- Hello scrappers and planet lovers. In this video I will show you all the great copper that is found inside a magnetron from microwaves. I will show you how to safely and effectively take apart a magnetron and separate the copper from the rest of the magnetron.

A pretty thorough tear down, I prefer the single cut and peel method as Kevin demonstrates, Berryilium not used since the 1980’s but nothing wrong with using caution. Good Vid Tin man
Thanks for this video it taught me alot, I was wondering if that was copper in the middle of the magnetron cause it was looking like copper scratching it but magnet stuck to it, I love learning new things on scrapping
I put the Magnetron in vice hacksawed the Berylium taped thingies with a hacksaw. The copper piece- I pried with a scrap screwdriver and didn't need the grinder. Nice piece of copper. Don't tell anyone- I put the Berylium in the Recycle bin. Thanx Tin Man!
Be careful around beryllium one exposure to beryllium dust can cause incurable lung cancer. Though I've read that beryllium is no longer used in microwaves instead they use aluminum oxide.
be careful when opening them because they contain a small amount of thorium mixed with tungsten in their filament

Every single semi recent microwave transformer I've stripped has had aluminium wire. Newer ones don't even have a transformer, but still have a smaller copper wire coil worth getting. A lot of fiddly work for hardly any weight of aluminium there. You can get more copper off the boards in an old plasma tv, and for comparatively no effort with no grinder discs. As it is with the amount of whitegoods I get to strip, and the volume of copper from their wiring looms and motor windings, magnetrons are maximum time for minimum metal value. In contrast, just the solenoid from a slant six starter motor had me dumbfounded how they fit so much copper wire in there! Do a video on that.
Pretty interesting never new about that copper core in there I was taking out the wire and the magnets nice little tidbbit I actually have some out back to try this on let's see if this pans out to more then the magnets and aluminum
You're doing good work demonstrating your projects. I notice you take a magnet to various metals. It would be good to say when testing with with the magnet whether the magnet is attracted to the metal. It may sound crazy or unnecessary but for folks like me, without a mentor or someone to bounce ideas or lessons learned, I'm not certain which types of metals are attracted by the metal. Congrats for stressing PPE over and over. It'll finally get through the stubborn heads of your viewers.
yes i cant get it straight which metals take to magnet and which dont. comes natural to my hubby.

I have managed to cut the cooper from the magnetron using a pipe cutter.
The more I look into scrap the more I'm finding very useful, think its time I start taking a walk and collecting some, might even find some really good stuff

Absolutely Great video. I just took apart my 1st microwave safely, including the magnetron thanks to your video. I did break one of the magnets in half and it repels each other when trying to put it back together matching the ends. I know when you break a mahnet it becomes 2 diff magnets but if I reverse the 2 pieces it does stick together. If I do it that way and JB Weld them together will it be the same as the original? Is there anything you can use the aluminum fins for as a heat sink ot something? Again, great video, Thanks, Mike
Great detailed how-to for the scrap recovery tear-down. If I could recommend though, please wear those gloves the Whole time. I cringed the whole time you were scraping that dust off with your hand. Metal particles can embed under your skin for a long time.

The old microwaves contain the beriluim .the new ones do not contain beriluim.i still where a mask 😷 because scrap is not worth your health. Great info and video nightscrapper uk 👍

Yes the vast majority of new ones use alumina oxide in the ceramic. Still better safe than sorry.

I usually tape the ceramic rings before any hacking. I broke chips of it simply trying to pry the gun off the metal case.
One thing about casual scrapping, is it’s kinda enjoyable taking stuff apart, seeing how things are made… it’s too bad the market wasn’t better for functional components instead of simply their melt value. Safety concerns can be subtle when tinkering or deconstructing, prudent process is a good habit. RRR

Hey Tin Man this is Oz- I followed your instructions and hit the Rod on the Armature with a Sledge. It was kind of awkward- it didnt go all the wat thru. I placed it in the vice horizontal and used a hacksaw to cut the Copper wire then pulled it through. Now I know what it looks like stripped- it makes it easy. Thanx. A question- do you feel that a battery powered cut off saw( grinder) is powerful for cutting soft metals - Copper, Brass and Aluminum? One thing I like about them is they dont get as Hot as one is replacing the battery or waiting for both to reach ful charge.
I've been bringing those cores in as dangerous waste, which my area collects for free twice a year. I have a few now that I'll take apart. But, I won't be throwing in the ends in with shred. I'll will treat them as dangerous waste.
Good for you, I think it depends on area, but as long as you separate and tell the guys at the yard, they probably have a bin for this type of stuff anyway. Stay well.

