Hey brother, excellent fishing, you found some really nice browns and some beautiful big brookies! Without giving away the exact spot can you give me some pointers on how you found this spot? Specifically, I'm searching for brookies in dane and iowa county, ive found a few but this stream seemed to have a good population of larger brooks. If you want to chat at all or exchange tactics / some spots let me know.

For those you you who don't know what he meant, he wet his hands before touching the fish. ALWAYS do that for trout you intent to release as they have a layer of slime that protects them from bacteria and it is easily removed when it touches anything dry (dry hands... land... dry net, etc). BUT I would say he held that 14 incher out of the water a bit longer than I would. I try to keep it to 10 seconds max. Anything more starts to impact mortality rates, especially if the water is warm or the air is cold (cold air freezes trout lungs so keep them in the water whenever possible when fishing in winter months).

i tried fishing a small stream like that in waukesha county. but the stream ground was very very muddy and I kept getting stuck and had to get out. do you ever have that happen?

Rob Hummel I definitely have had that happen and it is a pain when you keep getting stuck or you don’t know when you next step might be your last. I prefer fishing streams with sandy or gravelly bottoms. I haven’t fished in Waukesha County, and I’ve only fished a fraction of the creeks in Dane, Iowa, and Grant Counties, but I would guess there would be more streams with sandy/gravelly bottoms in the driftless region. Easements make even the muddy bottomed creeks fishable, but nothing beats wading in my opinion.

My go-to is a Mepps Aglia (like this: www.amazon.com/Mepps-B1S-Treble-8-Ounce-Silver/dp/B0000AUWQX/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=mepps%2Baglia&qid=1659111083&sprefix=mepps%2Bag%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-5&th=1&psc=1). Think I usually go for a 1/8 or 1/4 oz, but others go bigger.

It could be that the creeks in Dane County are more heavily fished since they are closer to Madison. I have one or two spots in Dane County that somehow always are loaded, but otherwise, I think the further west and north you go, the better luck you’ll have.

Get out the trout regulations...look in the map section....find a stream...and try it. Put in your own work.
