im starting school again soon, but i stay up till 3-5am and wake up at like 2pm if i dont have an alarm set for 11:30. i have like less than 2 weeks now till school starts, and this sleep schedule is ruining my mental health too. i just like have to be thinking about something or i have to scroll on youtube before i feel like i can sleep comfortably. i wish i never stayed up late and ruined my sleep schedule 😍
As someone who does all nighters it usually doesn't work and there's another way but it's much slower like a week or so youre going to gradually sleep earlier or later every time so say you sleep at 6am then the next day sleep at 5 and then the day after that 4 and so on
Ever since being home all day everyday I’ve been going to bed at 1am and waking up at 10 or 11am. I have literally been trying for 3 months to get it back to 10pm - 6am but I can’t 😭
I sleep around 10 AM-12PM and wake up around 4 PM. Every time I am successful in staying awake the whole day(24 hours or more), by doing something all day usually with a friend, I’ll sleep when I get home and wake up in the middle of the night. Then I’ll usually take a nap and wake up at 7 PM :(
Exactly me but I think what to do is to avoid taking naps before 3pm and also keep trying to sleep at the same time even if it means moving your phone or something away from you to not distract you
Oh I’m so happy 2 weeks till I go back to school and I don’t really read ,but I’m getting to try it before bed I’m also going to write a journal thanks Dr.Michel
Thanks so much for the explaining, Dr.Breus! I've perhaps tried hundreds of times, self-defeated or helplessly disappointed, at TURNING THAT DAMN BRAIN OFF or Wake up earlier. Your video equips me with such a cognitive weapon (and relief, as well) that im willing to try it again!
As I recall learning we have different lengths of our circadian rhythm, not all are 24 hrs. Mine is more like 27 hrs, so I’m just about never tired in the evenings. It worked well for being on call at the hospitals as a doctor, but I’m day to day life…I tend to be a night owl, wide awake and then super groggy in AM. I’ve missed many 8.30 AM work outs or been very late, almost always late, even to work. As soon as I don’t have to wake up early I just don’t wake up. But I feel best when I’m up and out early in AM getting my exercise. I need at least 6 hours to feel decent. 7 when I was younger, then 6.45 hrs, now probably 6.5 is the sweet spot. I am very sensitive to light and watch my iPad on sleep made the hour before sleep. I have drifted off to sleep while watching. And I agree with him that a distracting watch of something does keep the mind from wandering and minimizes my worrisome thoughts. 😅 And after a good nights sleep all the worries seem so far away! Right?
Thank you, I'm gonna try this counting from 300 backwards in 3s thing today! I tried simple counting but I guess it was too easy so my brain started thinking about something else in parallel...
@Kulasa I didn't really stick to it, my mind always wanders :) I now use bedtime affirmations and sleep meditations to fall asleep fast and peacefully.
This was interesting. And it's nice to see someone admitting to getting 6,5 hours of sleep though the recommendation is 7+. Also really nice to get some references for both go-to-bed and wake-up time. I see many people talk about waking up early without mentioning how equally early they have to go to bed. I tend to go to bed at 23:00 / 11 PM and wake up at about 6-6:30 AM too, though I'm aiming more at 22:00 / 10 PM. I just have some bad bed procrastination habits to deal with. I'm using a wearable fitness device that lets me track my sleep. It's not perfect in measurements, I'm sure, but still interesting. It seems most night's I "loose" around 45 minutes of sleep to falling asleep, waking up multiple times during the night (only short periods though, luckely) and waking up in the morning. So ideally, to reach 7+ hours of actual sleep, I have to aim for 8 hours in bed. I often find it hard to figure out whether sleep recommends are for actual sleep or just hours-in-bed. But then, I also know I'm obsessing more than nessesary about that number. It's just guidelines after all. Even if my autistic brain would line to aim for specific numbers. Another reason it was nice to see some example numbers from this video. Thanks for sharing it. Edits: typos
To all the people who can't fall asleep before like 5-7 AM and wake up i the afternoon, I've had the same problem for years and this week I'm going to do an experiment to see if I can change this pattern within a week. I'm going to try a bunch of different techniques and will report back if anything works. My goal is to be in bed and asleep by midnight and wake up around 6:30-7:00.
ive been sleeping too late and i currently have my vacation going on, but school opens in about a week and I'm just miserably wasting these holidays by sleeping and waking up late. my messed up sleep schedule absolutely demotivates me to do anything useful so i just spend all day on youtube :( i feel so bad for not making use of my actual potential to do stuff... i have it all, all i need to do is get off the bed and do something useful for myself, but i can't bring myself to do it.
