      Billy Beheler focus is crap. Not as crapy as the fiesta. Focus had a horrible dct transmission. Next time rent a fusion there still bland. But slightly better if not old like alot of ford cars.

    So much wrong with this video. Most cars with sport mode start off in normal for one main reason: engine temperature. Cars are not meant to be revved and raced when cold. Some manufactures (Subaru) wont even let you go into sport mode until the engine is warmed up. Also, she asked why there is a normal mode? Seriously? It saves on gas and drives much smoother. You don't always want to be racing.

    Wow that interior looks so dated. I also feel this car needs around 365hp instead. I almost smell a flop coming here. I feel they just phoned this one in since they dumped all of their ST cars. Time to go back to the drawing board Ford.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Acc0rd79 can it even be a flop? R&D is so minimal and being a parts bin car I feel like even if it’s not groundbreaking in any way it’ll still be a huge profit maker for Ford.

      Rice ETR it’d be a bummer even with 550 horsepower. It doesn’t drive sporty enough and the interior is stuck a decade in the past. Looks like a great “road trip car” for the family though.

      Nick Buccini it’s called grade shifting because while your going down hill with a load or with out, the transmission will automatically start down shifting to slow you down and control your speed. Instead of letting you free wheel down the road.

    I needed a family hauler, I needed to fit a large dog, 2 kids, a wife, & all their gear, it needed to be 'domestic', it needed to be AWD due to inclimate weather where I live, and I wanted some sport built in with a decent amount of power. Guess what I ordered! Yep! An ST. For the amount of tech built in, I couldn't beat the price out the door. Are there faster alternatives? ABSOLUTELY! For what I needed for MY family, this worked out to be the best. It's NOT for everyone, I get that! The Edge ST IS for me right now. I agree, the interior needs a bit of WOW added to it, but it's not the worst interior out there. As with other reviews out there, there was ZERO data to go with HER thoughts on the vehicle. DATA tells a lot IMO. This was a Ford event so they have rules about what can be shared. I look forward to some actual data to go with the thoughts. IMO, TFL did a better job reviewing because they got the Engineer to discuss what was changed from the Sport to this and the standard Edge to the ST.

      I think the main point that she had was that you're looking in the upper tier of 35-40 grand for a midsize SUV. For my money I would consider getting a full size truck regardless of make. Even a 2018 Ford F-150 XL with 4wd starts in the neighborhood of 35K with a supercrew cab. So with that, I feel that the ST is just going to be Fords apology to all the recent grad's and the newly promoted because gone are the days of going out and getting a cheap small car, now you have to get a truck/suv that's on average 3-15,000 more than a small car that you actually needed.

  • @radicalcrash
    @radicalcrash 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wouldn't want it in sport mode all the time because the gas mileage is better without it. I wouldn't buy it for constant sportiness, I'd buy it for the extra power of the 2.7L to be there when I want it. But most of the time, I'd just drive it like normal. And for that, I'd still want decent gas mileage.

  • @jdesigns7239
    @jdesigns7239 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Wow! Great job #Edmunds! The Edge ST doesn't have the Ford/GM 10-speed bc it's engine is transversely mounted! Meaning it is a front wheel drive base AWD system. The 10-speed was designed for longitudinally mounted engines. And yes, I understand that the 10-speed bolts to the 2.7l in the F-150 but thats bc the engine is longitudinal in the truck. Please don't give car advise to people if you don't know what your talking about.

    The reviewer basically answered the main topic question , is the Edge ST, a real ST?
    I had a Fiesta ST; the HANDLING and thrill you would experience from that car was like no other, especially for the price! The ST badge really meant something special for the Fiesta and Focus. It covered the performance dynamics of balanced handling and power; Traits in which we don’t see in the Edge.
    This Edge ST is just a rebadged Edge Sport...
    With that being said, I would probably still consider purchasing this vehicle, but I know it is not a true ST.

      @br33zy771 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      they dropped the sport name and this car isn't just a sport, it's got a few things upgraded including more horsepower. It's a good idea for ford to get rid of the sport badge and replace it with this. It's very much an ST.
      The handling of the fiesta hands down is amazing but consider how small that car is.

      StevenSVT Edge ST has 20 extra horsepower bringing it up to 335. Also sportier tuned suspension, better brakes and other performance enhancements. I’m waiting to see the enhancements they make for the 2020 Ford Explorer ST.