but i figured out how to do the big ones. i just bought a heat gun. so heat up the copper and the metal around it, cut the copper at both ends, and just pull it out. WEAR GLOVES OR WAIT TILL ITS COOLED DOWN, LIKE LUKE WARM..
I need to do a better job about micro scrapping where it is worth it. Microwave are one of the ones I need to be better about. Great Video.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, the grinding discs have gone up a little in price but I do buy in bulk when they are on sale. I buy Maximum metal cutting discs. I get them at Canadian Tire and usually go on sale for a 50 pack for around $19.99 a pack

Any tips about what I can scrap from water heaters and TVs
I have videos on both. Water heaters have good brass and crt have good copper holes.

Not sure what type that is. All are round and are copper. If you sent me a picture, I may be able to find some. I do have a large pile that I have not taken apart yet and would be will I get to sell perhaps.
I usually enjoy crushing the berilum and slamming a line or two before I take them into the scrap yard
What can you make with the magnets? A science project , kids toy , I have collected I bunch thinking I would come up with a useful re-purpose. So far fishing magnet and gate latch tool holder.
I also bring to my school and give to my coworkers to use to hold up chart papers

It is crazy the difference in price, this is Cdn. Prices but I think it is so good because in London there are 4 scrapyards right near each other and that makes it a little more competitive. Either way, I would be stockpiling for now…copper is going to go way up in future I think.

Hello Jose, those magnetrons come from microwaves and they are a great bit of copper to sell as #1 copper. I would definitely check to see if the microwaves work first and if so, sell them whole.
But how much do you net on one microwave oven? How much time do you put in?
honestly they take me about 5 minutes. if the transformer is copper than I can get about 3.25 lbs #2 copper at $4.30 a pound and about 25 lbs of tin at $0.10 a lb. If transformer aluminum then 7 cents a lb. for the transformer, about 8 oz. copper and the rest tin

Ferrous metal is $100 a ton 2000 pounds in the USA now. It is not worth you time to scrap these days after your gas and time to separate the metals you make about 20 cents a hour, and that is if the buyer doesn't rip you off by under weighting your scrape as you can not see what the weights are because only they can see the scale readout. This should be illegal. A scale readout should be visible to the saler also.
Some good points. It is disappointing when you go to the scrapyard and you feel you have been u deprived or under weighted

Not sure. But we do pull out the food when it is done so may burn you if contents are really hot

@@granitestater1029 it's coated in maroon paint generally..it is a poisonous metal and getting any in your lungs can be fatal . There's no point messing around with microwaves,apart from the transformer which can be repurposed I get 10-15 euros for each transformer but even then they're a slow seller
@granitestater1029 I didn't watch anything about taking apart a microwave before I did so alone. I totally smashed that beryllium/ aluminum oxide ceramic apart, thinking it would be fine. Nothing happened to me, but in 30 years time I might get an incurable disease which wreaks havoc on my lungs. I add aluminum oxide as a possibility because newer microwaves are supposedly built with that instead due to it being safer. After emailing Bosch about more details that I couldn't find in any user or repair manuals, they responded by sending me promotional emails lol.
So far things are fine, but I may have cut 30 years off my life and I might die in agony. Have fun and watch the tutorials before you scrap!
@@thegreenray4010 I broke down my first microwave and pulled the magnetron just a few hours ago and I said to myself "I'm gonna set this part aside until I know what it is/does/is made from" and I'm quite glad that I did so. And also glad of this well timed YewTewb suggestion.

micrograms of beryllium will fuck you up. if you don't have a means of identifying microscopic quantities, (that's a joke, noone diy does), dont fuck around and you wont have to find out. the most toxic metal on earth!
I've taken hundreds of microwaves apart and I had no idea the core to the to the magnetron was copper. I usually just take the magnets out and throw the rest away. I feel like such a fool lol

@@TinManScrapper you show it at the end there the silvery rings in the center after you take off the ceramic. Through it in some nitric acid and drop it out of solution with HCL and if it drops a white substance out you have silver

Why didn't you weigh up the shred, aluminum and brass? This would've have been a much better value assessment in addition to the copper.

