Buzzfeed didn’t fucking claim to create them u infant, they’re pastries made in similar method to croissants but with chocolate inside them so obviously westerners are going to call them by the name of the original pastry and the flavour added.

They probably didn't rise because you threw the salt and yeast together. The salt kills the yeast. I learned that when I had to bake bread at school and I did that wrong. It was disgusting
Considering that they did rise slightly it's more likely that the salt just slowed the growth rate of yeast down, and then putting it in the fridge right after making it probably didn't help. In order to actually kill the yeast, he would have had to add way more salt.
Consider sourdough bread (among many other types of bread). You add the salt in with the bread many many hours before baking, and it takes a while to rise, and that's a GOOD thing. It helps with flavor development and absolutely does not kill the yeast. Your bread would have came out fine if you gave it time to rise.

On The Great British baking Show Paul Hollywood says to always put the salt on one side of the flour and the yeast on the other side (i.e., left and right side of the mixing bowl) so they don't mix.

Yay!!! Great video, David. And just a tip, pain au chocolat is pronounced "pahn oh shock-o-laht" with a soft (almost silent) t at the end. It means chocolate bread, and it's how most people who speak french refer to these, because they're not technically traditional croissants (because of their shape).

Joshua Jin it depends on where you are! Calling them pains au chocolat is common in most of France, and I think chocolatine is more common in the south of France and in Canada.

Where I live we call these "Pain Au Chocolat" too, but I sometimes do refer to them as "croissant", also was very fun watching David butcher it XD