    This reviewer does not have enough of a working knowledge of how cars work to be reviewing them. Most could care less how something is edited, but as someone who has sold cars, I would say that a reviewer's number one job is educating without partiality. This reviewer doesn't have the knowledge that this vehicle has a transverse FWD setup like most modern cars, and thus uses a transaxle. This is different than a longitudinal RWD setup as in the F-150 and most other pickups. 8 speeds are pretty impressive for a transaxle as they typically can't be more than a foot long. The reason a vehicle downshifts on grades is purposeful to reduce brake wear while reducing speed of descent, and not even remotely unique to the Edge. Now does someone have to know how large the typical transaxle is? No, however they should have enough experience to give factual coverage of what they are reviewing and not just holistically feeling out it's aura in their own subjective opinion. This is the fault of the supervising editor for not reviewing the video before publishing.
    I don't want this to be some giant negative storm, so I'll offer up some suggestions as best as I can without being an automotive journalist myself. First of all, drive more vehicles! A huge component of reviewing any product is comparative analysis. If you haven't experienced many different cars from different companies and from different eras, it will be difficult to have a contextual baseline. Also, ask anyone in the know more questions when you have the opportunity. They may know more than they were primed by the marketing department to go over in the presentation. This is especially true of lower level (direct to the) product engineers, as they are the nitty gritty guys and gals. Engineer leads tend to have less involvement in the problem solving, and are more supervisory and broad overview in their role. It's journalism: Seek experience, know how to find the best information, know how to communicate that information to John Q. Public. I'm no highly experienced reviewer, but to sell the modern vehicle, you have to be in the same position a lot of the time. Some folks are just steamrolling balls of charisma. Not much to do about that aspect, but our own due diligence.

I know some salesman who have been selling cars for over 15 years who can barely tell you the difference between a wheel and a tire. You can be exposed to a related industry and not have to retain practical knowledge to get by, because it isn't necessarily required. When the job is literally communicating your knowledge of the topic, it's a little more difficult. There aren't too many successful mechanics that don't know what a torque wrench is. There seem to be a lot of tire techs that don't, though.

If all Ford intended was to offer a sporty appearance package for the Edge, then why not badge this as an "ST-Line," as Ford does in Europe?

    Haven't driven the Edge ST but my wife and I seriously considered the 2018 Edge Sport earlier this year. Not too much different except a significant price bump, a slightly hotter engine, and an eight speed transmission (that may or may not be an improvement.) Oh, yeah, the ST badge(s) Lots of them. I liked it. My wife, who doesn't suffer from testosterone poisoning as I do, not so much.
    Apart from the straight line performance of the V6 turbo (my thing, not hers), we both liked the size of the Edge. It's significantly shorter than most midsize crossovers making it easier to handle in suburban jungle traffic and shopping mall parking lots, a primary mission among this class of crossovers. The interior was OK but nothing to write home about. My wife complained about the steep rake of the windshield that made her feel like she was steering from the stern of an outboard. Likewise, she found the overall visibility to be compromised, especially on the front edges of the Edge. It was a small thing but for me the tiny tach seemingly added as an afterthought to the left edge of the dash was especially annoying in a "performance" vehicle.
    The biggest fail for us, though, was the absence of third row seating. We're a small family (my spouse, a teenage daughter, and a big dog) so we don't need a third row about 90% of the time. But when we chauffeur my daughter and three or four of her friends, it's a godsend. And when we go out with another another couple or small family it's really convenient to take a single vehicle. Even when it's just my daughter and a girlfriend it's nice to put them as far away from the front row as possible. (For them as well as us.)
    So what to do? We wanted a smaller midsize crossover with a usable third row. Fortunately, we found a more or less perfect compromise. The Kia Sorento SX-L is exactly the same length as the Edge. It has a third row of seats that, while snug, is adequate for a couple of teenagers or average size adults for local trips. Its overall cargo capacity behind the first and second rows is virtually identical to the Edge. Overall passenger room is likewise virtually identical in the first two rows. Better interior, better gadgets, and a far better bumper-to-bumper and poertrain warranty at a price several thousand dollars below the MSRP of the Edge. It's my wife's daily driver so my whining about the superior performance of the Edge's V6 Turbo didn't turn the tide and ultimately I had to agree the Sorento was a better choice for us.
    Whether we would have made the same decision for the 2019 models, I can't say. But Ford has bumped the MSRP of the ST about $5000 compared to a fully loaded 2018 Sport. And from what I've seen, the claims about the improvements that merit the ST badge strike me as more marketing hype than substantive arguments. For $50,000 I just don't see the value compared to some of the competition, especially the Kia Sorento.
    P.S. Good review. Ignore the haters.