You should wear ear plugs, there are hair like tenicles in your ears will get pushed over and don't come back up over time more & more get pushed over until you lose most if not all your hearing, down the road

After all that work you get what, $3 for you work. That must be at least $0.50 an hour. That's worth risking you life over! Instead of this, buy $100 worth of pennies and pull the pre-1982 pennies out and melt them down. It's a much better use of your time.
is there gold in the magnetron?
No, copper as the inner core and the ring that is golden color is brass. The fins are aluminum and the 2 magnets are ferrite

Ok. I've been a scrapper forever and I've never heard of berylium. I've broken those ceramics many times and have never had an issue. I never heard of this metal until today. From what I read I should have been dead years ago. Makes one wonder about the perceived versus real danger. I'll be careful from now on but I suspect the threat of poisoning is real low. the tape seems to be a good idea.

I hate leaving negative comments on your video but please don't be dumb and try to take these apart and for the love of God dont put a magnetron in a vice. All it takes is one slip and that insulator will break and your DEAD. You can make a few bucks in much easier and safer ways.

I've torn apart a lot of free fridges for their high quality insulation. But if you look at what my gas costs to pick them up, it really was not worth the trouble vs just buying new insulation, and in fact, the pink cotton candy stuff you can get free anyway. I also collected a lot of microwaves for the transformers to make high powered Electric car chargers/inverters, and once again the gas used to pick them up was too much. Today at $5 gallon there no way its worth it. If you can pick them up like 5 at a time... the metal scrap yard has all kinds of them and they just crush them. I never asked if I could buy them for $1 or something
Way too much work dragging a microwave home to break it down for how much money? $9 ? $12? Then drive it to the scrap yard with all the other crap.
I guess it depends on the scrapper. I also like them to hold my smaller pieces of tin
I keep forwarding video to not waste of much of time as I somehow guessing what you want to say. firstly considering the risk even 1 in a 1000 as the other side is getting cancer it's not wise for that much copper doing it. second, even if there be no risk still you are trying the wrong way! you do not need any kind of cutting or grinding, even if that iron ring be your excuses. I've opened and separate that ceramic in less than a minutes. bro just use a normal pipe cutter for copper pipe. about 2 to 3 millimeter above that nasty ceramic you can put the blade of pipe cutter and those who already used copper pipe cutter and know the mechanism understand what I'm talking about. in fact the blade that turn around the copper cut it by increasing pressure at the precision of less than a 1mm. that iron ring also a kind of spot welded, in some models bent on some spot by pressure and it's only for the magnet to stick on those location. you can easy separate after you got ride of the ceramic part. I say this video is not educational and only giving wrong instruction to people who maybe not expert and risking their life. you may ask if it's risk and not wise why I did!? I need it for science and research and not for scrap metal and considering the safety I triple checked there was no risk.
and regards the toxic definition ;) While brief contact with beryllium metal or alloys is unlikely to cause immediate harm, prolonged contact or repeated exposure can lead to skin irritation and sensitization. Some individuals may develop an allergic reaction known as beryllium sensitization, which can manifest as a chronic lung disease called chronic beryllium disease (CBD) when beryllium dust or fumes are inhaled. to be clear if you scrap microwave on a regular bases means like a bird who taking corn from a farmer on regular bases. imagine what's happen of one day the farmer see you? or let say that peace is round and even turn by a simple shake on the table. what if somehow drop and break? or someone in work place who has not enough knowledge cause problem?

I just happened to have a microwave ready to go to the metal recycling. So I opened it back up and pulled the magnetron.
I think you should take a better look at the inside of that element. That sparkly white material inside the copper slug looks like beryllium.
As soon as I saw that I sealed it back up. It’s not just the porcelain but what is INSIDE that hunk of copper.
A measly two ounces of copper is not worth risking your health for.
I really think you should investigate further and rescind advocating people tear these things open, making all sorts of metal dust.
This is simply too dangerous.
I scratched it and it is copper. the berylium is just on the 2 ceramic strips.
It is a shorting ring and copper.
Copper is about $4.45/pound (less for scrappers). Two ounces of copper is $0.55 (less for scrappers).
There is absolutely no reason to risk toxic exposure for such a minuscule amount of money. Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish.
Encouraging people to mess around with this stuff is bad advice. I wonder what the legal ramifications of that bad advice are?

Risk your life for not even 10 dollars
We risk our lives everyday day with things like wifi, etc. everything runs a potential risk. I am taking extreme safety measures (tape just an extra measure) and not all cores contain beryllium anymore.

When you put them together they are very powerful, I have been pinched before and it does hurt.
When you have a lot of magnets together they can be pretty dangerous if you’re careless.