If you want control of your bedtime, apart from getting knowledge about it and creating a plan and such, I would include to understand and ask questions about what motivates you to stay awake in the hours preceding. Then, figure out other things one can be motivated to do that aren't as stimulating For example, an alternative to watching TH-cam videos is record oneself talking about an issue or creating a plan. I find that recording myself makes it so much easier to have the thought about going to bed, then focus on it and gain motivation to carry that idea out. With watching a video, one is distracted so that the idea doesn't even come to mind, or it comes to mind briefly but not enough to realize that one wants to take action on it.
damn it really is comforting in a weird way to see people who are experiencing this as well. like, as in talking about their personal experiences and being able to relate. you always just hear from doctors and article mes that yeah, a buncha people are the same, but actually seeing it and seeing they feel and think the same as i do...
I turned nocturnal, and I was actually testing how long I’d sleep every time I went to bed. I passed out at like 9 am and wake up at 4 pm. Man I tried figuring out how to sleep but the weighted blanket idea helped me since I always want to keep moving.
it's summer and i ruined my sleep schedule, no one is on to play with me. so i just go to bed, but i have my phone with me. this is always already 3-5AM. so i put my phone away and try to rest my eyes. once i finally have some sign of sleeping, it's always morning. i just can't go to sleep well... i tried using this video, it doesn't work. that's why i'm on a 3-day no sleep streak.
I get about 9hrs of sleep a night but I have a really hard time waking up and feel tired for the rest of the day. Is there anything I can do to wake up easier and feel more rested? I had a sleep study done and tested just the slightest sleep apnea. I dont think the apnea is the root issue here but would welcome your thoughts. Thank you
Ikr. Try checking sleep hygiene, meditation, if you are eating food that causes blood sugar peaks, if you are addressing anxiety, depression and/or burn out symptoms and if you are exercising enough.
I’m currently switching from night shift (for over 5 years) back to day shift at work….I’m literally getting up (7am) when I use to be going to sleep. It’s miserable…no matter how exhausted I get, I keep waking up every hour or so through the night. Here’s to hoping I can get adjusted in the next few weeks. I remember it took me a few weeks to get used to sleeping during the day.
what about fixing a very very broken sleep schedule? I am currently falling asleep at 8-10 AM usually and wake up at 7 PM. would it be better if I just sleep less so I sleep early, or just flip over by trying to stay awake as much as possible so I wake up later and later
I fixed my routine by not sleeping the whole night not sleeping the whole day sleeping at the next night and waking up early morning and feeling sleepy when its time for bed:)
Virtual school got my sleep schedule messed up my sleep schedule even more. I go to bed at 4 AM wake up a 6 AM. Falling asleep till around 3 PM then waking up again around 10 PM or 12 AM. It's currently 4 AM right now as i'm typing this comment right now.

In most cases, pulling an all-nighter to reset your sleep schedule doesn't work. I've tried it several times and to no avail.

im starting school again soon, but i stay up till 3-5am and wake up at like 2pm if i dont have an alarm set for 11:30. i have like less than 2 weeks now till school starts, and this sleep schedule is ruining my mental health too. i just like have to be thinking about something or i have to scroll on youtube before i feel like i can sleep comfortably. i wish i never stayed up late and ruined my sleep schedule 😍
Me watching this while pulling an all nighter to fix my sleep schedule 👁👄👁
As someone who does all nighters it usually doesn't work and there's another way but it's much slower like a week or so youre going to gradually sleep earlier or later every time so say you sleep at 6am then the next day sleep at 5 and then the day after that 4 and so on
I love him he is so human and makes things feel possible
This is quite embarrassing but I go to bed at 7-8am and wake up at 7pm my brother says I'm nocturnal-
You don’t have school?