      This thing looks identical to the 18’ Edge sport in everything but the new transmission. My local ford dealer was marking down some leftover 16’ model year Edge Sports for $26k brand new about a year ago. I was almost convinced to buy one but ended up not taking the chance.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Corrreau: The Ascent hadn't been released when we were shopping earlier this year and it appears from early reviews to be a good vehicle, especially for Subar-ites. But I don't think it would have changed our minds compared to the Sorento. First, although the Ascent makes more efficient use of its interior space than the CX-9, it's still about seven inches longer than the Sorento (and the Edge). As I noted above, we don't need a third row of seats most of the time and the Sorento combines a usable third row with a more compact size than other midsize crossovers. Second, the only engine available is Subaru's 2.5L turbo 4 and I prefer a V6 for vehicles like this. Third, although I'm not a fanatic about it, I just don't like CVT transmissions and that's the only option for the Ascent. I wouldn't fault anyone, especially Subaru fans, who purchases an Ascent and I've already seen a few on the road in the last couple of months, but it just wasn't for us.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tyler Beeson: When we were shopping earlier this year before the Edge ST was available Ford dealers were offering significant discounts were offering significant discounts on 2018 Edge Sport (though not as much as you report for leftover 2016 models a year ago). Now, according to AutoTrader there are no 2018 Edge Sports available within any distance of my location. (That's not necessarily reliable, of course.) But there are a number of 2018 "Titanium" models available for around $35K. I wouldn't be surprised to see the 2019 Edge ST discounted to at least $45K if examples sit on lots (as I suspect they will) for a couple of months.

    • @66cotter
      @66cotter 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephenhendricks103 I agree about the V6 and the transmission, not a CVT fan as most people aren't as well. I do have a Santa Fe sport with the 2.0L turbo, it's plenty peppy but I preferred the V6 I had in my last vehicle. Sorry I hadn't understood you had already purchased the Sorento. My neighbour has one and loves it.

      Real dumb questions for someone who should be an automotive enthusiast.
      Why did Ford use the 8 speed, when they have an excellent 10 speed? Because the Ford / GM 10 speed is RWD based and the 8 / 9 speed is FWD based. Guess which the Edge is?
      Why don't they not have a sport mode and always keep the Edge in sport mode? Because the EPA numbers would suck and you only drive it that way 5% of the time anyway.

  • @Neoblitzkrieg666

    Ford needs to keep the Focus ST if they want to stay in the performance small-car game. I don't know why they're going to stop selling them. I see Fusions and Focuses EVERYWHERE around where I live. Not to mention that this this when well equipped nearly hits $50k. A well equipped Focus ST brand new doesn't hit 30, and you can get them for nearly 20 new if you push for a better deal! I've got a '14 Fiesta ST, and my next car will not be a Ford. This move no "no cars" is going to make me move into an Audi S3 or a Subaru WRX as choice for my next car.

      They conceded that market to the Japanese, Koreans and Germans. After 40+ years I guess they finally feel they can't beat the Japanese for quality smaller cars, the Koreans for bargain small cars and Germans for premium small cars. So if your in the market say 2020, you'll be looking at Subaru WRX, Civic Si, Accent N or Golf GTI.

    I'm mixed about putting unique badges like this on vehicles like this. I have a '17 Focus ST which is a blast to drive. The ST spec was designed specifically for this vehicle along with the Fiesta, and that's makes them unique. However, Ford believes that somehow they can capture what made the ST vehicles unique and reproduce it in the Edge, which is a totally different vehicle with its own set of dynamics. I don't completely understand it because it can't possibly be anything like the cars.
    Normally, I would complain about what I call Badge Thinning, which is spreading a unique performance package to multiple vehicles. But Ford will no longer manufacturer cars (Mustang withheld) for the States, so the ST badge on the Edge will be the only vehicle in Ford's lineup with that distinction. I would argue that the more vehicles that have a unique performance upgrade built in, the less significant those vehicles will be.
    A good example is Dodge. When the Challenger SRT Hellcat first came out, it was really different. Really special. Then Dodge decided to put that package in the Charger. And the Grand Cherokee. Suddenly, the Challenger version wasn't so special anymore. Then there's the Hellcat Redeye. And the insane Demon. Your original Hellcat had now become a commodity, just like your neighbor's Camry. You could probably make a case for the SRT badge too. You can get that in nearly every Dodge.
    "Hey, check out my new Charger SRT! Isn't it bitchin?" Yep, just like the thousands of other Dodge SRT vehicles I see driving everyday. Yay. 😴
    Like the quote from the movie The Incredibles: "When everyone is super, no one will be."

Besides my first car was a manual transmission so I'm used to placing my right hand on the shift lever, even with automatics.

    The comments about the Sport mode? Why have it? Sport mode holds in gears longer for both accelerating and decelerating for a better response and feel. The reason you can turn it off is for fuel economy. Remember that the government has standards, and Ford wants the best ratings possible. I can't believe that comment, or some others. S is for select shift and it shifts to lower gear when going down hill so you don't have ride the brakes all the way down, like you'd do in a manual doing the same thing to keep from just accelerating as you coast down. Also, the reason for all of those climate controls is probably because the passenger can control their own AC/heat.

