Dude, The Foggy Dew.... If we had to replace Amhrán na bhFiann I'd choose The Foggy Dew without question. Sinead O'Connor's version just solidifies it as the quintessential Irish song in my humble opinion.

In America "Dear Old Donegal" is the quintessential immigrant tune. It's not specifically about Irish history. It's about being successful in America, but being homesick for Ireland & dreaming of going back home to Ireland to share their success w/ loved ones. My grandfather loved this song. I would listen to it w/ him, but the entire time I didn't realize what it was about & that he must have been homesick himself. Broke my heart when I finally realized what the song was about, but by then he was gone.
I think my list goes something like this: 1. Rising of the moon and variations. 2. Garryowen. 3. And any song made by the Wolfe Tones or Irish Brigade.

I'm not opposing it in Irish, just odd that we dont teach both parts. I moved to Canada where they make a big thing about it being bilingual but we dont try it or just let it be used in either language. Strange stuff.
