    An easy hint/upgrade for you. Xmas lights, when I cut each light socket from the wire, barely time use & the sockets are cbm(copper bearing material) pays about $0.06 lb
    So a big deal there from Xmas to 50% or so.
    I also took a load of wire in just last week & the scrap yard classified my wire @ 50-55% & 30-35%. This was a very new price point here. I've never seen it before. This was for the light cords & lower was for communication wire types(computer cords, cell charger wires, RCA & so on. I'm to the point I don't care to clip the ends off anymore because of the time vs profit margin on these.
    Well here's a breakdown of the prices here in my area:
    Shred(tin)$145 ton
    Heavy steel/iron $180-$185 ton
    Copper:
    #2 copper $2.70
    Insulated #3 30-35% $0.40
    Insulated #2 50-55% $1.10
    Cast Al $0.40
    Old sheet Al $0.35
    Yellow Brass $1.75 lb
    Al=Aluminum
    I do try to cut all light cords though. But not the communication like I said.
    Also there's a few things that may help you out with weight for you.
    Mark your tubs with the weight of them on the sides. If they can clearly see it & they trust you they'll just slap the weight in the computer.
    Don't screw them with a very light weight or they will be sure to make it harder on you.
    Also if you go to the same yard frequently I'd suggest taking a cooler with fresh water or cheap drinks to pass out. They don't receive anything from other folks & are sure to remember you on a positive note.
    I also make sure to give my crane operator a drink whether he helps me out or not. They are cooped up in that thing for hours & are really appreciative!
    May you have a great turkey day if in US or Canada!

    Note: The first wire was not a dehumidifier, just a power chord. I Don’t strip dehumidifier chords, just put in 40% appliance wire pile, but that chord shown was worth stripping off outer coating as it was very thin.

    I just took in my first wire load yesterday. Looks like I could have upgraded it 🫣
    Here in New Zealand we have domestic wire with plugs then 30/45/60 & 80%.
    I removed all the plugs to get paid as 30%. If I had removed the outer coating it probably would have been 45% which would have paid me an extra $35NZD.

    Hey Tin Man, I have a ton of AV cables lurking in my basement. You think those are worth cutting the red/yellow/white ends off or leaving them as is?

    • @TinManScrapper
      @TinManScrapper  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      YES. I would put those ends in a coated brass bin. My yard in London gives dirty brass about $0.19 lb for those and other coated brass prong ends.

  • @carpentryfirst3048
    @carpentryfirst3048 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This may be kinda a silly question but, when you clip the brass wire connector ends off wires, do you just leave that tiny little bit of wire sheathing that the brass connected wraps around at the end of the wire? (Hope i described that well enough) I say wire connectors, I think they are really called lugs. When I cut them off the wire I get a tiny bit of the wire sheathing which stands out because of the colour of the wire sheathing. That doesn't make brass "dirty brass" does it?
    Such a tiny tiny piece of plastic but ... I don't know 😂. Only been to scrap yard once and handed in a few hundred pounds of clean brass. The guy didn't even look at it and just dumped it into the bin. Made me feel like I spent way to much time making sure it was 100% clean. ...any thoughts?

    • @carpentryfirst3048
      @carpentryfirst3048 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You have a perfect example at 19:00 in the video.
      So I'm not talking about that plastic cover that covers the brass connector, I'm talking about the tiny bit of wire sheath/cover that the bottom of the connector arms/prongs hold onto. You gotta open the little arms of the connector up to be able to get that tiny piece of left over sheath out of there.
      I've been getting it because I am saving to melt rather than sell but still curious how the yards look at something so small.

    • @TinManScrapper
      @TinManScrapper  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yeah, I leave it on. I have started to pull the little piece of brass off if I can and throw into the brass, but I don’t go out of my way to do it. I don’t get downgraded with the little brass on if I throw it in appliance wire

    • @carpentryfirst3048
      @carpentryfirst3048 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TinManScrapper you misunderstood my question I think. After I cut the brass prongs off, there is a tiny bit of the sheathing on them still because usually it covers the sheathing a tiny tiny bit.
      Since I got you here as well. I like 500lbs of steel ice collected the past year. Random stuff from scrapping but it's like 98% clean.
      Would you send it all to shred or separate the clean stuff? Millions of screws and nails and tiny stuff :s

    On a list my scrapyard gave me it says they accept 20, 40, and 75 percent. Is 75 percent much different from 60?

    • @TinManScrapper
      @TinManScrapper  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It all depends on the yard. In my opinion it matters more on who is working the scale. I used to get 40% and 60% wire from regular appliance wire, now they consider 60% as Rome’s wire (household wire). All appliance chords are now 40% and getting $1.67lb so not complaining about that price

  • @DavidJones-ib3zy
    @DavidJones-ib3zy ปีที่แล้ว

    Is 40% APW & 60% APW the same in Canada & the US ? If I recall Lamp chords were 40 % here in N GA USA last time I checked . Thanks

    • @TinManScrapper
      @TinManScrapper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it depends not only on country but also scrapyard to scrapyard. The yard I go to in Sarnia does not have both categories, just 40%, so I go to London because they have both categories.

    • @Donna-vs2iq
      @Donna-vs2iq ปีที่แล้ว +1

      all recycle yards in Ottawa are 1.00/lb for all insulated copper wire with no plugs. I never know what to do with the wire from appliances that are aluminum so I throw it into scrap.

    Have you ever thought about using pyrolysis and turning that plastic back into oil ? Wouldn't it be better to recycle the plastic into something usable instead of it going to landfills ? Then, you would have cleaned off copper as well. I've been melting my scrap copper, then pouring into art molds, hoping to come up with a decent product I can sell for more than scrapping.
    Just a thought ....

    • @jamesfirth1280
      @jamesfirth1280 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the idea, but unfortunately some scrapyards will not take melted copper as they question the purity.

      I see lots of people selling home made copper goods for $1.90 an oz. If someone wanted to scrap full time, you would need to get far more value imo .... than you would get from just scrap value.
