price. They are good for construction. I built tons of stuff with mine for 5 years.They are not a high precision machine, but some are better than others. How many thousands is it out?

    • @guayabito6946
      @guayabito6946 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShopRamblings I do not know the exact measurement of inaccuracy but last weekend, for example, I cut some 2x4s for some legs for two workbenches I am building and it was IMPOSIBLE for the cut to be 90 degrees no matter what I do. Also when I cut anything it does not cut all the way through, it always leaves a little piece of uncut wood, very annoying!

    • @ShopRamblings
      @ShopRamblings  ปีที่แล้ว

      @guayabito6946 that is not right. It should cut all the way through. Any miter saw has to have the fence set. It sounds like your is off. It should be in the instructions of how to set it up. They just put them together at the factory. Once you get it home, you have to zero it. I recommend the 5 cut method.

    • @guayabito6946
      @guayabito6946 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShopRamblings I have already tried adjusting the fence and everything that can be adjusted. It still leaves a little piece of uncut wood of about 2 or 3 mm.

    • @ShopRamblings
      @ShopRamblings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not there and dont know what you have checked. First, I would make sure the depth stop on the right is up. Then check the slide rails. See what the saw is hitting to make sure there is nothing blocking it from coming all the way back. If it is still not cutting all the way, I would remove the wings. Then loosen the 4 adjustment bolts and move the fence all the way forward, then square it.
      The good thing with HF is that you can swap it with another one if that doesn't work.