Everyone is here because of quarantine, am I right?
Ever since being home all day everyday I’ve been going to bed at 1am and waking up at 10 or 11am. I have literally been trying for 3 months to get it back to 10pm - 6am but I can’t 😭
Man this video really helped! I was watching this video and when I woke up it was day time already.
currently 1:53 am and I feel like building free energy
Currently 4:00am in the morning.
What’s happened to me 👁💧👄💧👁
MY SLEEP SCHEDULE IS FCKED!!! I REALLY NEED TO FIX IT!!! Thanks for this video, I’m so sick of being tired😅
POV you got school on Monday and haven’t sleep in like 2 day
Ahhhhhhhh it's soooo dificultt
I don't have to worry about this ever because im home schooled.......
but I still do
Same but I have to do my school work at 8am and I don't usually sleep until 12am. My sleep schedule is horrible rn
I sleep around 10 AM-12PM and wake up around 4 PM. Every time I am successful in staying awake the whole day(24 hours or more), by doing something all day usually with a friend, I’ll sleep when I get home and wake up in the middle of the night. Then I’ll usually take a nap and wake up at 7 PM :(
Exactly me but I think what to do is to avoid taking naps before 3pm and also keep trying to sleep at the same time even if it means moving your phone or something away from you to not distract you
currently watching this joint at 3 am
It’s 6:51 am and I go back to school on Wednesday I need this 😭✋🏽
It’s 2:10am and I have school today wish me luck🤨
Oh I’m so happy 2 weeks till I go back to school and I don’t really read ,but I’m getting to try it before bed I’m also going to write a journal thanks Dr.Michel
Thanks so much for the explaining, Dr.Breus! I've perhaps tried hundreds of times, self-defeated or helplessly disappointed, at TURNING THAT DAMN BRAIN OFF or Wake up earlier. Your video equips me with such a cognitive weapon (and relief, as well) that im willing to try it again!
I love this comment section it’s so relatable
surely im not the only one watching this at 4:40am
Literallyy
Right?
The screens are to addictive 😂
6:43 This hit the nail for me, thank you!
What I do when I mess mine up is I get tired around 7am so I keep occupied until around 6pm then go sleep then it eventually goes go your liking.
Sometimes it's a pain but I survivr
😩🙏😭I hope and pray I can get my sleep cycle back on track. I just want to be normal!! 😩😭🙏💖
So how's your sleep schedule now ?
Thank you, I'm gonna try this counting from 300 backwards in 3s thing today! I tried simple counting but I guess it was too easy so my brain started thinking about something else in parallel...
@Kulasa I didn't really stick to it, my mind always wanders :) I now use bedtime affirmations and sleep meditations to fall asleep fast and peacefully.
my freaking holiday is ending after 2 days. THATS WHY IM HERE!!

To all the people who can't fall asleep before like 5-7 AM and wake up i the afternoon, I've had the same problem for years and this week I'm going to do an experiment to see if I can change this pattern within a week. I'm going to try a bunch of different techniques and will report back if anything works. My goal is to be in bed and asleep by midnight and wake up around 6:30-7:00.
did anything work?
Plzzz prayyý for mee....my sleep pattern is totally ruined....
Edit: finally now my sleep is better...
ive been sleeping too late and i currently have my vacation going on, but school opens in about a week and I'm just miserably wasting these holidays by sleeping and waking up late. my messed up sleep schedule absolutely demotivates me to do anything useful so i just spend all day on youtube :( i feel so bad for not making use of my actual potential to do stuff... i have it all, all i need to do is get off the bed and do something useful for myself, but i can't bring myself to do it.
Goshh same
As I am watching this, it is currently 4:25 A.M. :(
This was such a great video! I love your “sleep well dream big” sign 😌
Yeah I literally have Covid and my sleep schedule is already so bad- like I literally went to bed at 7:00 am and woke up at 4:15 pm
8am rn and I cant sleep
Syrf same
9 am rn-
dude 9:30am - 5am and i wake up dead tired.