To me she should have reviwed it as an SUV with a little kick when you need it. Again as a 14 edge sport owner that has 305 HP I can imagine this has alot more kick to it with over 25 more HP.

    One thing that people are not realizing and it could be the age of the people watching this is the 335 /380ft-lbs is just stock from Ford. Anyone that is into Ford's and performance knows at least 10 companies that will tune it for 93 octane and those numbers will go to up or over 365 hp and well over 400 ft-lbs torque and that much power in this will be crazy fun and you have room to take the kids and dog on trips... yea the interior needs help but once I am standing on the go pedal I won't care that much about the interior...LOL Our local dealer is claiming if you don't get the big wheels/brake package it will sell for 43K which means if they don't sell will drop to 40k or 39K.. so now that is not bad for all this... yes you can get another brand with more power, better interior but not for this price. I want this for my daily driver instead of my 2014 2.0 escape, and when I need more of a thrill I have other toys in the garage that will scare me...LOL

      Oh and controversial cause lexus you know
      But i think the rx350 is the single hand best looking SUV on the road from any and all manufacturers. Once i got used to the grill on them (used to love it on the sedans hated it on the SUV'S). The lines and shapes are simply outstanding
      And i fucking hate lexi's

    It’s a nice looking SUV from the outside always loved the way the Edge looked the inside well I like the simplistic dash it’s not too cluttered same with the radio, etc. Ford should of put the new 10 speed in the Edge she’s right about that as far as the sport mode goes I guess I’m old I don’t see the point of it. You buy a performance SUV/car the ride should be on the firm side always. 28K isn’t a bad deal bit for the money I’d would buy a Subaru XT used of course seeing they don’t make that model anymore. The Mazda CX-5 would be high on my list as well, Mazda makes all their car, etc fun to drive.
    Lay off the comments on her she does a good job on these reviews. And she’s cute!

      richard button It’s much better than the first generation Ford Edge from 2007 - 2014. The 1st generation had atrocious interior quality with even cheaper harder plastics. This is a big step up from then. Hopefully the 2021 redesign of the Ford Edge will be like the new Ford Explorer and Escape with better interior quality materials. The Ford Fusion is even worse.

    Only rear-wheel-drive vehicles get the ten-speed transmission.

  • @aussie2uGA
    @aussie2uGA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Says it has an "updated transmission". If you know anything about Ford Focus and Fiesta, the Powershift tranmissions all failed, multiple times, became extremely unsafe to drive, and in Australia, you had to sign a non-disclosure statement when you accepted their settlement to you. Nobody was allowed to discus just how pervasive or extensive the failures of that transmission were. At least in the US, owners can talk about how unsafe it made these cars.

      Blake Swan Europe still gets new ST models like the Fiesta ST and Focus ST. Automotive journalists say they’re fun to drive excellent little hot hatches too. It’s a shame Americans are so crossover hypnotized that we can’t even get regular new Fiesta and Focus models now. I wanted to buy a 2019 Ford Focus last year. I guess I’ll need to look at a Volkswagen Jetta or Golf next.

    I've driven many new Edges many times, really not a fan. It's probably not too bad to drive once it's got a little bit of power, but you get sick of trying to see past the gigantic A pillars real fast. Plus, the steering is terrible, the turning radius is terrible. Performance is okay with the 3.5 V6 but it's far too heavy for the 2.0L EcoBoost which is what most of them have. It's not tediously slow compared to most cars, but it absolutely is compared to most of the other vehicles that Ford are currently making. The 2.0L is great in the Escape, MKC, and Focus ST, but it's just too small for the Edge.

    • @devinbender8428
      @devinbender8428 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      MaxTheKanuck the 2.0l ecoboost has more power and torque than most SUVs in this segment!
      The closest is the Jeep Cherokee 3.2v6
      Yea it has 10 more hp but the edge has 30 more torque!!!
      Yea the edge feels slow because it’s a soccer mom crossover. But it’s still faster than the competition. Let alone with the 2.7!
      They killed off the 3.5 because the 2.0 is just that much better!

    • @Sheehy223
      @Sheehy223 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@devinbender8428 They didn't kill off the 3.5. It's much better suited to a heavy SUV than the 2.0L.

      MaxTheKanuck *they killed it in the edge 2018 is the last year. The flex is dead next year and the last year for the explorer is next year before it goes rwd.
      The 3.5 is dead to ford. It’s old and weak.

    "...It feels like it would push back." She doesn't push the vehicle, but makes judgement about what what it "might" handle like when pushed? Too bad. The Edge runs circles around an Audi or BMW X5, that's a fact not a reach.

    Americans should stop complaining about this new Edge ST. We don’t even get it in Europe (emissions, blah blah blah). We only get the ST-line Edge, which has a 2.0 liter diesel with 238hp. But we do get the all-new Fiesta ST which you should look at some reviews, and get jealous.