7:35am😔
My little kid got a great schedule and I’m so proud of my tay
If you want control of your bedtime, apart from getting knowledge about it and creating a plan and such, I would include to understand and ask questions about what motivates you to stay awake in the hours preceding. Then, figure out other things one can be motivated to do that aren't as stimulating
For example, an alternative to watching TH-cam videos is record oneself talking about an issue or creating a plan.
I keep waking up at 10pm-12am and going to bed at 8am-10am
Edit: Just woke up from a dream where I got stabbed in a NYC train by a guy roasting a baby
😧 no wonder you don’t sleep
This made me laugh at 4in the morning
same i keep falling asleep at 2 pm
that opening line alone made me crack up, you just earned a like bro 😂
me watching this at 5am
I turned nocturnal, and I was actually testing how long I’d sleep every time I went to bed.
I passed out at like 9 am and wake up at 4 pm.
Man I tried figuring out how to sleep but the weighted blanket idea helped me since I always want to keep moving.

Me: Takes my socks off and puts feet out from the cover
The monster under the bed: My time has come
that's what I thought about 😭😭
How am I supposed to sleep if I feel something is watching me?
it's summer and i ruined my sleep schedule, no one is on to play with me.
so i just go to bed, but i have my phone with me. this is always already 3-5AM. so i put my phone away and try to rest my eyes. once i finally have some sign of sleeping, it's always morning.
i just can't go to sleep well... i tried using this video, it doesn't work. that's why i'm on a 3-day no sleep streak.
I woke up at 10 pm today
I woke up at 5pm
11
After reading the comments i feel so much better I'm not the only one who's having a bad sleeping schedule
We're all here cuz quarantine fucked up our sleep schedules 😌✨
yes bro
the pandemic messed up my sleep schedule so much
I get about 9hrs of sleep a night but I have a really hard time waking up and feel tired for the rest of the day. Is there anything I can do to wake up easier and feel more rested? I had a sleep study done and tested just the slightest sleep apnea. I dont think the apnea is the root issue here but would welcome your thoughts. Thank you
Ken Ngo you’re elite. I should get a sleep study done.
Ikr. Try checking sleep hygiene, meditation, if you are eating food that causes blood sugar peaks, if you are addressing anxiety, depression and/or burn out symptoms and if you are exercising enough.

needlemover brayannn hahahahaha
I’m currently switching from night shift (for over 5 years) back to day shift at work….I’m literally getting up (7am) when I use to be going to sleep. It’s miserable…no matter how exhausted I get, I keep waking up every hour or so through the night. Here’s to hoping I can get adjusted in the next few weeks. I remember it took me a few weeks to get used to sleeping during the day.
3 hour sleep hell yeah
0 minute sleep hell yeah
Thankyou sir, 300-3 worked for me.
What’s the answer to the last question? What should one do when waking up in the middle of the night after 3 hours or so?
I just skip sleep for a day and then go to bed at 10pm the next day, half dead
I then wake up refreshed at 8am
So we’re all looking up “how to fix my sleep schedule “ up huh lol I hate waking up so late !
This was such an informative video!! Thanks!
what about fixing a very very broken sleep schedule? I am currently falling asleep at 8-10 AM usually and wake up at 7 PM. would it be better if I just sleep less so I sleep early, or just flip over by trying to stay awake as much as possible so I wake up later and later
This video was very helpful thankyou dr
5:47 but like, the monsters might grab my feet from under the bed
im going back to highschool and my sleep schedule is crap i dont wanna already feel terrible when i go
I fixed my routine by not sleeping the whole night not sleeping the whole day sleeping at the next night and waking up early morning and feeling sleepy when its time for bed:)
This is genius!
I did this 2 days ago and the exhaustion caught up on the second afternoon ._. And now I'm up and sleepy at 7am because I was awake all night
Watching this at 4:04 in the morning. Nice
